SUCH A DISAPPOINTMENT!! Take a look at my previous review and you'll understand why I'm so mad about my recent experience here. I used to love this place. Even when I lived out of state, I would come home and head to Merengue for delicious Dominican food. I'm not sure what has happened over the past couple of years, but Merengue went from delicious to garbage. It's awful. The food and the service are lacking. Merengue used to be a hidden gem where the dining experience was comforting. No more. They have gone down the toilet and don't care about it. They should be embarrassed by the food that is coming out of the kitchen. The meats were beyond dry. They lacked flavor. The yucca was like chewing on cardboard. The barely mashed the mofongo. The steak and onions came with almost raw onions. How lazy is their chef that they couldn't properly grill onions??!! Wow!!! They ran out of cheese. No fried cheese. They ran out of the beef in the bisteca platter. The excuse was that they only get deliveries on Monday so by the weekend some dishes are unavailable. That's what I call POOR PLANNING. If you can't manage inventory, then you can't manage a business. Horrible. Shall we talk about the LAZY INATTENTIVE STAFF??! I'm appalled by how careless they were during my visit. So many mistakes and they were so blasé about it. They really did not care. It must be nice to go to work, be awful at what you do, and still have job. Sorry to say that one of my favorite casual dining spots in Boston has become a dump. Bad food. Awful service. Decent prices. Street parking. Private function hall. Accepts credit cards. Merengue takes reservations, and they save a specific table for you with one of those little "Reserved" signs, so it is pretty official. The restaurant is actually pretty good sized with two dining areas set next to each other, and another function room in the back that you pass on the way to the restroom. To start with, we ordered the small Picadera Merengue (Sampler Platter with Combination of Fried Meat, Green Plantains and Cassava) $12 and opted for the Con Queso Frito (With Fried Cheese) option for an additional $2.00. The portion was huge for two. Even for three. The two of us ate less than half of the variety of foods, although we noticed two men at a neighboring table completely demolishing theirs. The fried chicken was meaty crisp. I couldn't really tell the beef apart from the pork - probably the lighting didn't help. The green plantains were okay, but I mostly enjoyed the crisp crusted cassava that masqueraded as breaded mozzarella sticks, and the chewy wrinkly chunks of fried cheese. Since we were planning on sharing the meal family style, I asked the waitress for her recommendations for a seafood item and a meat item, and I went with them. We ordered the Combinación de Mariscos al Gusto** (Seafood Combination with Lobster, Shrimps, Calamari, Octopus & Mussels) $19 with Spanish rice as its side, and the Pechuga de Pollo Rellena de Camarones en Salsa Criolla (Chicken Breast Filled with Shrimps in Creole Sauce) $16 with steamed vegetables, for a bit of something healthy. I wasn't impressed with the chicken dish. The portion was rather small and the protein rather dry. The veggies were acceptable, however, and I discovered an entire lobster tail in the seafood entree, but the impressiveness of that fact was lost once I realized how rubbery it was. The shrimp was also overcooked, but I really liked the coconut sauce that we had opted for over the Creole sauce, and enjoyed it scooped over the Spanish rice. We finished our night with an order of the Tres Leches $3.50, which was a sweet, moist treat. The servers played a bit of tag team here, so tables were quickly cleared, but the soda and later the bill took a while, so our main waitress thanked us for our patience several times through the night. She informed us at one point that they filter their water here (I liked that!) and that they don't have iced tea even though it is printed on the menu. Live music plays in the inner room beginning at 8pm on Saturdays for 2 hours. It gets pretty loud, so it gets tough to have a decent conversation. 3.5 stars read more

Food: 4 items- Appetizer Ceviche Shrimp- Shrimp was overboiled.....very leathery to chew through. The 6 shrimps were so hard that pieces of them were stuck in my teeth. Main Course Whole Red Snapper Cooked in Creole/Coconut sauce, served with white or yellow rice, and beans. FREAKING DELICIOUS. YES. The salty sauce smelled and tasted so good...it just wafted around the table. Main Course Mofongo served with small bowl of Chicken Broth and bits of lettuce and two pieces of tomato. Quite delicious. A bit too dry. This is apparently a common Dominican Repub dish, I may have been eating it wrongly at first, because it was a lot better after I dipped it in the Chicken Broth. Dessert Flan. Topped with a generous helping of whipped cream and sweet strawberry, it's sweet and good texture. But now I kinda want to try their smoothies instead. Service: Excellent, all the servers were sincerely friendly and quick. Decor: Super cute, they have a colorful lantern-material coconut tree sitting on top of their bar, alongside a motorcycle....and other cutesy things. Locals may not want you to visit this spot because we would prefer to keep the gems to ourself however In fairness to the business and their desire to stay in business this restaurant receives five stars for its consistent delicious and exceptional experiences. The food is perfectly authentic and delicious without exception service is quick and attentive and competent from filling your water glass to making suggestions they make you feel welcome and want to stay. Ordering from the menu has no exceptions everything has been delicious and well within the qualifications of the cooks. If you want Latin food or Caribbean food done perfectly this restaurant won't disappoint. I recommend going for the entire experience cocktails appetizers entrees and perhaps a bebida or dessert. You may leave feeling heavier but never disappointed. Average check for a party of two has consistently been around $60-70 read more

Okay I came to this place hungover. The place is loud bright and wild but I was able to process it well. There are so many food options and the servers are so nice. We got a plantain stuffed dish, rice and fried pork and I was cured of my hangover. It was sooo good, so flavorful so filling. The pricing was great too, we shared everything and paid about $40 total. Also the drinks are amazing. So strong, the perfect sweetness. I understand it's COVID, but come on! Food was mediocre at best, they must have different cooks; didn't have my original item, and hurt substituted for something I don't eat. Then had an attitude, because I said I didn't want it. Not even an attempt to call, and ask. The portions have gotten smaller, and they no longer give salads with their dinners. The lemonade is still good, but my smoothie wasn't as great as before; but it wasn't nasty. However, I won't be back. read more

I am all about the authentic, ethnic food experience (see my list), so making the long trip down to Merengue wasn't a problem if it meant experiencing the best Dominican cuisine around. Here's what I loved about the place: - gorgeous, warm, friendly, vibrant decor that transports you to somewhere tropical and makes you forget the sketchy neighborhood you just passed through to get here - super-friendly waitress who patiently answered our millions of qs - ridonkulously huge portions of so much food our spacious table for 6 literally could not hold any more plates before our sides had finished arriving - amazing prices for the ridonkulously huge portions of food Here's what didn't thrill me: The food itself really wasn't that amazing. Our group got the Picadera Merengue (sampler platter with fried meats, green plantains and yucca fries) and Queso Frito (fried cheese) to start our meal. The fried cheese was tasty (how can you go wrong with fried cheese?) but the various meats were over-grilled to the point of being dry and stiff. The plantains were nicely done but the yuvva fries could have been moister (having backpacked through Peru, I know this is possible without sauce). For entrees, I got the Almejas (mussels), opting for Creole sauce for an authentic dish. The mussels were pretty fresh but the sauce was about 1 degree too salty. Good a first, then you realize you're chugging water like a sorority girl just to make it through the next bite. On the flip side, the Spanish rice with beans that came as my side was completely dry and tasteless. (I did combine the two when I took the rest of the dish home for leftovers and voila, problem solved!) Other dishes I tried included the Filete de Chillo al Gusto (red snapper filet) in both coconut and Creole sauce, and both were very well done (meat nice and tender). The Chuletas de Cerdo Frita (center cut fried pork chops) were too dry and tough. The chicken mofongo came in a huge pyramid of ridiculous quantity but it was a bit too dry and tasteless for me. So overall, while I enjoyed trying out a cuisine I don't often get to have, the food itself didn't seem very well-cooked. Perhaps it is a Dominican thing to have drier meats, but I like my meat as tender as possible. Glad I came, not in a rush to come back. Tonight must have been the 4th time I've been here and it seems things get worse each time. My review will only base on today. I noticed the price has gone up, but yet, the portion size has either stayed the same or a bit smaller. Each entry comes with a side salad which is pretty cool. For certain other entrees you can pick either tostones or rice and beans, etc (located on SIDES) and it's pretty to follow menu. I ordered the Paella. My two friends ordered the Churrasco 8oz. Steak and the last friend ordered the grilled Shrimp with rice and beans. I would say that the Paella was pretty good. The rice was cooked right, not too dry nor too saucy. The only complaint i have on it is that the seafood were overcooked. The lobster tail which was a very TINY piece, was completely dry and chewy, as were the shrimp. The muscles, on the other hand were fine. Both my friends ordered the steak MED WELL, which means there shouldn't be any red in it and definitely hardly any pink. Instead, one of them was pretty PINK/borderline RED on some parts. She was unable to eat most of it so we did a little bit of swapping of food. Her order of Tostones were dry and cold, like a rock. you can hit that on the plate. lol. The server was nice enough to grab a new order for us. she even offered Dessert for the time we had to wait for the food to come out. The service was barely ok. The place wasn't too busy but for some reason the food was just taking forever to come out. I was very disappointed that they didn't at least bring out some of the side orders first. For example, they could have brought the salads out first before the main entrees are done. We just sat there and chatted and it was slightly annoying because we were all hungry. We had a groupon to use which wasn't much but the server felt the need to point out the Bill BEFORE the groupon and AFTER the groupon. This place is ridiculous with the services. We waited 10 mins for someone to come serve us. No one came, so I requested to speak to the manager. She was NOT apologetic and said she did not notice us. There was ONLY four people in the dinning area. She treated us like we were nothing, and we strongly felt it was because of our darker skin tone. This is NOT the first time I have heard of this place being prejudice towards darker skinned people. I was extremely hungry, coming from MY COLLEGE final. We get our food, and the "manager" decides to come clean right next to our table and even put her back side very close to our food, as the tables are not spacious. Roxbury's reputation has its way of scaring foreigners like myself away from ever roaming through the neighborhood. It's taken a Groupon deal to Merengue to help me muster up the courage to venture in. We arrived for lunch on a snowy day and thought it was interesting to note that Merengue's owner also has a banquet and meeting room right next door, for large parties and events, I assume. Unmoved by the storefront, I was pleasantly surprised by the look and feel of the inside the restaurant. Bright blue walls and artwork adorned the restaurant, which made it feel warm and inviting. Merengue is pretty spacious and we were seated right away. The place wasn't too crowded and our waitress decently prompt. We decided to order: Red Snapper in Coconut Sauce with a salad ($14.95) and paid an additional $5 to substitute the side with Mofongo (Mashed plantains with pork or chicken, accompanied with chicken broth) Grilled Chef Special: 8oz grilled steak with chimichurri sauce which came with a salad and a choice of one side (I picked Spanish Rice) ($16). The salad came out first which is was pretty basic; for dressing they had balsamic as well as oil and vinegar at the table. The food took a little while to come out, and I noticed that other people seemed to be waiting a while, too. When we finally did get our food, everything smelled delicious. I'm no Dominican food connoisseur; I knew everything had good flavor, but the food was still not phenomenal. The mofongo tasted dry. The Spanish rice? Dry. And! If the red snapper hadn't been surrounded by its own (pretty damned good) coconut curry sauce, it would also taste very dry. The chicken broth that accompanied the mofongo was actually pretty stellar, and therefore, we used this as well as the coconut sauce to put on everything else. The steak was also Ok, and tasted better with the aid of the chimichurri and lime juice. I had higher hopes for Merengue, but in the end, because everything had the common theme of being dry, I felt let down. The decor of the restaurant is beautiful and the service was great! After reading all the previous reviews I was really excited to eat here but it was underwhelming. Overall the main issue was the food was drrry! :( My empanadas, sweet plantains and steak were all dry. Such a disappointment! The flavoring and spices were all there but I just wish it was juicier! The best part was the rice! It wasn't dry. The prices are also reasonable. I provided pics of everything. If your looking for absolutely delicious Spanish food I would suggest Orental De Cuba in Jamaica Plain..its a little bit pricer than Merengue but worth it. read more

Of coarse I had to be a fatty and ordered the salami y queso as well. Wow, I was amazed. For the price you're paying, this place gives you huge portions of food. But I recalled a month ago when I told myself I would try and eat more plantains, so this fit the bill. I chose pork as my filling. I thought it was pretty good. I'll probably try something different next time (like the BBQ Pork Chop). The reason I went here, Tres Leches Cake, was obviously saved for last. I saw this on Alton Brown's TV show during the week and decided I had to try it (not a baker). I went on Yelp and searched for this delectable treat, and Merengue came up. I didn't get it today but I love their gandules con coco. Tried this place for the first time a couple days ago. I'm definitely a fan of Latin cuisine and thought this was really good. I especially appreciated the presentation. I ordered the grilled pork-chops with chipotle sauce and the pork-chops were perfectly seasoned and tender. I accompanied this dish with a side of Spanish rice which was pretty good, although I would have preferred a bit of more spice to it. My critique is more for the ambiance of the restaurant. The music was inconsistent while I was there. Sometimes it was playing, while other times it was not. Also, the lighting was awkward. It has such a colorful feel in the restaurant, so you'd think there'd be some bright lights or something but the lights suggested more of an intimate vibe which didn't really fit the scheme of the restaurant. Came on a busy Sunday. Service was extremely slow, we gave her our cards and waited about 10-15 mins to get our credit card back. My friend ordered their steak and onions, but the meat was SO underwhelming from what she normally gets and expected. She gave it back, and ordered something else. We waited quite a bit for our food. I ordered grilled red snapper with creole sauce. The sauce was good but not flavorful and something that I was raving about. The fish on the other hand was really good and a good seafood option. The food is amazing and well seasoned, the staff is friendly and efficient, and the meals are such a bang for your buck. One less than $10 order could feed one person for at least 3 days. This is my second time coming to a Dominican restaurant and ordering a mofongo which is basically mashed plantations with meat shaped like a little mountain on your plate. It comes with some sauce on the side because it can be rather dry and they brought over some salad as well on the plate. I got the chicken mofongo and sadly it didn't have that much flavor as thought it would so I had to add some salt to it. My friend had the pork mofongo and that one was nicely seasoned!! I should've gone with the pork! In addition to my order I got the some marinated steak (sorry I can't remember the Spanish name for it) not that was soooo good and amazing! I then got their flan vanilla to go which honestly wasn't so great :/. but overall great service! And you have enough for leftovers! read more

This was worst experience I've ever had. I knew it was an hour and half wait time before placing the order- I was fine with that. After waiting that 90 minutes, receiving a bag that did not contain the full order was annoying but not the biggest deal. I call the restaurant directly, the girl who answers says that the menu is on grubhub wrong, SO THEY DECIDED WHAT SIDES I WANTED instead of using that hour and a half wait time to contact me, THE HUNGRY DINER! She says because of this mistake, she will have to charge me more because my rice was not supposed to be included. I ask for a manager and she proceeds to place me on hold for seven minutes before hanging up. So I call GrubHub and speak with Deborah who graciously deals with the restaurant for me...unfortunately the restaurant will not own up to their menu offerings and are dead set on charging me the trivial $3. I finally agree and the restaurant says they'll send it out "right away" once the driver gets back, as the rice is already made. You'd think it ends there right? WRONG. It's been over an hour since that call and I have yet to receive my upcharged rice. I call the restaurant back and the girl who answers says "I don't know what you want me to do, we're busy." I WANT YOU TO FIX IT! I tell her to give me an actual time of arrival and she finally agrees to call the driver to see where he is. She gives me a call back 15 minutes later to tell me that he's 20 minutes away. Recap: 5:30pm Food ordered on Grubhub (Stewed Fish, Rice & Plantains) 7:04pm: Partial order delivered (Fish, Burnt plantains & shredded lettuce in a box with a slice of tomato) 7:06pm: restaurant notified 7:18pm: Grubhub gets involved 7:36pm: $3 upcharge order placed for rice confirmed in 5:30pm's order 8:37pm: Driver is 20 minutes away, ETA 9:07pm Currently, it's 9;10pm and I'm so done I've gotten to the place where I'm not even hungry anymore. Saddest part is the restaurant is 2 miles away... If you actually want your food, STAY FAR AWAY FROM MERENGUE. UPDATE: my phone rings at 10:53pm and the driver says he's here. I just said "no thanks" and ended the call. So in the end you can get your food, just order at noon so you can eat it for dinner. o_O read more

Had a few delicious things here: Arroz con Camarones (Shrimp Rice), Tostones, Maduros, Bistec Merengue. Also the Queso y Salami Frito app was perfect. As a side, do yourself a favor and get the Rice and Beans. It's a staple and its prepared perfectly. A few things were not as good as I expected: Sangria (Margarita was better but still low on alcohol), Chicharrones (very tough, if you like hard meat they are for you), Yuca Frita (they look like mozzarella sticks, quite odd), Mofongo was weak too. The drinks we tried were not very alcoholic and excessively sweet so I would just stick to a beer (Corona) unless you just love sugary drinks. The last complaint I have is that the temperature on a Fri afternoon was surprisingly low in there. It was as though they didn't want to turn on the heat which is a real drag in Boston. So dissapointed with the food! My brother lives in Tucson and was craving our dominican food, and looking at the pictures on the wall, I'm wondering if they have changed chefs or cooks. No carne guisada (no "bandera dominicana"), even though i specifically said, please do not fry the pork, chuletas, and steak to a dry, burning point, that is exactly how they came (secas y achicharradas), the steak was cold too. The chuletas were returned. My fish was breaded and though, it tasted like it was old, it was bathe in a tomato sauce so red and strong that did not taste like salsa criolla at all... not a trace of recaito (cilantro). The mofongo, moro and maduros were good, the rice/red beans were meh. The place was empty when we got there, had they listened to our request (NO dry, burnt meats), maybe the experience would have been better. We all regreted eating there. read more

I have only eaten here once but it definitely won't be my last. Friends and I visited recently for dinner and the restaurant was busy but we did not feel rushed. We ordered appetizers that were fresh and large in portion size. I had the berejena asado with tostones and my friends had the meat sampler and pastilitos. For dinner I had camarones with aroz con habichuelas and maduros, which was white rice, a side of beans and shrimp in a red creole sauce. The portion size was large and the dish very flavorful. My friends had a salmon plate and a chicken plate and both gave good reviews for flavor. One suggestion was to include a sauce on the side for the fried chicken plate as the meat and rice were a tad bit dry. We did not have room for dessert! Update: This restaraunt practices bad business. Recently i wrote a review regarding this restaurant, Who had called me 5 mins prior to my soon to be bride walking out asking for the rest of the deposit, which I paid. My wife paid them a deposit 2-3 weeks prior to the event, which was 06/17/2017 as of 6/29/2017 Nibia the restaurant owner lied! and charged both of our cards on 06/29/2017, she harassed me for the rest of the deposit on my wedding date. Do NOT order catering services through this restaraunt. They did not even deliver what we paid for. We had a party of 320 for our wedding, we order two types of rice, two types of meat and 1 salad, she brought to us 1 tray of chicken, and the rest was all steak, we did not have a variety of food to service even a small percentage of our wedding group. The fact that she even came up with a contract and did not deliver, is grounds for reimbursement. I know she will try and default on reimbursement, but I want my money back for neglecting to bring what we PAID FOR! read more

The Mussels are amazing and HUGE! nothing shy of the best I have had the mussels over 5 times and they never skimp! The coconut curry sauce and creole sauce are my favorite. My father is a big fan of the steak dishes with the onions and peppers, they are very flavorful I just dont prefer thin cut steak but if that is your thing, cool. When the restaurant is completely empty and walk-in for a take out order and wait 30 minutes for some friend cheese, and eggs, you finally realize that the place is crap! Not sure why this place has anything other than 1 star. You have like about 10-12 people working there. I honestly don't know why this place is even open. Went there with my dad for lunch, since he wanted Spanish food and I didn't want to drive. Waited 45 minutes for a mofongo and pepper steak. My father someone who is super chilled and patient was beyond angry with the wait, we left before our food came. We didn't see our waitress for the duration of our time at the restaurant. Good ambiance. Bad service. Food was meh. I ordered something and got informed that there was something missing and they'll replace it with something else. This was a few minutes before serving. I wish they told me when I ordered. Really disappointed. Felt like I wasted money on something I don't want. They were not even apologetic. I would not recommend this place. read more
