My experience with Pennybyrn has spanned 24 years between being an employee and a family member of…read morea resident. From both sides, I can without a doubt share how amazing this community is. My Grandfather became their family and developed the best relationship with his caretakers. I never worried about the care he received, because it was always at the level where I would have cared for him. I expected the best, and he received it. When he passed, his entire household mourned along with me. They will still share an endearing or funny story from their time with him, and it really touches my heart to know their relationship was so strong. Pennybyrn has some of the lowest resident-to-caregiver ratios in retirement living, and this is designed to allow extra time to build relationships, give extra care, and support enjoyment of life and home. As an employee, I can share that this company will go to bat for its team and try to give the best of every penny and benefit possible. Pennybyrn is non-profit, meaning every dollar that comes in goes right back into resident care. When they give annual increases, free meals and amenities, and continue to keep benefit costs some of the lowest in the industry, they have strategically and thoughtfully given to their employees at great expense. Pennbyrn truly loves their team and will do whatever it takes to keep them happy! Please keep in mind that the other reviews listed here are subjective to each person's experience. Pennybyrn isn't perfect, but their mission and values are carried out in everything they do. You can come into the healthcare households right now and sing along to "My Girl" with a live band and dozens of residents singing and dancing along. There is a quality of life here that is unmatched, and the residents deserve to live each day with love, compassion, excellent care, and family. That's what Pennybyrn is all about and they deliver on their mission to "Demonstrate God's love to every life we touch".

She was happy with her physical therapy in the hall and stairs for several days but then was isolated to her room for therapy. She had to stay in her room with the door shut. She went in with back issues, came out with COVID and passed a week later. They knew. Horrible place.

We often felt like it was "us" against them vs working together. We constantly had to ask for our mom to be bathed, have her teeth brushed and no one ever clipped her nails even after we asked. She was overdosed by their admission. Sheets would be soiled and piled in the shower. No sheets replaced on the bed and family not called so we could bring more sheets. If we hadn't gone by she wouldn't even have had a blanket to cover up with. Clothes often missing. Communication was always lacking between both family and from one shift to the next. No one could ever answer a question directly it was always blame shifting. Often under staffed.

The staff is caring and on the ball. The food is good ( our loved one likes it and I have eaten it several times- quite delicious). They have a wonderful activities department and an on staff pastor who is great. The place is clean and takes good care of our loved one. All department staff are accessible and helpful. We are so thankful for this good place. ( Someone mentioned getting locked in the bathroom - I checked and the bathroom door in our family member's room does not lock. Concerning items getting gone- this happens in all nursing homes. A lot of the time it's residents moving them or losing them or throwing them away because they have dementia. There are some cases of residents " moving " things. I'm sure there might be malicious cases where someone steals, but for us this has not happened. When small things get mixed up or lost, you just understand it's a big place that's very busy and sometimes things happen. We have not found it to be a problem. Most of the things in our loved one's room are just fine. Clothing/laundry mix ups sometimes occur- but it's not a big deal in the grand scheme of things. Just my opinion being around nursing home situations for years - believe me- the good far outweighs the bad!).

The entireties of the staff - from the sales, to skilled nursing, to the dining room servers were welcoming, obliging, and happy (which is not always the case in senior facilities!) The residents we encountered were equally cheerful! My father decided on that 1st visit that "this was the place for him", and fortunately there was an apartment that would be available to him in a week's time. Unfortunately, as is often the case with elderly parents, we experienced a medical "emergency" with my Dad several days before his scheduled move-in. The amazing team at Abbotswood moved mountains to get him in-house, and under their expert Living Well @ Home skilled nursing care...an answer to our prayer as we could not give him the care he needed. The team at Abbotswood is enthusiastic, respectful, responsive and incredibly professional! The grounds are beautiful! The interiors are updated and bright! The restaurants serve wonderful food, and are accommodating for each resident's particular needs! I doubt you will find anything in the Triad that is even close to the gem that Abbotswood is!

Within a week of moving in I knew I had made the right decision. This is a community made up of people that are a large family. EVERYONE is very friendly. I felt welcome from the moment in moved in. We have active residents from 60 years old to 98 years young! The staff is exceptional. They are part of our large family. They always greet you with a smile and your name. "Good morning Mrs. B" It is amazing how much that can mean. And when I say staff I mean everyone -- the maintenance department, the housekeeping department, the cooks and wait staff, our activities coordinators, the nursing staff, the security staff and the administrative staff. You get the idea - everyone!! As a resident I can be as involved as I want to, or stay more in the background. When you move in you have a Mentor to help you get your bearings. On going we have a Care Chain that makes sure no one feels alone. Bottom line is this is a great place to live. If you are thinking about this kind of move - do yourself a favor and check out Whitestone before making any decisions.
