I just happened to be here during this internationally recognized festival. Although I didn't get a chance to see any performance and missed the Miss Aloha contest, I get to walk around and see many Hawaiian art & craft exhibition and displays from local artists. A lot of handmade jewelry, hats, and art pieces. The admission is free and everyone is welcome. There are some local musicians play soft Hawaiian music on the stage. Two of local mommy just took of their sandals and started the Hawaiian ocean wave dance off the stage. I had a lot success shopping. My purchases included a seashell necklace, pink shell earring, straw hats with flower, fresh plumeria flower ($1), a bag of taro chips, lilikoi passion fruit shortbread, and of course a lemon blast icy pop. It's so hot out here. So I change my Nike T-shirt to a Hawaiian flower shirt, wear my straw hot with the plumeria flower and a pink shell earring. Now I totally fell like a local when I walk out of the festival. What a fun day!

I was happy to get to try a couple of samples from some of the vendors and some educated me on a lot of different things that I didn't know about the island. There are multiple species that you don't ever see outside of Hawaii or often at least. Was happy to know that I'll never see an avocado of this size in Alaska, but it still made me sad because it did taste delicious.

It is definitely not ideal for strollers, so use a baby carrier instead, if you have it. The trail is relatively quick, and ends at at a breathtaking view of the water. Definitely one of my favorite moments so far in Hilo! If you continue up the jungle-like path, you will end up at the botanical gardens. So if you don't wish to walk there and then back after the gardens, you should take the same route back, to avoid the extra walking.

The lobby is open and welcoming with a cafe, exhibits, and advertisements for events and shows. The staff here were also welcoming, inviting us to come in and explore. We walked around the theater proper, enjoyed the art, and went to the basement. Even if you aren't coming for a show, I recommend visiting on a walk around town. There are also great restaurants, markets, and stores nearby.

Why 3 stars? Unfortunately the course is in ok shape except for the greens. I would say they are borderline unplayable. But, that still didn't stop me from making a few one putts!!!!!!! Really sad about the greens. In one of the holes is not even technically a green but mowed down fairway with a huge hole in the center. Look, this is a great place to practice and would make a great senior course. Just don't expect to putt or if you do, 2 putt max should be the rule. I still go and enjoy myself - you will too if you know what to expect. Great course for beginners!!!!!
