I'll try to avoid specific details so the men reading this don't get discouraged. I had my vasectomy done at the Merrimack Urology Associates with Dr. David Shi, who's new to this location. Starting with the receptionists; very cold both times I was there. No smiles and you'll be lucky to get a "good morning". The surgery itself was a disaster. Something that's supposed to take a few minutes took about an hour. It was very painful (when it's not supposed to be). When doing the right testicle the procedure went accordingly, but with the left side there were complications. I was rolling and cringing on bed the entire time with pain. Dr. Shi claimed the anesthesia didn't really work for the left side. He tried applying more anesthesia throughout the remaining of the procedure to no avail. The pain was very intense and constant. After what seemed to be an eternity, he finished stitching me up and told me to ice the area for two days and no sex for a week. He also prescribed me some pain meds which I decided not to take. He never told me about the "testicle support pouch" you're supposed to use to help alleviate tension. I was in bed for 4 days just to ensure I wasn't doing any strenuous movement while healing. On the second day I realized the stitching on the left side came undone. Coincidence it was the same side he had complications with? I think not. The incision was now open for two days so I ended up going to my primary doctor to make sure it didn't get infected. She said there was no need to re-stitch it as long as I didn't do strenuous activities and prescribed me a local ointment. On the third day I had an unbelievable hematoma starting on the left of my scrotum all the way down to my thigh. It only went away after 2 weeks. I didn't have sex for about 2 months since the pain was still lingering. It has been 5 months since the procedure and things are still not back to normal. I'd hate to have to go back (afraid of what they'll tell me) but unfortunately at this point I don't think I should wait any longer. I feel different types of pain and discomfort that comes and goes. As days go by I can feel it progressively worsen. I wouldn't tell someone NOT to have this procedure, but definitely get someone more experienced and make sure to LOOK for referrals. Another thing I highly recommend is to find a place that will put you to sleep. DO NOT listen to them saying it's a minor surgery and doesn't need a general anesthesia. If there's a slight chance of you going through what I did, don't even think about it. Just do it. The memory of having someone PULLING and TUGGING your testicle nerve is NOT FUN. Do yourself a favor and only do it if they agree to put you to sleep. read more

A patient was upset because of an insurance issues. She never yelled and never attacked the receptionist. She was near tears saying then forget it and why didnt you call me. The receptionist then said "what do you expect me to do". Very unprofessional. Unless the receptionist is personally attacked it's their responsibility to be professional and empathetic. The patient is dying and now won't go back to a doctor. Do not bring a loved on here period. I have been a medical professional half my life and I have never witnessed such a disregard for patient comfort. read more
