The tea room is housed in the old boiler room of Smeaton House (now sadly long gone). It is not smart but it is very relaxed and cosy, the staff are always very friendly and helpful, and the baking never disappoints. I also really like the fact that the nursery is just that wonderful plants, none of the usual 'garden centre' ephemera. The nursery staff are also extremely welcoming. I recommend Smeaton unreservedly except that I don't want it to become too popular as I love its peaceful atmosphere!

The cookie I "just wanted to try" was gone before I made it back to my seat, and I briefly considered pretending I dropped it so I could justify getting another. The staff are friendly but efficient in that "we actually like working here" way you don't see often. Even when it's busy, the vibe is relaxed, like everyone collectively agreed to stop being in a hurry. If you're looking for a café with great food, a killer view, and cookies that could end relationships, The Beach House is it.

The menu is standard cafe fare - a page devoted to breakfast and all the regular things you'd expect to see for lunch. I ordered the pancakes (I LOVE PANCAKES) and was pleasantly surprised to see a huge plate of food arrive in front of me. Four large pancakes with accompanying bacon rashers slathered in maple syrup. The lunch was good and filled me up so much I couldn't eat the last pancake. I would eat here again, as it does its job perfectly well and the food was fine. The cafe was really dark though and terribly stuffy so I wasn't a fan of the atmosphere, but saying that it would appear there's not much else on offer in the town. So if this is the only place for pancakes, you could do an awful lot worse!

The coffee was not very expensive at all, and when I was looking around I found that this place offered a lot more than just your normal coffee. On top of a range of hot drinks, this place also offers small bites to eat including soup and small sandwiches. When I was in, the coffee House was not full, but was certainly getting busier when I left during the mid afternoon. A laid back atmosphere which is always nice when having a coffee.

I think there were some chopped up chives in the sauce, maybe, I don't know. All I know is yummmm. We also ordered the 3 cheese platter. Basically you go up to the front and choose any 3 cheeses you like then they will serve it to you along with home made oat cakes, scones, grapes and chutney. We selected the Brie, Ansther red, and the apricot Stilton. They were all delicious but particularly the Brie. It tasted so fresh and like actual milk. The best part of this trip was sitting outside and enjoying the beautiful weather and amazing view.
