Also formally known as The Valley Rocket, Merthyr Tydfil Railway Station is probably the best escape to the City possible. Trains are reliable and dead clean and super reasonable compared to the car parking prices in the capitol itself.
There's no real station as such, more like a platform with a bench and car park. There are only 34 car parking spaces for the station and its free to use but you'd be super lucky if get one. And don't be fooled to use the safety of Tesco's car park, you will be fined.
Trains go every half hour to Cardiff on the 08 past or 38 to. That's in the week, times vary on the weekend.
It takes around an hour to get to the capitol but the scenery on the way down is pleasant enough. The conductors are usually quite perky and very handy with the old info!
This is a service that is incredibly handy for commuters and even handier for weekenders.
Beware that on International rugby matches the trains are completely chocker so its best to go at least an hour earlier than you were planning! To be honest it's slightly chaotic. read more
