Sadly, it was not to be. After the tragedy of Spain-Chile, we needed a pick me up; specifically, mojitos. A friend suggested Metropolitan, which was quite close, so we decided to give it a try. I can't exactly put my finger on what type of bar it is - a bit trendy, a bit divey - but they certainly knock out a good mojito! Also, major props for the fact that they stock about ten different bottled craft beers, which include a couple from the Madrid-based La Virgen. Service was friendly. The bar was relatively quiet for the night before a holiday, but I suspect that after the football result the Madrileños didn't feel like partying.

I visited on a rainy Thursday night so there wasn't a large crowd and I grabbed an open seat at the end of the bar. A friendly gentleman gave me a menu and asked what I was interested in. When I mentioned the Old Fashioned, he advised that it was an Amaro-based version without the usual bourbon/whiskey spirit. I noticed a Brooklyn and commented that I sometimes made those at home. Very politely he noted that if I was making them in the US, it wasn't with Amer Picon, which isn't available in the US. He's right. So an actual, real Brooklyn it would be! I thoroughly enjoyed the Brooklyn. I also enjoyed some brief conversation with the bartender who was very good. The kind who uses the spoon or straw to taste each drink to ensure it was made properly. As I was paying my bill and mentioning to the gentleman who initially greeted me that I wanted to bring my business partners here later in the week, he wrote his phone number on a business card and told me to call him in advance as the bar got very busy when it wasn't raining. Turns out, this friendly man is Alberto the owner! Guess I didn't do quite as much research as I could have! I regret we weren't able to make a second visit to 1862 Dry Bar on this particular trip, but it is going to be my first stop next time I'm back in Madrid. Great vibe, excellent staff and a classy and friendly owner.

Or for a couple euro extra a more filling choice is the Santiaguino--which is in the savory family as the common toasted baguette bread and grated fresh tomato (also a yummy breakfast choice) but instead topped with diced serrano ham, manchego cheese and olive oil. My family also liked the large English and American breakfasts, where you can get your choice of eggs and more meat. Therefore, we went. We sat outside as is customary to do in Spain because it's always beautiful and sunny here, so why not. Like most Spanish restaurants, we began with a small snack of potato chips and drinks...the Spanish love their potato chips appetizers. My drink was good. They called it "smoky," which was a vermouth with a little bite of spice at the end. The food was something else, and I mean that in a bad way. My wife's fish and a chips were extremely skimpy and the fish still had the skin on them. My sons French fry dish was drenched in oil, very lubricated. However, my tortilla was the perfect size with great bread. Nevertheless, all this cost us €85, which is way too expensive for not just the quality of the food but also for the area. The service was very lax. It took forever to get service, both when we arrived and when we wanted to the check. This kind of chill service is common in Spain but here it was too extensive, even for Spain. Overall, the food was expensive for how mediocre it tasted and for how long we waited. We will probably not go back, not even for a date night, especially when there are so many other, better options from which to choose.
