In December 2025 a Grand Junction police officer saw me cross Horizon Drive carrying a gallon of…read moremilk and cinnamon roles from Safeway. He stopped me and informed me that I was jaywalking. He talked to me as though I was the biggest dumb--s in the universe. That amused me considering that I had recently moved to GJ from downtown San Antonio. I had also lived in Hong Kong, Bangkok, Paris, Moscow and Belgrade, to name a few. I simply presumed that he was a local yokel cop with a very narrow perspective on the world. I tried to explain to him that GJ drivers don't always yield to crosswalk pedestrians due to their cell phone distraction. In fact, a few weeks before a driver had sped through a crosswalk in GJ and had killed a pedestrian. The local homeless shelter had also closed a few weeks earlier. I suspected that he presumed that I was homeless and was merely harassing me. Having also been to Afghanistan five times as a USG security contractor, I was tempted to tell the officer that if he desired to be a hero, it probably wasn't going to happen by acting a typical provincial redneck-like cop in Grand Junction, Colorado, USA.

They sure aren't busy cleaning up all the cartel cocaine or the home cooked meth here in this city but they are sure enough too busy to care about your needs or concerns.

GREAT DOWNTOWN AREA TO WALK AROUND…read more====================================== If you are driving from Los Angeles to Denver in the summer this is a good place to stay overnight. I didn't include the winter because you don't want to drive at night in the middle of no man's land on that long stretch west of Grand Junction. We usually just stay one night, but there are lots of things to do in the area. The Colorado River is nearby, the Dinosaur Museum, off-roading trails, hiking, mountain biking, snow skiing and lots of other things. I was really impressed by Grand Junction's Main Street with all the restaurants and shops. If you stay in Grand Junction try to find a hotel or Airbnb near Main Street. You won't have to drive to go out to lunch or dinner because there are plenty of spots.

The beauty of these larger little cities isn't lost on me. Sure, you can find a lot of big box…read morestores which makes it very convenient for a few of the 67k people who call Grand Junction home, but the city center and its surrounding blocks still boast the quaint, mom and pop shops you can usually only find in small towns. Thank God for that because these small businesses truly are what makes a city wonderful. GJ might be a little rough around the edges, but anyone can see the amount of work that's gone into building a diverse community of business, industry, and residence. It's been about 9 years since I've visited GJ, and I was surprised to see the amount of growth. That growth likely means jobs and making a living toward the American dream. A quick real estate search returned several affordable options - I know if I were seeking to live here, I'd like to find something with a view. The plains, the mountains, either one can be found here if you're patient. It's easy to understand why surrounding cities make Grand Junction a regular stop for errands or a short getaway for a meal. It's relatively relaxing and easy to find or drive to anything you're looking for. I'm glad I made the trip. Next time, I'll scope out a nifty restaurant or three.
