Mesa Farta Restaurant in the coastal city of Tavira in the Algarve region of Portugal is a destination unto itself. Many reasons why one would want to visit the region of course and many do. But if you want creative takes on traditional Portuguese dishes, then seek out this dining experience with award winning chef João Viegas and his super talented team.
Mesa Farta translated literally is Full Table. I'd say it is appropriate to say it means bountiful table as you will be both literally full and also, more meaningfully, your life will be full from such a sublime dining experience.
We dined on a Wednesday where the tasteful dining room was full but not crowded, lively but not loud. We were greeted warmly by the head waiter and seated as per our reservation in a table with both chairs facing the open kitchen. It was like having tickets for the theater as João and the four other in the kitchen performed almost silently, efficiently, and so expertly without stop throughout the evening. My dining companion was a regular so we had the privilege of a few words with the chef and excellent dialogue with the head waiter to find the freshest combo of three creative appetizers and then my friend's favorite dish for two, red snapper cheek rice, samphire, and garlic (typically it is monkfish but special treat our night). The mackerel with Algarve-style carrots sounds so basic yet was a taste combination I couldn't imagine and now won't forget. The finely chopped red shrimp set within a veal sauce with parsley served over what can only be called a hybrid between cracker and a piece of toast was divine in ways that again, hard to imagine combinations sometimes are. The kickoff, garlic skate fritters with smoked roe and lemon were just absolutely the bomb. Hard not to get another order despite having loads of food. We somehow resisted.
The wine pairing was excellent, Encruzado 2021 from Chão da Quinta, and was just the kind of white for seafood and hot temperatures outside. Their cellar, according to my dining companion, is extensive and of high quality.
Chef João Viegas could be anywhere as someone who has won Portuguese chef of the year and has learned his trade in Michelin star restaurants. But he has come back to his hometown in Tavira, a good place to be from all things considered, and created a new restaurant that should be on your list for the Algarve. It will not surprise me if stars are in future for Mesa Farta. read more
