Fast forward we were not able to sit in as the owner stated she was going to close in an hour and 30 minutes and you could only do take away at that time. Was not happy about that but just went along with it. Placed out orders for a veggie platter and made sure the injera was gluten free. Walked next door to take a look while she was preparing our food for take away. Came back and the food was packed and ready. Oh and just a heads up they do take card and cash. If you have a US card her machine does take it even if she states she doesn't think it will. I did it and she was shocked lol. Food is packed and we leave. After getting back to our rooms and opening the food...that smell I was speaking about in the beginning we can all smell again. It was a unbearable smell that made it extremely difficult to eat the food. I was able to eat the injera and it really smelled and taste (maybe in my head) like the smell. I ate the veggies and even though it had a slight smell I was able to complete that but the injera was a BIG NO! All in all we could not figure out the smell. The owner was a sweet lady, but I wished she wouldn't have told us to take away as it took away from the experience. I wish I was able to give 5 stars like most folks...but I have to be honest with my experience.

I wanted to go for the lamb but Genetesh advised me to pick the N°21, "Spicy" beef with 1 injera and a local ethiopian beer to get it all down...perfect combo. Kokeb is all-in-one. Excellent ethiopian food comes together with the local decor & music...and Genetesh is there help you feel welcome, relaxed, at home...she'll also help you out if this is your first ethiopian experience (bye bye fork, hello right hand). How bizarre! But then some of my best Korean food ever was decades ago in a Swiss and Korean replace in Berlin. Yes, fondue and bibimbap! We had a little trouble finding the place due to the illogical numbering system of the houses. But once we were here, we were relieved and enthralled. We ordered off the Ethiopian menus which was quite extensive. There were only two of us, and, as usually, we ordered too much. For meat we had the regular kitfo with aye band the awaze tibs. The kitfo was perfect, raw with niter kibbe and just the right amount of mitmita. The Ayer was obviously house made. The awaze tibs were also delicious although perhaps a little overcooked. We also had the veggie combo. The miser wat was superb. Even the mild veggies such as the kik alicha were flavorful. And the gomen actually was made with collards, not spinach like often in Europe. The injera was also good. Service was delightful. And we had a choice of several Ethiopian beers. (I did not try any Thai food here. I am also a Thai food snob! But at our current main residence, we get great Thai but only mediocre to poor Ethiopian. Therefore, our choice today! Definitely a winner!

I had wanted to try out this place for a long time, so the other night, I finally came here with a small bunch of friends. When we arrived, we were among the first people, but soon the restaurant filled up and by the time we left, there was a healthy huzzle & buzzle...We had a really nice table by the window, overlooking Tufnell Park High Street and in fact, during our meal we observed a few obscure incidences, like for a example a driver having difficulty parking and then honking at the delivery guy, who'd ill-parked his moped. I recommend coming here with a group as you then can try out as many of their dishes - I'd say a group size of 4-6 people is ideal and family style eating is a must! In fact, the way the dishes are most commonly served is this: a large platter is laid out with injera (the typical Ethiopian sponge-cake like bread) and then when the dishes arrive, they are generously and colourfully spread out on the bread (see picture). Over time, the juices of the dishes get soaked up by the bread and in the end make for a really tasty finishing: the dishes I enjoyed most were the spicy beef and the spinach. I wasn't so much a fan of the aubergine & chickpea dish, as the aubergine was not cooked through (could be a one-time error though.) So, why am I in doubt? - My biggest pet-peeve of all, service, wasn't quite met. I mean, our waitress was really nice, but she could've been a little bit more outgoing and enthusiastic. After all, most people have not had Ethiopian food before, and so they're curious about it and want to know more about what is good and what they can expect...this information wasn't shared with us and had to be "painfully" extracted from our waitress...

We tried a cold aubergine dip to start which I hadn't come across in Ethiopia, it's like babaghanoush. It came with fried (crispy) injera (or I think it was injera) which had a very unusual strong taste so, interestingly, the more gently flavoured dip was like the accompaniment rather than the other way around! Worth a try. For the main course we got the special kitfo (raw), some kind of lamb wot and the vegetable platter for two - this was shared between four people and was sufficient even with me eating about 3 normal portions. The kitfo was a specially large portion. Not the best I've had but not bad either. The vegetarian platter was really nice - we got the one with shiro (again not the most decadently rich and flavourful I've had, but fine) and I really liked the aubergine/chickpea dish plus the spinach one. Lamb isn't my favourite but the sauce was fiery and delicious. As others have said service is not swift but we weren't in a hurry so it didn't matter at all. They are very nice in here and it's a very pleasant place to get good and unusual food for a reasonable price - food plus 2 beers each (glass of decent Cotes du Rhone for me) came to about £21 each. The reason is the waiter/owner was grumpy and when I asked for a takeaway box for the moyin moyin he actually scowled! Wow. The moyin moyin is quite flavourful but the jollof rice is a real disappointment. I've had far better in Ghana. Two years ago: I popped into here for lunch around 1:30pm today and whilst the owner could have been friendlier in greeting me (a smile doesn't hurt ya know), I appreciated him coming outside the restaurant to hand me my takeaway food where I had waited in the lovely sun for my order. The interior is quite small with only a couple of tables with lovely African sculptures all around. There is chalkboard of specials along with the regular menu. Sadly the sweet potato balls were sold out so I got the moin moin and the spinach stew. All together less than a tenner. There are four pieces of moin moin, which are just deliciously savoury. I recommend eating them with the nonspicy spinach stew with melon seed, which, whilst not delicious, was tasty and filling. It would be perfect on a cold winter night. If I was in the area, I would return just for the moin moin!

I usually go for okra and collards plus something of lentils and a random pick. I'm so glad I went for the whole Lentils but I wish I'd tried the split peas too! The cabbage and potato was super tasty. I wish I could've tried the whole menu! The only criticism I can think of is: Maybe the collard greens and okra could've had more flavour, in order to stand up to those other punchy dishes, but they were still good. What really blew me away was the Injera best I've ever had in London, the texture and flavour were amazing! I can't wait to go back.
