I met friends of mine here, giving the place their highest recommendation, which was well placed: the food here was amazing! We got the House Favourite Vegan Selection (one of my friends is vegetarian), with tasteful selections served on a platter of injera. So yummy! Even better was the homemade tej (honey wine), which the owner herself makes. Honestly, the best tej I've ever had. The owner and staff were so friendly and accommodating! The restaurant is in Cumberland, which seems like it might be inconvenient if you're staying downtown. Don't be dissuaded! The 68 bus leaves from Euston regularly all day, and drops you off across the street. The return bus stop is right in front of the restaurant, so you can make your way there and back without hassle. Next time I'm in London, this place is definitely on my list of places to go for a meal! read more

Really solid Ethiopian food, sadly not great service and not a great atmosphere. This nice Ethiopian restaurant is a neighborhood place well outside the hustle and bustle of central London. The folks who run it are very sweet and super kind. And the food is tasty and fairly priced. The mixed plate is the way to go. Ill be honest..I was surprised, I had never been to the area but felt like trying a new restaurant . Everything was excellently prepared and nicely presented. I booked on open table, glad I did it filled up fairly quick with groups and other couples. Very nice intimate but also good for families and groups, we will be back. We are here tonight and were not disappointed. Don't let the plain exterior fo you, inside some awesome food, people and service is waiting. We got the bread to start with, which was deliciously spiced. We decided to do their meal for two, with several items on the platter, and added one more as there were three of us. Oh my word, the food was outstanding. The beef was spicy and perfect. The chicken was, as well. The chickpeas were so good and the other items were all tasty. We all three agreed that there was not a single thing on that large platter that we did not like. The spongey bread was cooked perfectly and we thoroughly enjoyed dipping into all the different dishes. The staff were very friendly and answered any questions we had. I had to convince my wife to travel outside downtown a bit on the bus, but we were rewarded with an outstanding meal. The staff was constantly courteous and helped us pick out a meal (we had the large shared plate which I recommend as it's a great deal at £24 for 2) and each and every sauce and meat we tried was better than the last one. I asked my wife what the green one was, she said "awesomeness!" Definitely worth the short ride out. Yeah, it's in a somewhat dirtier part of town and a bit hard to spot back from the main road (look in a small plaza behind an Islamic Center), but make the trip put and you'll be pleased! read more

Located in a discreet corner of a small block of stores, Zeret can be easy to miss. But that would be a mistake as Zeret is a nice surprise hidden in the middle of Camberwell. We walked in around 8:30 on a Saturday, slightly confused by the very dim lighting. "Is it opened?" we asked each other as we peered through the window and were greeted by diners' eyes staring back at us from behind the glass. It was quiet, but the two waitresses couldn't have paid more attention to us even if it was packed. We ordered the £16 meat combination (dishes: one spicy ground beef, one lamb on bone, one ground lamb, and one amazing chicken) and £7 veggie combination (dishes: salad, potato and carrot, lentils). In retrospect, the meat combination was enough, but we wanted to try an eclectic mix. Throughout the whole meal, the adorably sweet ladies offered us more sauce for the injera, then more injera... it was a vicious cycle and we were absolutely stuffed at the end of the meal. Really enjoyed our meal here and at such affordable prices, I'd love to come here more often. read more

We chose this restaurant while on vacation in London based on prior reviews. The outside of the restaurant is modest. The restaurant is quaint. We enjoyed the bread appetizer, vegan platter, & wine from South Africa. The orange chickpea & green lentil dishes were our favorites. Delicious. Our server was very kind & friendly. One of our guests ordered the Ethiopian wine, which wasn't available. It appeared a batch of popcorn was burned while we were there, which is an unfortunate smell during dinner. We wished we'd received wash towels before & after our meals (as we have at other Ethiopian restaurants), provided it is custom to eat with your hands. Good food, good value, very sweet and personable family run restaurant. I went with my girlfriend. We usually opt for a vegetarian sampler, plus one or two other items. We noticed that they had a two person special for £16 that includes two lamb dishes, a beef dish, a chicken dish, and some vegetable dishes. We usually don't go for so much meat, so we asked if we could get that special but with more vegetables and less meat, and the woman who ran the dining room was more than happy to accommodate us. We left our order in her hands and she returned with a nice variety of tasty dishes atop injera bread in the usual fashion. During our meal she made the rounds with additional rolls of injera as people needed them. They also offer a coffee ceremony that involves raw beans roasted over a coal stove set up at a little shrine in the dining room. It was fairly busy that night, and upon leaving, the woman who served us apologized for not giving us more attention. There was absolutely nothing wrong with her service. She is just so sweet that she wished she could have had more time to visit with us. The dining room is very classy and appropriate for a date. Everything was well spiced and flavorful, but the chicken, orange chickpea, and green lentil dishes were our hands-down favorites. Try the honey wine for something a little different! Zeret has the best Ethiopian food in all of London. The best. The food at this family-run restaurant has that homemade feel. Fluffy, sour injera and the most delicious meat and vegetable gravies with that staple Ethiopian spice, berber. Try the messr wot, shuro wat, and tibs. St George's Ethiopian beer and the spicy tea are also very good. The lady who runs this place is lovely and very friendly. The service tends to be quite slow and they prefer cash, though they do accept cards (I think there is a surcharge). Also, the neighbourhood is slightly dodgy. Very slightly. But the food is so worth these niggles! A tip: do eat with your fingers rather than steel cutlery. You'll enjoy the food much more and after all, when in Rome... read more

Zeret Kitchen is a lovely family run Ethiopean Restaurant tucked away in a run of local shops on the side of the Castlemead Estate. The owner is really friendly and happy to explain the history and customs of Ethiopea as well as teach you how to eat Ethiopean style. The first time we went it took us a while to locate it (since it doesn't look like the most obvious place to find such a lovely restaurant) but we have been going for a couple of the years now and the food and service remain fantastic while the prices remain cheap. Would thoroughly recommend it to anyone who likes spicy food - I have a couple of friends who insist on a trip to Zeret whenever they come to stay. read more

Noticed this place was close-ish to where I'm living, so decided to give it a try. It's probably a bit out of the way for most people, but if you're in the mood for some Ethiopian it's really not that hard to get to - just get the bus from Elephant and Castle. It's in a dingy looking council block, but inside the atmosphere is fine. I found it had been described as both an Ethiopian and Eritrean restaurant - which doesn't really make much of a difference as the two countries are next to each other and the cuisine is very similar. Like the others here, I opted for the £16 platter for two (luckily I had a dining companion with me!) There was a good mix of vegetables and meat, and we were both very full and couldn't finish all of the injera (flat bread). The food was delicious, and will be cooked according to your spice preference. I like spicy food but my dining companion didn't, so I was able to get some chilli on the side! The staff here are lovely and accommodating and will always explain dishes to those unfamiliar with the cuisine. I discovered Zeret five years ago when I started working near by. Back then the premises were split between the restraint and a cafe that were both run by the same Ethiopian family. Over the last half-decade the restaurant has grown and they have been able to close the cafe and devote themselves full-time to their wonderful food. Fantastic food in a warm and welcoming atmosphere set back from the road. I had tried Ethiopian quinine a couple of times before but never locally, it became a fast favourite and I have tried to introduce as many friends and family members as I could to it. Their success is well deserved and I recommend them highly to both those familiar with Ethiopian find and newcomers alike. read more
