It is one of the oldest stations on the Lisbon network, having opened in 1959. It is an underground station and is surprisingly handicapped accessible. At the street level, look for the lift station. I couldn't find it. That would have been helpful for me with my big suitcase today. Instead, I lugged it down the stairs. The ticketing concourse has the usual automated vending machines (my 24 hour ticket hasn't expired yet!) and turnstiles. On the Yellow line, it is between Campo Pequeno (towards Odivelas and Picoas (towards Rato). And on the Red Line, it is between São Sebastião (the next station is the end of the line) and Alameda (towards Aeroporto). Signage was good enough that I did not get lost or on the wrong platform. You can use the red line from this station to get to the Airport within 19 minutes, and the central location within the city would make this a likely stopover point for those travelling to the Airport. It is also reasonably close to the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel. The Lisbon Metro seemed straightforward to navigate between lines and in stations. Ticket machines have an English language option. The pricing is reasonable, costing €1.80 for unlimited use of the metro within one hour, however, you must also purchase the "navegante card" for 50 cents, this can be re-loaded, but with it only being a tiny bit of paper, it is easy to damage or misplace, and the cost does add up if you keep leaving it behind. The Lisbon Metro as a whole is unique and many of the stations have interesting artwork which can be a tourist attraction in its own right. In terms of everything else, it's pretty much an average Metro station in Lisbon, the art is nice, but there are certain nicer-looking stations on the network, once you're underground it is fairly easy to follow the station and get between lines, with signage provided in English and Portuguese being quite good. I do agree with other reviews that the lift was hard to find, and I too had to carry my large suitcase down the stairs on my way to the Airport. 3*

The Oriente station in Lisbon is a one-stop destination for trains, metro, busses, and rental cars…read more Very busy station as it is a main hub in Lisbon. Estação do Oriente was designed by Spanish architect, Santiago Calatrava. He did the new $2BN design for the World Trade Center Transportation Hub, including the Oculus, although he has renowned designs around the world. The bus depot is behind the train station, as are the offices for the rental cars. We weren't sure where to physically leave the rental car, and after going around the entire station once, I finally told my husband to live park in front of the rental offices, near the taxi queue, and it turned out the agent just came out and took the car from us right there. So don't waste time like we did, drive up, leave someone in the car live parked, and go get your agent. Across the street is the large shopping mall, Centro Vasco da Gama. It is very popular with Lisbonites, but welcome to tourists. Typical big city center mall. I was advised by our rental car office that if you need to use the bathroom, do not use the dirty ones at Estação do Oriente, and instead, head to the mall to use theirs. Good advice! Estação do Oriente is in the Parque de las Naciones district, which is somewhat modernized, and filled with high-rise offices and apartments, not the charming look of the Baixa-Chiado and Barrio Alto districts, where all the cultural and tourist activites are. The two main attractions are really just the train station and the mall, but there is also an aquarium and a casino if you are into such things (which you can get anywhere). The metro is under the trains, as with many cities. Signs for the metro are pretty clear. There are stores and eateries in the station, for your convenience. Nothing amazing to note, again, typical of a large train hub. For a busy train/metro station, walkways and platforms seemed decently clean. Lighting is a bit dark, but at least not the annoying brightness of assaulting fluorescence. There are ticket offices as well as many automated machines for train and metro tickets. There are lines at rush hour, but they move fast, and the Portuguese public are very friendly (all speak English), and very willing to help if you have any trouble or questions.

I arrived at Oriente Train Station via the metro/underground to catch a train. Once you exit the…read moremetro/underground, the signage to enter Oriente is pretty poor, so look for very small train icons pointing with arrows. You essentially have to go up about three levels to get to Oriente. Once there, there are ticket machines and a ticket booth. Although I had tickets already, I had a question and the gentleman was very nice and informative (he spoke limited English). I recommend waiting in the main concurse (open air) rather than going to the platform. Whiles there's a canopy over the tracks, it can be quite bright and there's not a lot of room to sit. Another advantage of waiting on the main concourse is there's a little cafe and vending machines. The cafe has a few tables and sells drinks, coffee, sandwiches, and desserts. The cafe only accepts cash. Be ready to deal with an attendant who could be friendlier. Overall, decent train station but it needs better signage, as it lacks a large screen with all upcoming arrivals and departures. You also can't hear announcements very well. Pro Tip: If you want to grab drinks and food for the train, there's a supermarket inside the mall across the street.

The station was formerly known as Estação Central (Central Station) and the name still appears in its façade. Opened in 1891 to designs by Portuguese architect José Luís Monteiro, the main facade at street level is a wonderful example of Neo-Manueline architecture, named after the heavily decorative hybrid classical-gothic architecture unique to Portugal. It's sinuous curves and entrance arches are reminiscent of Art Nouveau. Once inside, a modern escalator takes you up to the spacious train shed. There's a ticket office, ticket machines and cafe. Trains to Sintra leave every 20 minutes on weekdays (every 10 minutes at rush hour), and half hourly at weekends.

I had walked inside to look at the gift shop on the left and saw the Starbucks on the right, but never saw any indication of a train station there, either. Once I KNEW that it was the train station, I looked harder for a sign, and it was up the elevator from the front of the building. Tickets are at the top of the double elevator and should have been easy to get, but I had to try 3 different machines to get it to work. The machine will encourage you to get a round trip, and know that the round trip ticket is all on one ticket. You won't be issued 2 tickets. The ticket is needed to get in and out of the stations, so make sure to hang onto it until after you've left your final destination. The place is super clean...one of the cleanest train stations I have been in. I wanted this review out here in case someone needed it. I hope it helps folks to avoid the couple of hiccups I had there.

The station opened in 1959 as part of the original Lisbon metro and has since been expanded and retrofitted a couple of times. Today, the platforms appear quite modern and clean. There are many restaurants and hotels in the Praça dos Restauradores. The obelisk in the plaza is a monument that commemorates the end of the Iberian Union in 1640 and the independence of Portugal from Spain. At the ticketing level, you'll find the usual automated ticket vending machines and turnstiles. This is one of the busier stations on the network as it is close to some of the main tourist areas and plazas. Keep an eye on your wallet and other valuables. I loved the large tile mural on the walls of the station, which paid homage to the World's major metropolitan cities in a Kandinsky-esque style. With only two platforms, there are 3 city mural dedicated to them per platform. After a LOT of googling, I think have discovered that the artist of these murals might be a Portuguese artist by the name of Nadir Afonso, and his style of art is geometric abstraction. Lately, there's been water puddling-up at one of the entrances along Av. Liberdade, with no caution signage, which could easily lead to slips/falls. Thus, I'm taking my review down a notch. Otherwise, all is good at Metro Rossio.

The station is handicapped accessible with escalators and elevators between the street level and the platform level. The station has two tracks that go through the center and therefore, there are two side platforms. There is step-free access and free transfer between the two platforms. If there is a below-ground transfer to the Estação do Rossio for regional trains, I couldn't find it. Upstairs to the street, walk across the plaza, into the station. Platforms are clean and there is a sign indicating how long until the next train is due to arrive. Rossio is between Martim Moniz (toward Telheiras) and Baixa-Chiado (toward Cais do Sodré).
