Many items are more expensive than other Independent stores. I am shopping there less and less. Their chocalitine butter croissants have so much glazing and icing sugar and can no longer be purchase as single items but has to be purchased as a package. Instead theoir display is filled with very sugary donuts. They should be promoting healthier items at their bakery. Their produce is more expensive than other places so I go elsewhere to buy these items. Ther is less and less every day that I buy there, especially over the past few years when new management took over.

I picked up some chicken breasts, dated to be good for 5 more days and they had a clear funk without even being opened, so they obviously did not come home with me. Self checkout is limited to 25 items- what difference does a cashier make vs self checkout? So was forced to go to a cashier, and she kept hitting the conveyer button on me as in trying to load my paid for groceries, even though there was an empty belt next to me. I got frustrated and had to ask her to stop as she was destroying my bread. If you're going to force me to go to a cashier, maybe make sure they have patience. Otherwise let me bag my own stuff in piece at a self checkout. They had most of what I wanted but not all, it is great for bread, pantry items etc, but always double check your meat and veggies for mold/funk 50/50 on getting good service from a cashier lol. Maybe she needs a coffee and a hug?

Food Basics is a grocery store under the Metro banner. It's a discount grocery store like No Frills…read more(which is under the Loblaws banner), I'm pretty sure they are competitors. Here in Ottawa though, the amount of Food Basics stores greatly outnumber those of No Frills. Not all locations are equal. The Food Basics in Stittsville is much nicer than this Food Basics in Hampton Plaza. This one is a bit dirtier and the people here are a bit saltier, lol. My work colleague told me that she once sent her husband to this Food Basics to pick up something for her and when he got home he said to her "please don't ever send me there again!" Lol. I don't think it's that bad. I go there when there are sales. I also go there to poke around when I'm waiting for my pizza at Domino's, which is in the same plaza, haha. It's a discount grocery store with fairly good regular prices and really great sales. Not the nicest in terms of appearance or clientele, but hey, you win some you lose some. Lots of free parking in the plaza.

The Longer Version: This small grocery store reminds me of the small grocery stores my mom used to take me to on weekends in Toronto's Chinatown when I was a kid. The store is not all that aesthetically pleasing, and some would consider it dingy looking, but it is functional. I like coming here for dried noodles. They also have cakes and cookies from Hung Loi bakery in Toronto. Prices are reasonable and selection is decent. I like small independent grocery stores, but I fear they are a dying breed. So while these days you can get lots of Asian items at mainstream supermarkets like Loblaws, Metro and Sobeys, I do prefer to support the little guys when I can. #172 (2025)

Here, while the store is small, the selection is good and covers the most popular items and it is fresh. They also sell fruits, vegetables, frozen food, noodles, dried food and some fresh noodles and won ton wrappers. Definitely coming back for my essentials.

The Long Version: My parents first introduced me to Green Fresh when they only had one location (the OG that was on Selkirk, that has since closed down). It was dingy and run down, but had lots of Asian ingredients that they were looking for. And it was the closest Asian grocery store to where they lived. They were thrilled when it moved to McArthur and had a total facelift, it was new, bright and clean. Green Fresh then opened a second location in Nepean on Merivale, closer to my neck of the woods. Then in January 2025, they opened this third location in Kanata/Stittsville. It's in the Grant Crossing, where the Bed, Bath and Beyond used to be (next to the Value Village). This newest location is very similar to the Nepean location. It even has the same bubble tea vendor inside (Y-Not Go For Tea). Which is a bit funny because the first Y-Not Go For Tea location is inside the Hunt Club T&T and T&T and Green Fresh are competitors! The Vanier Green Fresh has a different bubble tea vendor though: World Tea House. I visited this Kanata/Stittsville location shortly after opening, so maybe they don't have all their stuff together yet because although they have a section labelled "Bakery" they didn't have any baked goods :( However, they do have a prepared food section. It's self-serve and you pay by the weight ($2.29 per 100g). They also have a counter where they make Jianbing, Chinese crepes. There was a huge line up for these when I went, so they are definitely popular. They have lots of items, including snacks (my favourite aisles), lol. Most of the products are from China, but they have items from other countries too. They had Kracie DIY gummy kits imported from Japan. And they were only $4.99. The west end is now flush with Asian grocery stores (T&T, Kowloon, now Green Fresh, and soon Sunny Food Mart) compared to the east end (to my parents' chagrin). I'd say the prices here are the lowest generally speaking. However, the prepared foods did not look as appetizing to me as at the other Asian grocery stores. Free parking in the plaza parking lot. The produce was good quality and well stocked, as were most of the other areas. I haven't been to any other grocery stores in the area to see how their prices compare, but in general, prices seemed reasonable. This could easily be a one-stop grocery shop for folks living in the area, and if you are staying at one of the nearby hotels, as was the case for me, it's a great place to pick up a few supplies.

The store is bright, and the aisles are wider with a lot more variety of products to chose from. P.S. their candy aisle is heaven. The produce is why I come here in the first place. I trust their quality and the prices are not bad either. I love how they have stations to get hot food, like burgers, fries and pizza. I recommend their fries, and usually always get some at the end of my shopping trip. They remind me of chip wagon fries, and are cooked and salted perfectly. Their poutine is also amazing. They still have their famous salad bar and hot bar, but due to covid, the salads are pre packaged and ready to grab, although if you still want to make your own, they have an employee working that section to serve you. There is a bridgehead coffee shop inside this location as well. Parking lot has improved with plenty of spaces. I cannot say enough good things about the new store.

Good parking and access make it easy to get to. Farm boy seems to be converting slowly over to private branding, and so far, of what I've tried, the quality is good. Staff are always pleasant, and, I swear they teach them to bag properly. No squished eggs or produce. It's a bit of a lost art these days to pack groceries properly, so thank you to their training team.
