I am handicapped with a broken arm and nerve damage. I was invited to an event here and was denied at the door by the doorman for not having a jacket on. I am unable to fit a jacket over my arm as it has a large cast. The doorman informed me he did not believe handicap should get special preference. Sometimes humanity shows its true colors. The Metropolitan Club is one of those places that you'll see when you're invited for a special event or if you're part of the rich and famous and want to make a statement by hosting a wedding or gala here. It just screams royalty the moment you enter the gates when coming out of the subway. There's quite a many ballrooms and event spaces. When I was there, there were maybe 6 different events happening in the same evening. I didn't even realize it was 5 stories high. But while you're there, enjoy the moment because you probably won't be back there unless you people high up. And remember to dress appropriately because they will turn you away if you're not dressed properly. read more

This is a very beautiful building that reminds me of the capital or Versailles! It is very ornate, and very beautiful. The architecture is stunning. The dress code is strictly jacket and tie. I am not a member, but was invited to hear a discussion and have a buffet dinner. Though not the best buffet I have had, it was quite adequate. This is a peak at where the really wealthy gather. I assume that this would be on par with some of the Ivy League clubs scattered around town, but I wouldn't really know! If you get a chance to see this place, don't pass it up. read more

The Metropolitan Club is arguably the most architecturally grand clubhouse in NYC. Upon entering their gates on East 60th St. and walking into their massive marble lobby, you immediately realize you're somewhere very special -- esp. with its imposing staircase. That staircase is often used to great effect during special events. That is where the Knights of Malta make announcements during their White Cross Ball...and where blonde minstrels with candles in their hair wow the gathering crowd below during the annual Scandinavian Christmas Ball. Next to the lobby are other beautiful rooms like their huge gilded ballroom as well as other baroque (or is it rococo?) styled salons. You almost feel like you're in Versailles. The top of the stairs leads to impressive dining halls -- my favorite is the patio where one can dine al fresco with a view overlooking Central Park. Like similar clubs (i.e. the University Club, Knickerbocker Club, etc.), the dress code is strictly business formal and above. If you're invited to an event at the Metropolitan Club, make sure you go. read more

I was visiting NY again and used my membership at another club in Houston to visit the Metropolitan Club. It was very worth it. The service was fantastic. The food was stellar. I also liked their wine list. But the best part -- was the view. Outstanding view and a great environment for a work dinner. I highly recommend it. read more

Fancy shmancy! Right on 5th and 60th lies this Goliath of a building with a fenced front courtyard. It was December so there was a rather large Christmas tree. The main space itself is to the left, where many simultaneous parties can be happening at the same time. There is a central atrium with large chandeliers and a double staircase to one side. It's impressive with historical stature. The party I was in was on the next floor up in one of the corner rooms. It was nicely catered with huge amounts of desserts and food. I think it's a lovely place to have an event but can't imagine it being really cheap... read more

From now on, this is probably one of my favorite social clubs in NYC. I was invited to a gala event there and I was delighted from the moment I walked in. I was greeted by a beautiful Christmas tree and I couldn't believe how beautiful the decor inside was. I couldn't stop looking everywhere and taking pictures from everything I saw. Rude Staff!! As a favor to a friend, I set aside my evening plans to attend their annual "Governor Ball". The guests, waiters, waitresses were all very friendly and welcoming. However, the management staff spent the evening hoovering their guest looking for "rule violations" and toward the end of the evening they found one... me! On the dance floor I foolishly loosed my tie- encircling tuxedoed vultures had their victim! I was immediately ejected from the dance floor and ushered to a waiting area. No explanation, no pleasantries, no general manners. The accused was informed of his crime... a loose knot in my tie! I offered my heartfelt apology, re-Windsored and with some negotiation allowed re-admittance. Dine at your risk... but you've been warned. Keep your necks tightly noosed! read more

Members only! However, I am not a member! I am a member of a reciprocal club in NYC and I was able to make reservations in the rooftop dining room for myself and 9 friends on Saturday night. The food was wonderful! I would love to come back on a summer evening and have dinner on the terrace, fantastic view!!! For starters, I had the escargot with artichoke hearts. I shared my neighbor's lobster salad. Both appetizers were outstanding! But I would have to prefer my snails over the lobster. For my main dish, I went with the venison, medium rare! Hands down, unbelievable dish!!! For the sides.......I would highly recommend the salsifry!!!!! It is absolutely delicious!!! I came here for an event and this club just "elevated" the entire event. It is really one of the most beautiful and historic buildings in Manhattan. I would say almost like a museum/old mansion. This is more of a historical club than one of the newer clubs. Like everything looked like it could use a good cleaning, quite frankly, so it does show its age but I think nothing can be done to rectify that without losing some of the history and authenticity of this place. I can see why people would host a wedding here, but really I think it is a bit over the top for that quite frankly. Too much gold everywhere and too ornate and too stuffy. Like the West Lounge and Ballroom are a bit too Versailles, with a lot of gold, paintings on the ceiling, and even stained glass windows. That said, I think both charity and non-charity events are a good choice for this venue. The views are lovely and you feel so close to Central Park. I did explore three of the floors. I much prefer the more subdued and modern Union Club or Yale Club personally. Or though not a club but a mansion, my absolute fave remains the Harold Pratt House. Service is a bit hit or miss. Some of the servers were a bit phoning it in, but the more senior staff members were extremely cordial. The food was good, but not great. That said, I have had worse wedding food. All the dishes were beautifully decorated. I did appreciate how there always seemed to be coffee, tea and lemon water available like every second with nary a used cup in sight at all times somehow. I'm glad I got to check this place out. Not a fave for me personally, but still grand and memorable. read more

This place is the epitome of the upper east side, fabulous! If architecture and ambiance is as important as the cuisine, then you'll absolutely love this place. It's very exclusive, members only, but if you do get the chance it'll definitely be worth your while. The staff is friendly and hospitable, the quality of construction is exquisite, which is expected seeing as tycoons such as the Vanderbilt's and JP Morgan were founders. Cocktail was phenomenal, huge variety ranging from freshly made sushi, to pasta dishes, to shrimp cocktails, roasted beef, turkey, and of course top shelf open bar. Definitely a great choice for high end functions, or a classy night out. read more

I have been here twice for dinner at a large private function and the decor of the place is traditional, old world, and beautiful. Gentlemen must wear jacket and tie (no exceptions!) so all guests must be forewarned accordingly. The food there was passable, and both times that I was there, service was rushed and gruff. Their waitstaff service was definitely sub-par using any yardstick, no less for a private club. If not for the saving grace of the historical beauty of this place, and relatively affordable banquet menu pricings, the food and service would not normally be something a host would feel inclined to repeatedly host a function there. read more

We had our wedding at the Metropolitan club this passed weekend and boy were we beyond satisfied. From its old world charm and elegance to its amazing food and beverage choices the venue did not disappoint. We chose to stay at the club (which they kindly provided as part of the package). The suite was stunning. It's hard to find pictures of their guest rooms but these rooms are nicer than some of the top hotels in the city. If you are lucky enough to stay in one you will not be disappointed. The food and wine options were top notch and there was not a single guest at the wedding who did not enjoy the food. Our contact at the club was Dawn and she could not have been more gracious, welcoming and helpful through our whole process from planning to set up to special requests etc. If I could get married again I definitely would because the night was magical and spectacular. If you are lucky enough to have your wedding here you will not be disappointed. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants a magical gilded age wedding. You will not be disappointed. read more

Warning: Watch your valuables! Use the in-room safes if you are staying here. Most of our suites and rooms were rifled through while we attended wedding-related events in May 2013. A police report was filed for the cash that was stolen. However, we did not file about the small items that were stolen from the various suites and wedding venues (some faux furs that were used as props, a silk tie, cash from ladies' purses, a toiletries bag from a packed suitcase in their manned luggage room). Yes, the Met Club's public spaces are beautiful, and I would recommend it for a wedding ceremony (with the caveat that you should watch your valuables at all times). However, I do not recommend staying there. My family has traveled extensively in the US and around the world and has never encountered employees that are this unprofessional and indifferent; some were overtly rude. Because we are polite, American-born, working professionals, the only explanations I could think of is that we are not Club members or that we are not white. FYI, the fitness room is for men only; women are not allowed. read more

The event I attended and did not pay for was $250 a head. It is safe to say I would not have ever paid that much for a dinner. But it was special event and the fancy gold and velvet atmosphere proved to be successful for it. The wine flowed freely (as it should for $250) and the desert was my favorite part with three different components: truffles, chocolate and the main desert, which was a pear torte.
