The smokiness of the eggplant shines through and the yoghurt gives it a tangy creamy coolness. Slip in a cheeky mint leaf and the world is good. The koobideh was massive on flavour and portion - so big it could feed a family of four or a hungry me. Tender juicy lamb and buttery fragrant rice. Sweet juicy chargrilled tomato and chilli to give it a kick. Ghormeh sabzi. Beautifully tender lamb pieces and beans. Fragrant herbs spices and dried lime. Massive pile of rice. Over the last few years though things have started to change for the better and Jaam-e-Jam is the latest shimering oasis in Hornsby's cultural dessert. They have been open a few months now and serve really amazing Persian food. For those of you who (like me, up until last night) has never eaten Persian, it's similar to Lebanese/Turkish/etc but at the same time, quite different. And it tastes amazing. Kebabs are a big part of the menu and we had the Jaam-e-Jam special which was a mix of minced lamb, lamb fillet and chicken kebabs, all beautifully cooked. We also had a chicken stew in a pomegranate and walnut sauce that was absolutely fantastic and a braised lamb shank served with broad beans, rice and dill. Fantastic. Everything is served with buttery saffron rice and bread. They also serve traditional Persian drinks - rockmelon juice with ice and sugar, carrot juice with ice cream (yep) or Doogh, a traditional spiced yogurt drink that's sweet, sour and salty all at once. Desserts included saffron and rosewater ice cream (available to take home from the Persian supermarket next door), traditional Persian sweets and some chilled rice noodles in rosewater syrup served with lime juice. Not your ordinary, everyday dessert selection and all fantastic. The service was fast and friendly. As first timers they advised us on how much to order (and got it spot on) and the prices are very reasonable. Well worth a visit. They also do breakfast and lunch. Some of the Persian breakfasts might even tempt us out of bed on a weekend morning...

The place is not very big (although there is a second floor which I don't know if they use or not), but had no problem getting seated and ordering the food. The waiting time was a little long, but that was due to a massive order being taken for takeaway just before we got in. The chef came out halfway through to apologise to us, which was nice. We didn't mind as we were in no rush and were enjoying ourselves anyway. But then it came! The meal I was looking for, a big sharing Chelo Kabab which was very tasty and fulfilling. In some genius usage of a disused servo, this bakery is an oasis in basically the middle of nowhere 'burbsville. One of those magical stores that just sells a bit of everything, but the smell of zaatar as you walk through the car space bit at the front *should* guarantee a visit to the bakery section. And there you will find $2 oregano leb bread pizzas, amazing melt-in-your mouth haloumi pastries (which I did try) and a variety of delicious Lebanese-type food stuffs. I didn't make it into the grocery bit but I bet it's awesome. I didn't try the coffee but I bet it's awesome. This is the kind of place you can just tell they do everything awesome. And cheap! They seem to sell plants & flowers as well and I saw a woman walk in with a bunch of dry-cleaning. Bit of an all-purpose all-round wonderfully scented magical fairyland plonked down on D-Town.

Other than that, the food is impeccable, it's one of my favourite restaurants!
