I wanted to try their tacos (chicken, steak and campechano) and ordered 3. There was ample seating so I decided to eat in. Yall....there was a big bone in one of my tacos. I'm happy I saw it before I bit down on it. When I told the cashier and showed her, she told the cooks. They proceeded to laugh, while I was standing there. How rude, I thought! The cashier offered to prepare me another one but I declined. I didn't want anything else they cooked. The buffet was not very tidy but I didn't eat from there so , meh. The store part was actually pretty cool. I didn't buy anything as I only ventured over there for the food. There's a little sweet shop in the front that sells goodies along with street corn and elote. I ordered the street corn and it was delicious and inexpensive. I love having this grocery store nearby. In addition to your traditional grocery items they also sell fresh fruits, breads, and meals. I like to get my fruits here since they're often fresher than Walmart's options. They also have good deals on meats and you can go right up to the counter and have them bag stuff up for you. That's a big deal for me since cooking for one can be a struggle portion wise. Though busy, the store has always been clean when I visit and the staff is also helpful. read more

Hubs and I popped in here for some fresh produce and a treat. I will now be doing most of my shopping here! The quality of fruits and veggies is super high and it's super affordable. Fresh herbs, spices, and tons of hot peppers! We enjoyed meandering through the bakery and trying not to buy everything (I will return for a cinnamon roll). I absolutely love the visit to stores like this. It is a true cultural experience that I have enjoyed coming to many times in the past. But I guess I just haven't written a review for it yet. My favorite part of international stores like this: the meat section. I always feel like there are so many options that I have not explored. They did not have it on this visit, but the last time I was here, they had whole pig heads. And as a person with deep roots in south Louisiana, I love a good head cheese (not that I would make it myself). But having that option is something out of the ordinary in Birmingham. I truly enjoy exploring the multitude of products that I didn't even know existed. And as a food person, it makes me want to educate myself more on the things I am missing out on. I am not a huge sweets person. But the panaderia is so extensive and really looks quite tasty. When we lived over this way, I would come and get jalapenos for recipes because they had the most extensive selection. This allowed me to pick the best ones I could find. But the entire produce section is very well supplied in general. I highly recommend checking it out! I have yet to eat in the restaurant in the back. But it is on my list of things to do. Going down hill alittle. Not as good as it used to be. This location anyway. Meat department has quite a stench now. People have been getting sick from the buffet and snack counter. Just a red flag. Not as trustworthy as it looks. As with most everything nowadays.... don't just grab it off the shelf and stick it in your mouth.... check dates, packaging, when you get it home, atleast pay attention to smell and color before you throw it in a pan. read more

I'm so into Mi Pueblo that it's just ridiculous. Yes, it's just a grocery store but it's FULL of ingredients that you just can't find anywhere else. Where else can you get a bag of cactus or a whole cow's head? AN ENTIRE COW'S HEAD!!! I love going in and checking out the produce. It's super fresh and they have some of the best prices in town, no sale needed. I also like to look over the spices and see what I can use and stop by the meat department for some fresh chorizo or round pork. I also like to grab a bunch of grapefruit sodas and a bag or two of their tortilla chips. It's all just so good! Although I've never been to either they have a sweets counter upfront and a restaurant in the back with a hot bar. They also have a very cool bakery that charges you by the lb for food. It's wild to see all of their treats spread throughout the cupboards in the wall. read more

The place is huge, clean, and well stocked. I went here today with a Caribbean island native who is a good friend. I was impressed by the store offerings, the size, and and cleanliness. It is obviously targeted at a Latino clientele and Spanish is the first language here. But I am a white guy not fluent in Spanish and I felt comfortable and everyone was nice. There were non-Latino locals buying there groceries while there and prices on ordinary items an Alabamian would buy at any grocery store seemed average and comparable. Some of the meats and fish seemed prices better. While there my friend and I ate lunch in the cafe portion in the back- fried whole fish with Mexican beans and a little side salad. I live on the other side of town so I don't get to come here much. When I do, it's not for weekly shopping, but for my personal "fix". You see, I'm a churro junkie. I have been for half my life. I crave that amazing dough with a sweet inside, fried to perfection and then rolled in sugar. I can't get enough. Mi Pueblo has a bakery with lots of great pastries and breads, but I always grab a handful of churros. I've tried most of their other baked goods, and they are great, too. While I'm there, I spend about an hour walking up and down the isles looking at their meats, produce, and other international goods. I will pick up some great items I can't find elsewhere and take them home to the kids or bring them to my office. I also love their restaurant in the back. They have great tacos and quesadillas. You can add your own toppings for whatever taste you're going for. Always great and the staff are always kind and helpful. What looks like just an ordinary grocery store is so much more. I love a great grocery store and Mi Pueblo Supermarket fits the bill perfectly. Upon first walking in you'll notice that it is well organized with spacious aisles and neat shelves... this makes it easy to find a specific item or to browse for new/interesting things. I'm more of a grocery-store perimeter kind of girl and this place's produce/fruit/meat sections are off the chain... seriously. The fruit/veggie area is massive, intuitively laid out and filled with old favorites and new options. A welcome find was the banana selection which is robust with at least 5-7 varieties of bananas/plantains outside of the bland cavendish variety found ubiquitously in big-box grocery stores. I picked up a huge bunch of red bananas which were $0.99/lb and heavenly tasting. I also found ripe papaya, guava, and mangos (2 for $1). (Can you tell my spirit animal is a fruit bat?) The veggie selection was equally impressive with well-priced beets, peppers, cacti and other, more typical, staples. Next, I wondered back to the meat section and was delighted to find an enormous variety of typical and atypical cuts of beef, chicken, quail, duck, pork, lamb and goat. The seafood section was a tad smaller but very popular so I didn't manage to get a complete inventory. I'll definitely be returning to their meat counter to pick up some quail and duck the next time I entertain. Aside from the impressive fresh selections, there was also a huge pastry bar, smoothie counter, and handmade tortilla counter. I didn't venture too far into the dry goods area but it was HUGE and undoubtedly holds all kinds of fun treasures. If you are looking to mix-up your normal grocery routine, are an adventurous eater or are looking for xyz item that you haven't seen since your last vacation to somewhere exotic, this place should be on your radar. I could seriously spend hours in Mi Pueblo! Not only do they have very inexpensive produce, they have a wide variety of meats and a fantastic bakery. The meat department was by far the most intriguing. You'll find your every day cuts of chicken, beef,and seafood, but throw in chicken feet, frozen cow heads, massive pork rinds, etc. I really enjoyed walking around and just looking at everything...it's definitely not your run-of-the-mill meat department! There's also a great little restaurant to the left of the meat department. Very inexpensive and very authentic. I suggest ordering the tacos or the eggs al gusto. Nothing that I've tried there has been too spicy, but they have a little station with cilantro, onions, salsa and hot sauce in case you want to doctor yours up. Mi Pueblo is a great grocery store and a great place to get a taste (literally and figuratively) of other cultures. Definitely go check it out! read more

I've now been to the buffet about 4 times and feel that it really is my best option if I don't have my mind set on anything. While it would be nice if it were labeled, it's a buffet so just try a bit of everything first and go from there. If ordering from the menu board, do yourself a favor and get a pupusa and a ceviche tostada. I still need to try the whole fish which looked great on a table and on Derek's picture. Also don't forget to try the panaderia. Some pastry items are hit (bread pudding, churros) while some are misses (the croissants are a bit dry) but well worth it for $.90 to $1.25 each. read more

I found you! On my last Birmingham trip, I drove to an empty lot in where Mi Pueblo should have been. The Yelp page didn't seem to indicate of any hints of a business being closed down, so I figured one day I will find this place. The Mi Pueblo in San Jose, California had always cooked the most amazing marinated pork I've ever had in my life that no other Mexican restaurant could compare so of course the first and only thing I went to was the al pastor. It tastes differently from the pastor in California, but $3 for 1 pound fed me for 3 meals. The service is good wherever you are. Although this may be an odd way to describe this Mi Pueblo, it was both clean and run down. It's not as colorful as the locations in California. I've not tried the buffet yet, but I love coming here for the produce section and the pastries. The produce section is awesome! FRESH and colorful. Yes, this is a Mexican grocery store and most items and signs are in Spanish. However, you won't feel uncomfortable if you don't speak Spanish. You will figure it all out pretty fast. Chocolate is chocolate and cheese is cheese! LOL! Everyone is really friendly and helpful. The pastry section has all sorts of goodies you probably won't find at any other grocery store bakery and you can mix and match. I also love coming here for different types of hot sauces, spices and peppers. You certainly will find something you like here and you will probably end up trying something different. It's probably the cleanest grocery store I've been in...including Publix. The next time I'm in there I'll take a few pics. read more

This is a super fascinating experience. They got basically any food you would ever want to prepare based on Latin style. They got some different restaurant options inside to eat at. It is a fully immersive experience that I love, and will certainly come back to visit to try out more of the restaurant food some day. Get some platanitos. We stopped in to try the new, larger Mi Pueblo in Homewood having visited the Pelham one months ago. We love having access to so many unique fruits, products from various countries and in house taco stand. I found panela (Colombia), yerba mate (Argentina), and ended up bringing home frozen yuca ($1.50) and frozen tostones/fried plantains ($2.00). We got some tacos and tamales to go. Recommend the asada and al pastor. Chicken didn't have tons of flavor in the tacos but was delicious in the tamales. Bring your Spanish dictionary or brush up on what you want to order before stepping to the counter. Some staff doesn't speak English but are all very welcoming! I'm honestly a bit surprised by all the stellar reviews for the eatery in this supermarket. Don't get me wrong, the store itself is amazing; it is by far the best Latin market that I've been to in the south. They have a fantastic selection of products, including a wall of deliciously fresh pan dulce. When it comes to food, however, I wasn't really impressed. I ordered the tamales and they were only lukewarm and the centers were cold. My boyfriend got food from the buffet and though it wasn't quite hot he did enjoy it and said that it was flavorful. We did come a bit late so I might try again during lunch to see if the food is a bit fresher. Also note that if you speak no Spanish it may be hard to order as most everyone who we encountered here spoke minimal English. read more

I definitely will say you have to have the onion/jalapeño/tomato salsa mix on them to make them perfectly moist and so flavorful. They make their tortillas in house and are very tender and fresh. A fun experience to walk into the store you definitely do not feel like you are in the middle of Birmingham. Prior to this store there was a Food World in this location. The people were friendly, but the lot was always empty. Since Mi Pueblo took over, they completely changed the way a grocery store is run, and the parking lot is always full now. Now before I you go in, this is a Mexican Supermarket, NOT a Publix. The store caters to the Latin community and actually does a great job at it. What surprised me about this location is that they also have a mini restaurant inside this store.
