Since our luck kinda sucked last year, my friend and I were determined to come & pray for 2019. It's a small temple but you can spot it easily on Glisan street. There's a small parking lot in the front, and a more spacious one in the back. Though it is small, it has everything: the goddess status, the front burner, the praying room, the eating hall, and a fortune reader & monks. We took some incense, fired them up and placed 2 in front of each goodness and in the big burner. You usually pray for good health/fortune after telling the goddess your name and where you live. The temple provided some vegetarian food, but it went out when we got there... (hopefully our bad luck stopped there) FYI: since my guardian goddess is 關公。 I was surprised to see it here. I guess I'll be back every time I need him to look over me!

Following the service, there is lunch served that is always vegetarian. The people here are mostly mandarin speaking, but there are usually people present that speak wither Vietnamese or English. The chanting is in mandarin but there are booklets that have English pronunciation of the Chinese characters so you can follow along. This place is cherished in my heart and I am happy to give this place 5-stars because the community and service here is wonderful.

I get the strangest feeling that I've been here before…read more.. Old church building repurposed to be a new church building. Starbucks color scheme. Coffee in the lobby. Candles on the stage. An intentionally diverse praise team earnestly trying to get people to worship in the twenty-two minutes of time allotted. A younger pastor with a casual style and cool hair. A name (and logo!) that is deep, meaningful, artistic, and used by similar churches across the country. Mosaic Portland is a casual meeting of believers in in the city's Hollywood district (Northwest). Lots of families. If you're looking for a laid-back church experience, Mosaic would be a good choice. They have lots of programs (they might not call them that, but...) where they get involved in community outreach and service. We visited on a Sunday morning in late summer. We dropped the kids off at the childcare station in the basement, and headed up to the worship center. Nobody really talked to us, but they didn't really ignore us, either. I know church isn't supposed to be about "what's in it for me," but an attractional model of church kind of sets itself up for that. The service was nice- it moved along at a nice pace and kept our attention pretty naturally. The preacher (one of Mosaic's pastors) was approachable and demonstrated that he's a great storyteller. He seems like the kind of guy I'd like to get to know and hang out with. He also seems like the kind of guy I won't ever get to know unless I become a regular at Mosaic. The church seems to be growing- they're looking at buying more space in a building across the street. I just wish they didn't look like hundreds of others churches across the country. Portland is unique- people here are different. It would be nice to see a church like Mosaic that didn't require a conversion to contemporary American Christian culture in order to belong. Worship times: Sundays at 9:30am, 11:15am and (in a bold retro move) 5:30pm. Sunday morning mass at 8am in Portland, Oregon…read more.. St. Ignatius Catholic Church was close to our Airbnb. It had a free parking lot and great reviews. Father Chris was friendly and welcoming. The interior of the church was beautiful, as was the outside. The music was exceptional. The lead singer (what a voice!) played the Grand Piano while a violinist accompanied him. This is our 4th Spaghetti Dinner at this church!…read more Lunch opens at exactly Noon. As soon as you are seated, the waiter brings you water, bread & salad for two. Your plate comes with 3 meatballs, 8 raviolis, and 3/4th of spaghetti and meat sauce. Comparing this meat sauce to the last Pastini spaghetti take-out, this is by far more moister and has more sauce. They will ask if you need more bread, salad, and when you're done, they give you a single serving of ice cream, usually with a swirl of strawberry or chocolate. Why the 1 star negative? The salad has very little dressing. Last year, I asked for additional dressing, but because I was almost done with mine, I just ignored it. Also, their numbering method: Larger groups first, instead of being given a number of First Come First Served. Which is OK by me, but there were children that needed to be fed first, that were there before us, and we were two of the last ones to show up and because the rest were waiting for their call, the person in charge just keep mumbling: "OK, who is next?" So, we got in, because no one else was in line, everyone's sitting down waiting to be 'called'. It is a great place to get a delicious & filling lunch for a low price: $10 for seniors each.

Those were the words that Josh the pastor said to us from ON STAGE in front of everyone during his sermon as my wife and I were trying to calm down our crying baby (go watch the livestream - it's recorded). Our daughter was crying for about 5-10 seconds and we were trying to figure out how to get out from the middle of our pew to take her outside, but Josh's comment was completely embarrassing and unacceptable. Jesus said "let the children come to me." Door of Hope said "your kids are too much". Very unfortunate.

Pastor Tyler Staton delivered a heartfelt, impactful message, and the service ended with an invitation for anyone who needed prayer or felt led by the Holy Spirit. It was sincere and spirit-filled. They've thought about every detail for comfort and community. There's a cozy mother's/nursing lounge, free coffee, and even a small bookstore. The people are friendly and genuinely welcoming. I also loved that they bless the children before they head to the Sunday School--it's a meaningful touch. You can really sense the Holy Spirit here. Their mission is clear: to be with Jesus, become like Jesus, and do what He did. I would absolutely recommend this church to anyone looking for a loving, Jesus-centered community in Portland.

As much as their branding is inclusive, if you are any amount of queer sympathetic (believing they are God loved) this community will try to convince you those are quiet inside thoughts & sinful ones at that. If you are queer & progressive this is NOT the church for you.
