Although I cannot declare myself as someone who is devoted to practicing Buddhism, I certainly believe the traditions and spiritual practices. We were welcomed by monks upon arrival and while both spoke limited English -- they gladly provided a quick tour of the temple before allowing us to walk around on our own. The photos do not provide any justice to the temple. The grand room in the back of the house is so stunning with vaulted ceilings with gold plaques of other Buddhas covering the walls. There are small scriptures places by some of the Buddha statues to help provide visitors some context to the role the Buddha holds. One of my friends purchased a candle ($30) and wrote her entire family's names on a red piece of paper to stick on to the candle. She lit the candle and walked it to the Buddha in the back room and prayed -- asking if blessings, good health, and good luck would be granted for her entire family. This was a recommendation from one of the monks so she walked my friend through the entire process. It was pretty cool to shadow her and learn more about the power of prayer. Masks are required while inside but please do yourself a favor -- make a trip out there to find some time to meditate, pray, or to just simply learn more about Buddhism. I liked it better than the one in SE. it's small and cozy, staff were friendly and very relaxed. I got to pray to all god I came to see, and I walked away lighting two candles for spirtual guiding (光明燈) for myself and ones I love. That's all I want and need! So this is how you do it: - Enter the hall and grab a few incense (like 5). - light them up by the candle area. Wave it back and forward to put out the fire when all are lit. - walk to the main hall and talk to the goddess/Buddha. Then put one incense in the main burner. If you'd like, you can contribute some money in the donation box. - walk behind the wall and you'll see god of mercy 觀音. Go pray and put one incense in the burner. - walk back to the entrance. Pray to earth and put 3 insence in the big burner. - now you can walk all the way back to the main hall. You'll have to take off your shoes, and you can't bring the incense. So just pray wIth your hands, palms close. Also, you can find your fortune by picking a bamboo stick with its matching paper card. That's it and there's nothing to it. Life is hard. Everyone experiences strife in their lives. You need to be able to be at peace with yourself and come to terms with various situations. I've heard a lot about meditation over the years and decided to give it a try. I took a class through PCC and learned a lot about meditation and Buddhist teachings. The class I took was a 5 or 6 week course taught by Heather Rocklin (she's fantastic). Don't get me wrong, there were plenty of times where I fell asleep during meditation and I felt bored out of my mind, but you have to know that MEDITATION IS HARD. REALLY HARD. Really hard to get into and really hard to stick to, but the benefits of meditation are amazing. I'm not at the point where meditation is strictly a part of my routine, but I can already feel the emotional and mental benefits. They have regular services in Vietnamese weekly on Sunday, starting at 10am, follow by the always delicious vegetarian three courses meal at 12pm FREE for anyone attending. This is a communal meal enjoyed in silence; which what continues to draw me here! The temple is spacious and inviting! Ongoing activities to the left side of the temple are making it more pleasant with beautiful walking paths with logs. I was told by the keeper it will be completed by June 2025. It's well kept both inside and outside. I love walking in the courtyard and the surrounding areas before and after the service and the silence communal meal. Its lovely and convenient location provides a relaxing atmosphere for contemplating and rejuvenating from the daily hustle. Plenty of parking in its own lot. Come check them out on Sundays. We spoke practices, life, and love of soccer as he showed me all of the grounds and future work to come. after staying for about an hour I left with more knowledge and perspective, feeling refreshed after a long trip. Master Kevin has put much work into this temple and it shows. it's a beautiful place and he has a continuos smile that resonates happiness. I'll be stopping here every time I pass Portland. It mainly focuses on the pureland belief as well as the precepts of Buddha. The community is very welcoming and warm. They are interested in welcoming all people from every walk of life. Wether you are straight or GLBTQ. If you are of any ethnic origin, they believe that you are a welcome body to the Sangha and are glad you are there. It is important to no that etiquette in any place is important and that is true here as well. Be respect the community by asking questions at appropriate times and refrain from speaking during service. While this temple does not follow traditions of taking your shoes off at the door. It is custom to bow upon entering and exiting. You don't have to be a practitioner to follow this general requests. After the service all are welcome to join a coffee and tea gathering downstairs to hear more discussion about the Dharma and Buddha. All are welcome. Through the year many festivals are held, including Obon and Hanamatsuri.
