Conventional psychotherapy works with the conscious mind - the portion of the iceberg that's above water. Hypnotherapy works with both, but mostly the stuff underneath. Carol's therapy always starts above water with a discussion about problems and goals - the stuff that your conscious mind can relate. Then, maybe that same session or a different session, she gets to work on those goals with hypnosis. The hypnosis is a LOT like the meditation portion of yoga. There's relaxing music, your eyes are closed, and Carol talks in a soothing voice. Sometimes it starts with a guided journey in a sunlit forest with a stream and other times it doesn't. She always talks about the things you want to accomplish. Sometimes I pay attention and sometimes my mind drifts and I don't listen. She says that okay because my unconscious mind can still hear her. I must admit that my goals for hypnotherapy don't have obvious results; however, I believe that it's still beneficial. If anything, Carol is still a licensed social worker and the talk therapy is nice. I always leave feeling better. I have also seen incredible results in others. Their goals were much more concrete such as quitting smoking or controlling anger. Hypnotherapy has nothing to do with the idiotic shows where someone waves a pocket watch in front of your face and makes you act foolishly. After all, IPA is a credible practice that works with insurance carriers.

Our therapist Steve Thorpe suggested she take a class at the Wright Institute or Wright Foundation which if you look up online is considered a cult by many. I believe they brainwashed my wife and she has become a very emotionally unstable person since. She makes horrible decisions and looks at me like I'm the cause of it all. I sat through months of couples therapy where the focus was on my wife and her problems with her business partner. Why was I paying for couples therapy and my therapist wasnt focusing on us the couple? I was and still am a super supportive husband but unfortunately my wife has now filed for divorce. My life has been turned upside down and my children ar going through this as well. I cant stand him or this place for that. I believe it could have all been prevented if we had been assigned a competent marriage counselor. On a side note, I see another therapist with this group who is wonderful and helps me cope with the divorce. I wish our marriage therapist would have been as good and would have focused on us the couple rather than other issues. I am not a fan of Steve and I will never forgive this place or him for solidifying the loss of the love of my life. It's really sad that they took money from us for all that time and the result was Divorce. OK, how often does one get a chance to speak candidly, and this PUBLICLY, about their shrink?…read more I've made calculations, and I'm pretty sure Dr. Ciganek has been my psychiatrist for just over 16 years. I wouldn't want to embarrass this truly gentle man, but I've not had a more caring, attentive and knowledgeable psychiatrist, or any one physician I've seen over any extended period of time. So .... forgive me if I seem a bit smitten, or like a know-it-all. I realize Dr. Ciganic has all kinds of people as patients, with a spectrum and variety of medical situations I would know little to nothing about. As Darkling S. expresses well, and so succinctly, Dr. Ciganek treats the whole person, and considers all aspects of your mental, emotional and physical being in the world. I've only seen Ciganek for prescribing medication and its management; I know he also works with patients as a psychotherapist. I've been in group therapy, individual psychotherapy or counseling with psychologists or social workers I've chosen since I've been under Ciganek's care, and he has worked in tandem with them, when necessary. I used to imagine that only when and if I had a grave, potentially terminal illness would I ever be seeing a top specialist in the Chicago Metro area. Even then, I'd want to interview several of them carefully, with a loved one beside me to help me decide. And though it's true you might feel, due to the personal nature of the specialty, that having a good rapport, and feeling understood by your psychiatrist would be more important than their standing among most peers and patients alike, I have had the good fortune to find both a top specialist in his field, and a psychiatrist who understands me as well as Ciganik does. I've recently faced a complex family crisis, and Dr. Ciganek, right away, recommended I seek psychotherapy. I'm grateful, now, for the insight he had, then -- knowing I needed more than medication at this time, when I'd assumed otherwise. Along with his useful intuition, Ciganek is open-minded and flexible when it comes to considering my quirks and sometimes stubborn need or decision to do things my own way, though he requires we stay in close communication about such agreements, and he's this accessible and dependable in my life. Dr. Ciganek has possibly been the most valuable source of my broader education on how to take the best care of myself I can. Along with being ahead of the curve in the most recent psycho-pharmacology research -- which he obviously considers and advises patients on, wherever applicable -- he is the same when it comes to research on human health likely to affect his patients. This has assured me for a long while that Ciganek's practice is not at all about being a pusher for the pharmaceutical industry. He's an independent professional, and respects my independence. That being said, he has finally gotten through to me on the things I've always been most disinclined towards, like the importance of keeping a regular schedule -- and how sleep is an especially critical aspect of this, affecting everything about a person's life. ONE EXAMPLE: this doctor -- my psychiatrist -- not my internist, and not the nutritionist I saw for six months, told me about the lack of sleep affecting weight, and that was eight years ago, long before studies only recently in the news showing sleep loss can actually lead to gaining weight. Ciganek also knew long before I did that sleep apnea was probably one of the factors behind my problem with fatigue -- that it was not ALL due to my sleep disorder. Then, about three years ago, I began waking up with horrible, horrible headaches most mornings, which it would take a few hours to shake off -- and I've never been one to suffer headaches. I was even more upset to learn, then, that these headaches were due to a nightly loss of oxygen! So FINALLY, after maybe twelve years or so of my insistent conviction that the use of a mask and loud noise of a C-PAP machine couldn't possibly be tolerable, it has more or less become so. (I should have listened to my doctor ....) FINALLY: I recently read that many people don't realize patients suffering from chronic pain -- caused by all kinds of conditions -- and people in clinical pain management programs, are often treated with, and benefit from, the skilled use of medications -- such as anti-depressants, anti-seizures, and others -- involving the brain's chemistry. (You're not imagining it, but it IS in your brain!) Dr. Ciganek has continued to surprise and impress me with this and many other aspects involved in appreciating all that a great psychiatrist can do.

He's completely different.. And that's why I've been with him for years now. Dr. Lynch looked me in the eye, asked questions in the least judgmental way, not only heard, but listened, to my responses. He cares, and it shows. I had been an addict in recovery with a prior relapse and good amount of sober time before that, so I was familiar with certain drugs and therapies that other Dr's had tried. He actually let me plan my own treatment.. With his guidance and input, of course. He listens, he cares, and he helps tailor treatment plans to your specific needs, requirments, based on your input and prior experiences. For the hopeless opiate addicts out there trying to quit using, first I'm so sorry, I know what your going through. I've tried to quit cold turkey many times, only to find myself feeling defeated and lacking will power when after days and days of every muscle and bone aching, nausea, inability to eat or good food down, even hydrating was difficult, restless and twitching legs, headaches, funny nose, insomnia, watery eyes. Oh yes, I remember and my heart is with you. Now as someone living a normal life I feel it is my responsibility to share what saved my life. I came out of detox and long term treatment and headed to the city for sober living. After all that clean time, you would think that I wouldn't mess it up. And yet, the whole drive out to the city to register at the half way home all I could think about was scoring. "Luckily" for me there was a problem with registration and I needed to have a prescription for Suboxone before being admitted but no Dr would see me for along time. So, I pick up my bags with no further plans than going to find dope (because my body was still so off and the cravings were still hypnotic) I hadn't felt right in my mind or body since I last used, over 3 months.. On my way to score, Dr Lynch called and told me to come on in that we would get everything sorted out for sober living. On no notice at all, he prioritized me and my situation right away, not even knowing I was steps from a relaps. I had friends that have used suboxone with great success but if course didn't think it would work for me. Opiate addicts!!!! It works!!!!! The most selfish thing that I could do is not scream it from the rooftops! If it were not for Dr. Lynch and the way he practices medicine and actually cares about his patients, I don't know where I'd be. I thought I was one of those people that could never feel good enough in body and mind to have a normal life again, without using drugs. Suboxone also has a generic now and every day sober is a blessing. Cravings were instantly cut by at least 85% right away, which was enough for me to put in the last bit of work. Body pains, 90%+ gone, comfort of knowing that I couldn't use (or it wouldn't work if I tried) was such a relief, and a sense of calm in my mind, like a normal human being, without the high feeling. I checked into my sober house, continued seeing Dr. Lynch and going to meetings, got a job, paid taxes!! Felt good to have support and finally be stable again in my life and Dr. Lynch played a huge role, he is a great Dr. I'm clean 4+ years now, moved , suburbs and have a rewarding life, still seeing him of coarse.
