My Tuesday March 19 began like any other day for a Management Consultant, filled with virtual meetings, client reports, and business calls. But that day, something extraordinary happened, a lady ran through a red light, causing significant damage to my entire front end and to the car next to mine. Thankfully, no one was hurt. Immediately following the accident, I contacted my insurance agent, Michael Grant, with State Farm on Kings Drive, to inform him of the situation. Remarkably, Michael answered my call on the first ring. He walked me through what to do including taking pictures, jotting down details, getting names of any witnesses and calling the police. Always call the police- Always. He stayed on the phone with me until the tow truck came because i was still a little disoriented from the hit to my car. This is without a doubt the most poorly run and unethical insurance office I have ever had to misery of dealing with in my entire life. I have been a loyal State Farm customer for more than 15 years (my parents have been with State Farm for more than 35 years), my previous agent in Northern Virginia was incredible and so when I moved to Charlotte in 2010, I wanted to stay with SF -- which lead me to Michael Grant's office in Dilworth. When I tried to move my policy from VA to NC, Mr. Grant's office let me know that my rate would not just be doubling, it would be TRIPLING from what it was previously in VA. I was given a laundry list of the reasons why this was happening (additional uninsured motorist covered 'required' by NC was one of them), as I am not an expert on the subject, I took their word for it. After I got settled and started talking to a few more CLT locals, I realized that I was being taken advantage of -- when I called back to cancel my insurance, magically my rate was able to drop down to relatively the same amount that I had been paying in VA and I was still able to have the same coverage. Fast forward to a few months ago when my coverage lapsed because of a billing issue with the office - when the DMV let me know that I was going to have to pay a bunch of fees - again MAGICALLY State Farm was able to provide them with the correct forms and fix my payment problem. However the real problem with their system is that they are lazy - my old agent allowed you to make multiple payment during your insurance term and would mail you a reminder. Mr. Grant's office simply allows the system to kick out another bill as soon as you make a partial payment so if you forget, there isn't anyone that is going to remind you to do anything. The kicker to all of this is that I was in a terrible car accident a few weeks ago and immediately called Mr. Grant's office - you know what they did? They told me to call a 'Claims' hotline and report it. That's right - now State Farm agents don't even have to deal with your accident claims. Well I had some issues with the claims hotline so I tried to call the office back - you will NEVER get a live person on the phone. You will have to leave a message - when I was finally called back, a woman representative from the office got into a heated argument with me and I finally gave up and told her that she would be hearing from my attorney. Well my attorney tried to call the office DOZENS of times and they would screen his call, not pick up the phone, and never called him back. Last and certainly not least is the fact that I HAVE NEVER SPOKEN TO MICHAEL GRANT. That's right Yelp - this man has happily taken my payments and my business while treating me like garbage for the last four years and I haven't ever heard his voice. STAY AWAY FROM THIS OFFICE. Get yourself some reliable and trustworthy insurance from someone that actually values your business and at least to some degree has your best interest in mind (p.s. when you find that insurance will you please let me know?! haha). read more

Wow-I just stumbled across the previous review and I had an eerily similar experience. When I transferred my policies from NM to this office in NC, my policy premium went from $65 to around $180 a month. I too trusted their reasoning because I'm young and dumb, whatever. After I got everything set up with them, I started getting surcharges added to my bill making it closer to $250 each month. When I went in to inquire, the man was very condescending and told me that this was money due from the NM policy...which is not true because the policy was fully paid up in NM before I transferred it. That was too fishy for me. I switched to progressive and just like that, the money I would pay for a month and a half of insurance out of this office covered an entire 6 month policy. read more

After submitting paperwork for an insurance policy matter well in advance of taking a vacation and receiving written confirmation from Michael Grant that he had received the document via mail, I was still interrupted during my honeymoon. I had to stop what I was doing in the middle of Disney World to address the issue, but Michael and his staff had no interest in providing any help. The employee who answered the phone (Brittany) was rude, unprofessional, and completely disinterested in resolving the issue so I could resume my vacation. She didn't even know if they keep copies of paperwork on file in their office, which is pretty pathetic when you really consider what that means. "You'll have to call back later," she told me after I'd explained I was in a crowded theme park. When I did call back after Michael was actually in his office, he had her send me straight to voicemail. If you don't have any issues, you won't even notice Michael exists other than when he sends an impersonal birthday card once a year. If you do have an issue, though, Michael won't care, and his employees certainly won't care. When they drop the ball, you'll get indifference and excuses rather than accountability and effort. You're better off just calling State Farm's customer service number, so what purpose does Michael Grant even serve? None. He's useless, and you're better off just getting your quotes online and making your own decisions about insurance without someone trying to leech a commission out of you. read more
