Very unpleasant experience at Paris Photo with the owner and director. My collection focuses on Japanese artists and they represent several, so their booth was on my list. I got there after spending almost two hours seeing other work at this very crowded fair. Parched, I helped myself to one of the tangerines in a big bowl on the table. Other exhibitors welcomed visitors with post cards, chocolates, North African pastries, even posters. The admission ticket was 30 euros, to weed out non-serious buyers. The owner commanded me to put back the tangerine which was for "his clients". How did he know my budget? To underscore his pettiness, his gallery director rudely told me to "run along, sell my paintings and come back TO TRY TO BUY something, not that they'd sell to (me)". They'd do better with a bowl of artificial fruit. I'll continue buying from Maeght and Tattinger. read more

My favorite private gallery in the city. Gorgeous collections of classic photographs (think Cartier Bresson, Lartigue, Doisneau) and great shows from up-and-coming photographers, beautifully created. The staff are extremely friendly and knowledgeable, and openings are always a blast. read more

I went to the exhibit of Ishiuchi Miyako photographs of Frida Kahlo's wardrobe and personal belongings, it was lovely. Nicely curated, with photos on both levels. Unfortunately, their book on the exhibit was sold out, although they did have prints signed by the photographer available for sale. read more

Established in 1993.

The Michael Hoppen Gallery is wholly devoted to the photographic image as art. The gallery opened in Chelsea on October 1st 1993 and has become a formidable presence in the international photography community. The Michael Hoppen Gallery's main goal is to encourage the love, appreciation, and collecting of the photograph.

Meet the Business Owner: Michael H.

Michael Hoppen, born in South Africa, has been interested in photography since the age of 8.Educated in the UK since arriving in 1961, Michael attained a BA honors in photography film and television in 1980 at the LCC, and then a year at the Royal College of Art in London. Michael then ran his own studio as a commercial photographer which he closed in 1991. The Michael Hoppen Gallery opened in 1992 and then Shine Gallery (Michael Hoppen Contemporary) opened in 2000. Both galleries are committed to photography in all its guises and we hold regular exhibitions in 19th, 20th and 21st C photography. A third gallery was added in 2004 on the ground floor enabling a much wider choice of photography to be exhibited. The Michael Hoppen Gallery also exhibits in New York, Basel, Hong Kong, Tokyo, TEFAF in Holland and ParisPhoto.

I met Dmitry through a friend and within the span of a week, I used his services twice! I kid you not, people were chasing him around the venue asking him to snap a photo! He was absolutely professional and approachable. A few days ago, we met up for a second shoot, this time just me. Dmitry is a pure delight to work with. He's so friendly and carefree and constantly seeking to improve himself. He made sure I felt comfortable with him. Being photographed as a subject can often feel a bit awkward but Dmitry made me feel so at ease. I loved the smile I would see behind his camera each time he got the perfect shot he was looking for! I have yet to see the photos from this shoot, but I have no doubt that they are incredible. We've already planned to do another shoot in a completely different style. Dmitry is so passionate about his work and just a fantastic PERSON overall. If you ever need photographs done, I would highly (15/10) recommend Dmitry!
