I've driven past Gary, IN soooo many times but never stopped to see Michael Jackson's childhood home. On our way back from Indiana Dunes, we decided why not just check it out since it's on our way back to Chicago anyway. I was honestly surprised how many people were there when we came, but maybe it's because of the recent movie. It looks like people bring gifts and sign their names on the sidewalk and street. There's not much else to do besides look at it. It's surrounded by a fence, which is understandable. It's a neat stop if you're on the way to or from something, but probably not something to go out of the way for unless you're a huge fan. The street is on has a few abandoned houses and right behind his house is what looks to be an abandoned high school. People do live in the nearby houses so visitors should all try to be respectful and keep noise down! read more

I was in the area and was surprised to learn that the Jackson 5 house that they grew up in was here. I had to make a stop and visit the hallowed grounds. Note that this is not a museum or a touristy spot. It is an old house in an unassuming neighborhood. It's a quick visit if you are in the area and a fan. read more

Online it said it was a museum ,but when I got there I could only stand outside the gate to view the house. I would have loved to see the inside. The Jackson family should tear down that old house and buy the other 15 houses on that block and tear them down also. They should than build a MICHAEL JACKSON MUSEUM. Give the tourist something to see lifelike figures of the Jackson family, exhibits, give the history of how they got started, show the real clothes they wore, have costumes available to wear during photo shoots, have Michael's music playing all through the museum ,and have a dance floor. Stopped here while on a roadtrip to Minnesota. There isn't much around here to see or do, so it's a quick 5 minute stop. The house now has a fence around it which was not there when Michael Jackson and family were living there. This seemed to be a very poor area and this is probably the nicest house in the area. Most of the stores in the area were closed and boarded up or damaged. There is no entering the house, so it's just a quick drive by/photo op. If you are traveling through or nearby, I guess to say "you've been there" it's worth a stop or if you are a die hard Jackson fan! read more

Yes, I've been a fan from the beginning and not just of Michael - but of the Jackson 5 and Janet. And finally to drive up from Indianapolis - this was our chance!! It's not difficult to get to, at all. We came during the day, just a pro tip for everyone, if you come at around noon, there are a bunch of families and nerds (like me), so it's safe. There are some rude comments from other reviewers, dissing the neighborhood even though they don't live there. That's not right, let's be respectful. Anyway, I immediately wondered how all of the Jacksons fit into the small house while running their dance routines, per their dictatorial dad?? I couldn't see it, maybe they did their routines in the backyard?? Speaking of dance routines - I've spent many summer days in the mirror perfecting The Love you Save, I wanna Rock with you, Let's get Serious (that's Jermaine) and Beat it. I ended up getting closer to Chris Tucker than Michael, but that's alright - I really tried my best but Michael's moves and singing cannot be easily matched. To the city of Gary - you are missing a big business opportunity!! Where is the museum?? Where are the greeters?? Where is the music?? Where are the T-shirts?? Where is the visitors' center?? The is the childhood home of Joe Jackson and his musical children. The house is easy to get to. It is a very small house that is fenced off. There is street parking available and this will definitely be a short stop since all you can do is look at the house from a far. There are a few plaques in the cement, flowers on the sidewalk and a couple of pieces of white poster board with fan signatures. Outside of that, it is just a regular house. I must admit that the house is well kept. It is sad, but the neighborhood that the house is located is not as well maintained and has many vacant or falling apart houses. This is a decent stop if you are a Jackson fan and in the area. I would not make a special trip though. I spent about the total of 5 minutes there. read more

Stopping here was something I've always wanted to do and even though I know you can't go inside, it's kind of like this amazing piece of popular culture well preserved. From Chicago it's about an hour drive. Now, I recommend driving / renting a car. The area/Gary is not the safest area from what I've read in my research and it seemed very run down so it would be a safer trip if you drove. Michael Jackson's home is a gated home that house he, his seven siblings and parents before they moved to LA. Visiting here is a quick trip since you can't go inside but it's a great places to stop and remember someone we all loved for so many years. There is a small memorial there for him. It doesn't do justice to his legacy but it's a great place to start. Any music fan needs to stop here. read more

Visited on my birthday, which also happens to be Michael's death day. This year made 10 years since Michael died so I figured while in Chicago, it was only right to drive down and stop by the Jackson's family home. Since I've been a fan of the Jacksons my whole life, I was honestly very excited about this. When my friend and I arrived, there were people selling paraphernalia and playing Michael's music. This set the tone and made it that much more exciting. Like previously mentioned, there isn't a whole lot to see or do, but just the fact that the Jackson family once stayed here, is awe inspiring. My friend and I decided to take the train from Chicago to visit this attraction. We were a bit disappointed when we arrived because there is no true attraction. It is just a house that was "closing" at sundown. The neighborhood is sketchy and boarded houses lined the street. You can't go inside and there is a gate and window covers with the Jackson family that cover the windows at night. The placard has been removed from the front yard. The home is kept in nice condition but not sure what inside looks like. We weren't impressed with what we saw. We were there for about 20 mins, but some of that time was spent waiting on Lyft to come back. Oh our uber drive told us that the area has a crime rate..highest in the area so be mindful of your surroundings. I will not recommend this to anyone I know. read more

Neat little stop I did years ago on the way to a trip to Chicago while passing through Gary Indiana. Pretty cool to see for any fan of the king of pop. Gary Indiana has a reputation of being a little bit of a rough area and this was in a rougher neighborhood. Definitely no other tourists attractions near here. So I wouldn't necessarily plan for a full day here. It was very soon after his death when we visited. So lots of flowers and memorials. Not sure if things we're restricted because of that. I was born here in Gary, Indiana and Proud of it. Most of the comments I read were pretty fair but I wonder what the city that you grew up in looks like Now. Michael Jackson was the/ Is the King of Pop and the family is Famous be Proud of that. I am sure that the museum part of the whole idea got lost with the number of less honest individuals who ran the city. The marble black monument which was Removed years ago is supposed to be in storage I believe. However, I was impressed when I saw it...it is Beautiful. Joe Jackson worked at what used to be the Largest United States Steel Plant in America (USS-Steel) which is still operating across from the Rail Cats baseball stadium and the tollway/toll road heading into Hammond, Indiana and Chicago, Illinois. Once you visit the 2300 Jackson Street, go to the Hard Rock Casino and spread the wealth with our City; then maybe they can do some repairs to the area. The City of Gary is about as dangerous as any other place with a whole lot of spectators previously living in Chicago who happen to live here now and do to our City what they've done to Chicago. Disrespect it and talking about their Turf and they don't Even own a House . Posi's: well maintained, especially compared to the neighboring houses, close to the Skyway for a quick escape from Gary, nifty sculpture thing and I supports you can call it a landmark maybe? Negs: 10:10 chance of getting shot after dark, 10:10 chance of not seeing that pothole after dark, 10:10 chance of staying less than 7 minutes 24/7. Fairly disappointing. We were traveling from Indianapolis to Chicago and found out Michael Jackson's childhood home was on the way. It was a few blocks off the main highway so we figured why not. First of all this isn't a museum or attraction. This is just a landmark with some memorials for Michael. We visited in November and the main statue I see in pictures was not there. Also it is in a pretty run down neighborhood with collapsed buildings and almost no car traffic. Some people write with a sharpie on the bricks surrounding the house. Michael Jackson was the king of pop and will be missed very much. If you are not a die hard Michael Jackson fan I would say you can definitely skip this. read more

I am a die hard Michael Jackson fan and I braved coming to his house. Unfortunately, it is in a shady area as there was a guy standing in the corner and looking around. I wanted to take a picture but did not take a chance as I thought I am alone and well people know tourist come and might be taken advantage of. I can't help but laugh at the negative reviews here. Oh no! It's in a bad neighborhood! The shock! The horror! Of course it's not in Beverly Hills. . . that's the whole point. To go to this house is to see the incredibly humble beginnings of the Jackson family. To see the tiny (and I do mean tiny) home where nine children were raised and trained for superstardom. And honestly, while it's not the world's best neighborhood, I can't stop laughing at some of the folks here pretending you're in the South Side or Compton or something. The neighborhood is older, it's a bit run down, but you're not going to find yourself in the middle of some gang shoot out. For me, I'm a huge MJ fan and it was super cool and super humbling to see where the Jackson family came from. I've been to Neverland, I've seen MJ's house in Vegas, and to compare those places to this tiny shack of a house is just astonishing. Even if they didn't grow up to be superstars, just imagining nine children being raised in such a tiny home is amazing to me. It really puts privilege in perspective. Plus, for any fan, to say you've actually been to 2300 Jackson Street (THEY LIVED ON JACKSON STREET, I MEAN, COME ON!) is kind of amazing. read more

Calling this a landmark is a stretch. It's a house on a street in ghetto-a$$ Gary, In. OMG I've never seen such a rundown city in my life! OK I actually have but Gary it's in the top 10. If you plan on visiting this, go during the day while it's light out. I would absolutely NOT feel safe here at night. But who would visit at night anyway?? Use your brains folks. The street itself is easy to find. It's off the main drag in Gary. There's no entry, you just see the house from the street. And the house is gated of course. So really all you can do it take pics out front. The house is extremely tiny (looks to be about 500 sq ft) so you can't help but wonder how so many people lived there Unless you plan on visiting Gary, there's no need to visit this place. read more

Sweet home where the Jackson family once lived. If you are south of Chicago you must see it. It's just about a mile off exit 10 and so worth it. Nice memorials to Michael and the whole family. It's in a neighborhood of friendly folks who smile and wave. People slow down and wait while you get photos. Previous reviews say it's scary...NOT! Nothing scary here. Regular people out mowing their lawns and watering their gardens. I imagined those nine little Jackson's running around and WOW I still can't believe Michael is gone. read more

Pretty cool place just to stop by. Not sure if you can go inside or not? When I was there the gates were locked up. Now the area is totally devastated. People there are really having a hard time. Not recommended to hang out in the area. Homes are gutted out by fires, others just abandoned, and the rest just not kept up. However if you want to see a peace of music history. Okay, listen: you're in Gary, IN, for pete's sake. Don't expect a slew of multimillion dollar homes, but at the same time...it's not nearly as bad as other reviews make it out to be. We went on a slightly rainy morning and it was pretty much a ghost town. That being said, I actually thought it was pretty cool seeing the (very) small Jackson family home. The house and lot is meticulously maintained. It's gated (the entire property, that is), but you can get plenty of great photos and see the tribute set up to the late King of Pop himself. There is graffiti everywhere--lots of "we love you" and "miss you, Michael"--but nothing on the actual property (check out the street signs and alley behind the house--no shortage of MJ love to be found :). Keep your expectations in check: you're seeing the house and nothing more. We spoke with one of the residents from a few houses down & he told us that occasionally people come out to pedal a little MJ merchandise, but other than that...it really is just a house. Worth a stop if you're anywhere near the area and a Jackson fan, but this isn't Neverland, baby. Not a theme park, not an elaborate shrine, but definitely visit-worthy if you've got some love for the King of Pop. :) read more

Mama-say, mama-sa, mama-ku-sah. If anything is Dangerous around here these days, it's the neighborhood where Michael Jackson grew up: getting here requires parading your way through the badlands of Gary, Indiana, and while we'd anticipated some Graceland-like shell games going down once we found the house (MJ paraphenalia or impersonators or bogus tours or whatnot ---), what we saw when we arrived felt much more pedestrian, tinged though it was by the reality that the rest of the area (one would imagine) hasn't changed much in its stead. In fact, what seems to have changed the most about the Jackson house (other than the black metal fencing surrounding the small square domicile) is the fact that none of them live here any more. Michael Jackson doesn't live anywhere any more (obviously), but the rest of the Jackson clan sprinted away from Gary eons ago, and other than this ongoing curiosity in their wake, the rest of the area seems a little like an angry time capsule. Considering the home itself, there are -- as you might ponder -- a monument or plaque or six that dot the place, and we sort of shot pictures of all of them with the idea of reading them later. It's hard to believe that someone who ended up capturing the world's attention no doubt started out in life at the end of a long line for a small bathroom. Although who knows, maybe feeling that cooped up is just enough to make one want to fly. Visit, but go in the daytime. read more

Relatively easy to find, but in case you lose your way it's on the corner of Jackson St and W 23rd, in Midtown. Obviously a must for Jackson 5 and Michael fans. Very unfortunate that there is not a museum inside (I'm sure there is a story there somewhere, but I don't know it). If you are unfamiliar with the history of Gary, it would be a great idea to watch the 12 min. You Tube video called "The Most Miserable City in America" for a bit of history of this once great steel town. While the Jackson house remains in great shape, the neighborhood is not unlike the rest of Gary: abandoned and run down. If you're a history buff AND a music fan, take a spin around the downtown, and see what a largely abandoned city looks like (there are not that many in America like it). Be sure to drive by City Methodist Church, to see what "white flight" in the 70's did to this once gorgeous church. The church has been the location for a handful of movies, including "Nightmare on Elm Street" and "Transformers: Dark of the Moon". As in any unfamiliar city, always be aware of your surroundings, as Gary still ranks as one of the most dangerous cities in America for its size. read more

Basically it's a house. Yes it's located in scary Gary and if your going to come see it, daylight is best. You will basically be able to pull up directly in front of the house or on the street depending on how heavy visitation is that day and time you visit. You can come take pics and say you were there. A Jackson relative lives next door on the left and over sees the property. Also depending on which season you visit there is lawn art on the property that was relocated from the never-land ranch. The property has a iron rod fence that keeps people off the property. It is littered with graffiti from fans who want to leave there mark and messages. Usually every few years they will repaint this fence however people continue to leave their mark. The neighborhood is bad but most people on the street are long time residents, and will be friendly and polite. The best time to visit is Michael's birthday when his mom and kids usually come for a visit and the street is a all day party. read more

I guess I just don't understand why this would be someones "destination." You can pretty much just view photos online and get the same experience you get driving/walking by here. Drove by his original house today to check it out. It's right off of the interstate and in Gary Indiana. The area the house is at looks pretty intimidating, but I felt alright. The area is kinda sad looking as it appeared to be a nice neighborhood at one point with nice looking houses, but now they are dilapidated and forgotten. Regardless, I drove by to check it out. Not much to really see. The house is fenced in but you can get out and write your name on a board or something. I drove by, took a couple of photos and then drove off. My family and I went this weekend to ohio from IL to see Janet Jackson and since we are such huge fans of the jackson family as musicians and people, we stopped by the place where they were raised in, their house in gary, indiana since it was on the way! I am very thankful for the reviews that i see here, so i know what i should expect, so it did help me. For my family and I, as i said, since were such a huge fans the short stop to gary indiana was a very humbling and great experience. To know that this was the place where they practiced their singing and dancing was really cool for us. I give it five stars because of that. Now the area seems sketchy and there were buildings/spots that were abandoned so as someone said, if you are to go please go in the morning/ afternoon when its daylight-- not at night. We went there around 8am. We were pretty good when we checked out their house as there was another family that took pics by the house and no one really bothered us. It was not until we checked the mural (about 5-7 min away from the house) where some guy who was looking for money came up to us saying he got discharged from the hospital and needs some money to get back to chicago. At that time i got a little nervous, thank god we got to take pics before he came by. After that we left right away to ohio lol, but the mural was beautiful and seeing the house was such a humbling experience.
