Keith and Team were presented with an impossible challenge, and rose to it. Late the week of 1/20 my son, the Marine, lost his great grandmother. By serendipity, he was on home on leave during her passing, and agreed, when asked, by his grandfather, the Airforce Vet, to cancel his plans, drive 8 hours, and be present and uniformed at the funeral. Great Grandma married an Army Air Corpsman after a whirlwind romance in 1942. She would have been quite impressed by the uniform. After all, she kept the last one over 50 years. In packing on Sunday night for a Tuesday morning funeral, our Marine became aware that his SIZE 14 patent leather shoes had not made the trip with his blues. Because Grandpa was so appreciative of his presence, that he assigned him pall bearer duties, ONLY the dress blues were appropriate for the event. I began first thing Monday morning calling any store in the KC area that had a sliver of a chance of fixing this problem in 24 hours or less. Keith and his staff answered their phone - no phone tree. They knew their inventory, their rental and sales abilities, and they jumped into action. When I arrived at 0930 the next morning, they had a plan A, a Plan B, and epic customer service and attention. I have blanked out the Marine's face as it was taken after the funeral. After fulfilling his duties at Mt Washington Cemetery, uphill, during a week with a rather lot of moisture, his shoes are no longer in regs... but they certainly completed the mission. read more

I took my father to buy a tux for an annual event. Bob was extremely helpful and although I did not allow enough time to purchase a properly tailored tux, Bob helped us rent a tux that fit my father perfectly. When you walk in you feel like you have stepped into a men's clothier in London. The display cases take you back to a time when Men's fashion was important and classic. Step further into the store and you see the latest in Men's fashion. This store has a wonderful selection of men's accessories. A nice large hat selection in the back should not be missed. This store made me wish we dressed up more often. The dressing rooms however, are tiny and poorly lit. After performing feats of contortion, you will have to step out to the three way mirror to admire your outfit. Tip, if there are only men in the store, dress in the open. read more

Five stars for not being like too many other places I personally find soul sucking, tedious and tiresome: the Dillard's, Nordstrom, Bloomingdale's, Kohl's, Neiman Marcus crowd, etc. ... yadda yadda. After years of only occasionally driving by and wondering about the store, made the stop and was immediately pleased with the personalized attention from their primary sales person on duty. I intend to return here as often as the need calls. My fiancé and I are getting married this weekend and we've been having the best customer service with Michael's. My brother and I were in to pick up our suits for the wedding and I was told by another customer that I looked good in it. We ended up talking for roughly 10-15 minutes about marriage and what a rough time it's been for everyone lately during the pandemic. He then spoke to Bob and Keith and said he would like to pay for our suits as a wedding gift. I was moved to tears and couldn't thank him enough. This man has been a lifelong customer and Michael's has gained another. One day I hope to be in there getting another suit and I will pay it forward to a groom before his big day. Very unprofessional place! We ordered 14 tuxes and only 1 was correct! 1 had dried blood the Jr groomsmen's shoes were the wrong size so had to start pictures with no shoes on! I will never go to this place again I will tell everyone about my experience!! For the price of the tuxes they should've fit! The father of the brides tux was a "slim fit" he's not slim and would've never ordered that! One of the grooms men's pants we so tight they ripped. At Michael's, I experienced the longest step back in time upon entering a clothing store that wasn't selling vintage items. I need mention that although the vibe is decidedly old fashioned, a young man would do himself a favor by checking out what they have to offer. While you won't find anything intentionally trendy, you will find classic pieces. I admit to feeling a bit out of my league here. Whenever shopping for men and confronted with considerations like neck and sleeve measurements, I'm at a loss. I know these are necessary things for the perfect fit, but I can't get these numbers straight. I think I'm just too obsessed with my own waist-to-hip ratio to even think outside the hourglass. Of course the fine gents who work here are at your disposal. They sense the damsel in distress as she crosses the threshold. So lost in bygone days, I half expected James Stewart to come running out of a dressing room exclaiming over a swell suit he had just tried on. Or, would it be the K? (Shucks, I swear sometimes I am dating a reincarnation of James Stewart but that's besides the point here). But, James Stewart is no longer with us. And the K wasn't with me on my recent visit. I was alone and shopping for a gift for him, and a bit overwhelmed by the aforementioned measurements and all of the merchandise: ties to cuff links to hats to suits to sweaters to slacks (that's right. They've celebrated their 100th anniversary back in 2005, and are still as cool as ever. Well, maybe cool isn't the right term, but they still have what it takes to make men fashionable. Selling men's apparel and accessories, Michael's inventory includes just about everything men could need. I especially liked their tie selection going from modern design to classic boldness and back again to skinny ties. Here's why, like I said, there's great service, but also there's great history here too. Michaels was one of the few white businesses in Kansas City to sponsor the KC Monarchs, the legendary Negro League baseball team (Satchel Paige & Buck O'Neil were two of hits hall of famers). Not only were they sponsors of the League, but according to long standing black business owners in KC, they treated ALL people with dignity and respect. This is of course something we take for granted today, but in 1905 when the store opened, this was unusual. Keith, the owner, is deservedly proud of this aspect of his family history. The place is so warm and inviting when I walked in and Keith made me feel at home while he took my measurements. Michael's has been on Main in Kansas City since 1905. Although it's easy to forget given the number of tv or radio ads for competitors' mall or chain stores around the city, do yourself a huge favor, whether you are a guy shopping for a new suit, jackets, pants, shirts, hats, ties, or other accessories - or a woman with a man in her life that could use an update - and make sure to stop in; you won't be disappointed. At heart, I am still a country boy and my current lineup of formal/business wear is definitely not up to current standards, and neither is my knowledge of all the various items that go into a mature, classy look. Thankfully, Les helped us out by explaining what the various options were, helping us to build from a base of a few pieces that could easily be mixed and matched with other items down the line while still getting us in great shape for the formal event coming up in a just a week's time. At no point was he pushy or attempting to up-sell, but instead was very patient, informative, and considerate of the fact that we knew very little about what went into a great piece of clothing and how to put it all together. Winston, the in-house tailor, took careful measurements and promised everything would be ready to go within the next few days - I even had enough time to come in and try everything on for any additional alterations, despite the busy holiday season. When I came to pick the suit up for the holiday formal, it fit better than I could have imagined, no additional alteration necessary. Secondarily, we are very pleasantly surprised at how reasonably everything was priced, inspiring me to put additional attention into this area of my wardrobe in the future. Now, granted, you might be used to lower prices at the mall, but if there are many items left in the world today where paying for what you get is true, it's a fine-quality garment. Having just been exposed to the racks at the mall, I can now see the apparent difference in quality between those cheaply made suits and the quality of the garments at Michael's. We easily expected to pay nearly twice what the final outcome was, and couldn't have been any happier with our experience. The real proof, though, was in my wife's eyes the first time she saw me in my new outfit. While I haven't quite hit the years-long threshold of diet and exercise that allows just any old t-shirt and jeans to qualify me as beefcake material, this suit definitely made me look, as the saying goes, like a million bucks. Not to mention, much to her delight-slash-chagrin, I received several compliments from other ladies at the event. I really enjoyed shopping at Michael's in KCMO. They have an excellent selection of men's fine clothing. Jasper assisted me and did a fine job helping me with my alterations. The owner was pleasant to speak with and provided excellent customer service providing history of his store that's been family owned for generations. I do not wear suits regularly and am very out of my element when it comes to buying a suit. I have had terrible experiences at national chains when buying suits in the past and opted for something different. I showed up on my Harley, in t-shirt, jeans, boots and chains. I wondered how I'd be received, especially when I walked in and saw how nice the place was. I was greeted warmly and graciously by the owner, he helped me find the right suit at a great price. They got me marked up for tailoring by a very professional and kind gentleman from the Islands. It was a great experience. I do not expect to buy a suit elsewhere in Kansas City again. I'm 26 and in college, without a stash of money waiting to go out the window for a suit. I knew the typical chain stores were not the way to go for me because even though this wasn't a purchase I wanted to make, I wanted this first experience to be of value. I chose to go to this place based on the reviews on Google. The owner and his son butted heads, arguing about this and that between themselves as they both got me fitted, which was funny to watch. But they were great to me and got me squared away in no time. I needed the suit for yet another pretentious interview with a big company and I couldn't afford to keep renting suits. The suit I picked with the tailoring was just under $400 - great for a first suit. Beware the two for one deals elsewhere - they send you off with suits not worth what you pay between the two of them. The company had to reschedule the interview to a week before it was supposed to happen, but the suit wasn't ready. I called them and you can guess how they handled it: finished the suit for me in time and did an amazing job too. As long as I live in KC, I'll go to these guys. They won't try to sell you what you can't afford or don't want. They know what they're doing and still have the customer service virtue that so many places lack these days. Whether it's your first suit or you're looking for the next one, this is the place to go. Their store is also huge, with everything from shirts to vests, hats and shoes. They even have awesome parking, in downtown KC! They're putting in that ridiculous rail car right in front of their building, but you can still park on the south side. read more

As a KC native, I'm embarrassed to say that I recently went into Michael's for the first time. The KC history and their knowledge of the city and clothing business is second to none! If you're sick of the same homogenous mall shopping, you need to check this out. This is a real men's haberdashery. They have everything from pool wear to formal wear. They can outfit you for any occasion no matter what your size. They have Big & Tall as well as traditional sizes. The in-house tailors are quite impressive too. If your weight fluctuates, they will alter your clothes at no charge. That's hard to find. This 5th generation family owned KC store is a must see if you like being well dressed. read more

It was well worth the drive into KC for a personalized and attention to detail oriented experience you simply wouldn't get at a big box menswear store. 41 days. It took 41 days to get my uniform altered. It wouldn't have been a big deal, except I was quoted 2.5-3 weeks max, which was incorporated into my scheduling for work. (Airline Pilot) Week 4.5 came with a call saying that they had JUST started my order, which forced me to borrow another pilots uniform for work. No big deal. When I returned from my trip, I went to Michael's to pick up my order. The order was only 3/4 complete, a pair of pants had not even been started on. When I asked for a refund on the pair of pants that haven't been worked on I was told that it wasn't possible and that they would move my pants to the front of the line.... fast forward to another week with no pants, I called Michael's and was informed that they were "very busy" and my pants still hadn't been worked on yet. Needless to say, very frustrating, especially for the price point. Don't take on additional work that you can't turn around within the agreed upon timeline. As for the work. The suit jacket is superbly done. The pants however were clearly rushed (did the SAME day I called and complained again), and not nearly the quality of work you'd expect from a place that has been around for "100 years." If you need work done within about 4 weeks, I would go elsewhere. If you have the time and don't mind paying a bit more for the shops aesthetics and not the quality of work, then Michael's will suit you just fine. read more

My significant other was a groomsmen in a wedding recently and they rented suits from Michael's. We are not from KC so he was fitted else where and sent in the measurements. He was charged about 200 bucks to rent the suit and then it didn't even fit well, actually it fit horribly. It was so tight that you could see his dress shirt from his pockets because they wouldn't even lay flat. Actually every single suit used for the wedding had an issue, pants were too short or too tight; suit coats were too tight. I can understand the possibility of messing up one persons suit but there were approximately 10 people who rented suits. Also, we both had to miss work on Friday to pick the suit up on time, in case he required additional alterations which would have cost an additional 75 bucks, however there was no fixing what was wrong with his suit. So he wore his suit and had to wear a too tight suit coat over top of his pants the entire day and night to ensure his pockets weren't exposed. I am thankful that everyone involved in the wedding had great senses of humor and were not phased by the issues because ultimately at the end of the day they were a happily married couple! I would not recommend renting suits from here. I know for several other weddings we've been in he has had tailored suits and they even kept the suit for about the same price as he rented this suit. I've heard from others they have had suits made and purchased them from Michaels and perhaps that's the way to go. But we will not be using them again and if he has to rent from them again we will highly suggest using someone else. read more

I went in to get fitted for a tux, and as one guy was holding up a tape measure to my various evidences of obesity, another guy stood off to the side and eyeballed me for each measurement. He would call out the number for each measurement prior to the guy with the tape measure taking his look, and he was right every time. Classy, dignified, helpful, and a little too expensive for kids. I live in Seattle, and I tend to shop at higher end stores...but came up short on a good looking tux for a special wedding that was a black tie event. I called and talked to Michael the owner, and Kevin and they made sure that they were ready when I went straight to their shop from the airport. Long story short, Michael set me up and Kevin took care of the details, and I ended up with a beautiful Italian made tux with the complete setup. Basically, great weekend in KC and brought home a tux for less than I would have paid for the tux alone in Seattle. Everyone loves a good deal, and being well treated, but you just don't find this kind of experience every day, though. Its easy to see how they've stayed in business over 100 years. I Rented a black and white tuxedo from Michael's for an event (National Barbie Doll Collectors Convention) on Saturday evening. The Tux was perfect, fit well, and even the shoes were perfect! (Which never happens with my wide feet) I ended up with a much nicer rental for FAR less money, and with better service then if I had rented from a chain. Since I needed the Tuxedo for the event on Saturday evening, It would have been impossible for me to return the Tuxedo to the store myself; as my flight back home left early Monday morning, before the shop opened, and they are closed on Sunday. This is something I did not realize untill Saturday morning as I looked over my schedule. I called over to Michael's Saturday (the day of the rental) and spoke to Keith, who was wonderful. He agreed to pick up the Tuxedo from the hotel I was staying with on Monday morning, since the shop was so close to my hotel. (Something I did not expect, as most places are only willing to pick up from a hotel in the case of a large event rental such as a wedding) After working out the details with the hotel concierge, everything was set. I did NOT expect such great, personal service! This is the reason this local shop has been in business so long. Personal, and wonderful service dosn't exist anymore, and I'm indebeted to Keath and the entire staff for making this event a success for me. Rent from here! About a year ago I took my 21 y.o. son to buy a pair of good dress pants. His mother always takes him to Kohl's or JC Penney and buys cheap junk. I told Noah I would treat him to a shopping experience and went to Michael's. He's a big and young guy and one of their salesmen took him around, found the trousers and spent an hour fitting, altering and producing a great product. He went back a month or so ago in need of a dress suit. Keith, the owner, helped him, spent a good deal of time finding an athletic fit and unique suit and was told by Noah he needed it in a couple hours. When he returned this dark brown and dark blue patterned suit fitted him like the proverbial kid glove and looked simply spectacular. Here, they're trying to make sure you leave with the right clothes for you. That's a critical difference. As an example, I found a shirt that I really really liked but was just slightly too small for me. The gentlemen who I asked to let me into the changing room stuck around and told me honestly that it was perhaps a bit on the small side and did his absolute best to find something that would be a better fit, bringing me several different shirts to try on. Unfortunately nothing i liked was available in my size because it was too close to the end of summer and they had stopped ordering summer clothes in order to clear out inventory space for winter stuff. sadness.
