Procedure went well but still left 2 larger stones instead of one super large one. Was able to pass one of the halves on my own successfully with no problem. Went back in to see Chalian and he ordered that I have the internal surgery that has potential dangers of tearing. I said no, i didn't want to have the procedure and instead wanted to pass it on my own as I had the other with great success. He got very frustrated with me, tell me I was making a mistake. I assured him I was not feeling any of the pain I was before so why have the invasive surgery? He ordered that I have an ultrasound (very spendy ultrasound!) immediately onsite to prove to me that he was right and it was causing my kidney issue. Results came back that my kidney was just fine, no swelling whatsoever. I confirmed that I would absolutely not be having the surgery and never returned to see him again. Passed the stone just fine on my own with no surgery needed. His attitude towards me, a forty year old female, was that of he knew better than I did about what my body was feeling and that he was going to strong arm me into having the invasive surgery. And all this after I was left to wait in the freezing cold room for almost an hour waiting for him to come in. Finally had to peek out to make sure I hadn't been completely forgotten. Otherwise, reception staff were nice, but wait times there were ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE.

One of the women who worked there spoke to me with condescension, and seemed highly annoyed as if I couldn't possibly understand the weight of my own choices. It felt less like a medical consultation and more like a lecture from a disapproving grandparent. What made it worse was learning that a friend of mine--barely a year older, in nearly the exact same situation--was approved and received the procedure from this same practice. The double standard was frustrating and honestly insulting. Their communication was also terrible. I tried reaching them for months and only ever got one returned call. If you're young and want a urologist who treats you like an adult and respects your autonomy, go somewhere else. But if you're fine with being patronized, and held to arbitrary standards, this is the place for you.

Dr. Bock is a fairly new urologist with Urology of Indiana working primarily out of the Avon and…read moreCarmel offices, though it seems she is mostly with the Avon office. I was referred to Dr. Bock by my primary care physician to explore issues related to my spina bifida along with chronic infection issues. Due to some trauma in my background, I typically request a female physician or, when that's not possible, make clear a need for trauma-informed care. Dr. Bock was also an option under my insurance company. I was able to get an appointment fairly quickly. With my first two appointments actually being in the Carmel office, my third being at IU Hospital - West, and my fourth via telehealth with the Avon office. I believe that Dr. Bock is fairly new as an MD, though she completed both her internship in surgery and residency here at IU. I had a handful of things I really liked about her after my first appointment, though I'll also acknowledge I wasn't quite sure at that point. She is very matter-of-fact, though in an accessible way. This can come off very abrasively, however, it doesn't with her. She is very good at clinical speak, though makes the language generally accessible. She's also very consistent with saying "What questions do you have?" Her appointments tend to be right about 20 minutes - I have a slight cognitive processing delay and that can make processing info difficult, but I appreciated that she tries to make sure there's time for questions. Dr. Bock knew fairly quickly she wanted to do a cystoscopy - fairly standard with spina bifida. I'm fairly resistant to this type of test, but I'd met my deductible for the year and I also knew I'd been having enough issues that it was a good idea. Plus, I felt like having a female physician might help my comfort level. She ordered an MRI and noted that I'd come back into the office for the cystoscopy. The cystoscopy was my second appointment, but due to some of my own issues it wasn't successful in the office. I appreciated that Dr. Bock explained this, though this meant likely outpatient surgery. I wasn't thrilled with going all the way out to Avon, but I wanted to get it ASAP (or before I chickened out) and in this benefit year. We discussed the procedure fairly thoroughly and it was noted a conscious sedation would be used. About 10 days later, I experienced Dr. Bock again for the procedure. The anesthetic procedure changed a couple more times (much to my frustration). However, Dr. Bock made sure to see me before the surgery, before I was put out in the OR, and after the surgery. She explained the results well (though perhaps a bit too much info was provided to a friend who was there as my driver and not as my next of kin or such). There was also a momentary frustration when I noted that I didn't have anyone staying with me for 24 hours after the surgery (I'd told the pre-assessment nurse several days earlier). This threatened to delay the surgery, but I assured them I'd have someone with me for a couple hours, had an emergency button at home, and had friends checking on me. My final appointment with Dr. Bock occurred via telehealth to receive surgery results - not particularly good news that meant I needed to be referred out to someone else. I was a bit surprised that this was handled via telehealth (which had been suggested by Dr. Bock's office and not requested by me), however, this gave me a glimpse into a more "human" Dr. Bock as she stopped using words like "patient" in favor of "people" or "person." She was very thorough in her explanation including why she needed to refer me out. She felt like I would do well with someone she had interned under and has initiated the referral. She also let me know she would be having a conversation with this doctor. She left open the idea that I could potentially return to her in the future once certain concerns are addressed, though my sense was this was likely more for soothing my anxiety than actually true. While Dr. Bock has interest in fairly significant urological conditions, at this point in her career she's mainly focused on general urology and does appear to work with both men and women. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend her for general urological issues, though for more significant concerns my guess is she'd be likely to make a referral at this point in her career. She was very matter-of-fact but compassionate and gently moved me toward having a procedure I very much needed but didn't want to have. She understood my issues and honored them and approached my care with clinical expertise and an understanding of trauma-informed care. I'd be surprised if she doesn't become a 5-star physician, a nice weaving together of knowledge and compassion. I'm very comfortable rating her at 4-stars at this point and would easily return to her for general urological needs.

I had been to the E.R. the previous 3 weeks with problems urinating, blood in my urine, and extreme…read morepain. Upon Dr. Leak entering the room, he behaved as if I were in his way or keeping him from something else. As I tried to explain all my symptoms and the constant pain I was in, he kept cutting me off mid-sentence. This is the first time I'd ever met this person and he was treating me like I'd just paid $100.00 for him to ignore me. Somehow, we reached the end of this horrible ordeal and he said he wanted to schedule a cystoscopy. Given that I'd been in pain for the past couple of months already, I asked him if I could be given something for pain from today until the following week when the procedure was to be done. He did not answer me. He left the room and his nurse entered and again, I asked her about something for pain. She left the room and I saw her go to him to ask. He turned around quickly and came to my door and held up his hand in the shape of a "0" (zero) and told me that, "he was not a pain management specialist." I'm 31 years old and I have never been treated so unprofessionally by a doctor in my life. He had all my records from my E.R. visits that proved I was in pain and having definite and persistent problems urologically. I was treated like I was not a human. Isn't he a Doctor? Don't they prescribe pain medication when needed? This is just mind boggling to me that he was behaving like a 16 year old boy! I don't believe I was asking too much for pain medication until the procedure was over. The pain was so great, I was having difficulty walking. And many other issues I won't go into now. I've had surgery on both knees, but the pain associated with those surgeries pales in comparison to the pain I'm going through now. Those physicians I had for those surgeries DID NOT behave like this! Quite the contrary. They made every effort to make sure I was comfortable and my pain was at a manageable level. In conclusion, this man, doctor is not what I would call him, should stop acting like a spoiled brat and start behaving like a REAL doctor. One who wants to HELP people get better and ease their pain. Treating his patients with dignity and respect. Stop humiliating them and looking at us as if we are scum on the bottom of his shoes. I will never, ever go back to this man. I wasted $100.00 that I could have spent on a REAL doctor. Nor will I ever forget how I was treated when I reached out to him for help. Thank You,

They always forget to send a reminder when it is time for a scan or an appt. We would change drs, but we like him so we put up with it. We just have to double check everything they tell us.
