When the staff finally paid attention to me, I asked for any local artisans (spinners, dyers, animals). They didn't have anything new to me--they mentioned a couple Vancouver dyers, but being from Vancouver I wanted something from Vancouver Island. They also may have had 1 dyer from the Island but I'd already bought that artisan's yarn at another store. Overall, the experience was an overload for my senses, and disappointing for my stash enhancement (since I was looking for something so specific). They have helped me time and time again to find the right yarn I need for my projects in the colors I want as well as sharing lots of knowledge of what yarn is best and what substitutes I can use if I want a specific feel or durability. When I get confused and stuck on a pattern I can pop here and they will patiently help me through it. If you want lots of help you can have a one on one lesson for only $10 an hour! It is nice atmosphere to come and knit (or whatever your hobby is) in and there are groups that meet during the week that you can join into as well. I was looking for a local dyer/spinner/artisan for Souvenir Yarn, and the staff member was able to point me in the direction of one. She actually didn't even come out from behind the desk, which in a small store where I was the only customer, actually was fine. If there had been more than just me in the store, this would have felt dismissive. The organization was a bit haphazard in my opinion; the dyer I was looking at was placed at various places around the store, I think depending on weight or perhaps fibre type. I'm not sure. But in the end I found something I liked, the staff member was helpful recommending patterns and telling me about the sample garments I was admiring. Then we had a funny chat about their logo/mascot. They had a name contest and I think the character was eventually named Gordon "Ram"sey.
