The owner of this business is shady, unprofessional, and uncaring. She took my many new clothing with tags and then proceeded to say nothing but one item sold. She refused to give me my money or items claiming that they must have been stolen and that's why they are not found. I am very disappointed that I wasted my time with this store because I feel lied to and ripped off. I followed all her rules and then she changed her story at the end. Heard great things about Michele's from local record store owners, but was disappointed when I went in. Not a lot of variety, tacky rather than vintage items, and the building didn't have any AC. I'm a huge thrifter and most of the things I wear/decorate with are upscaled, but this place didn't give me much to work with. I left empty handed. read more

Wow. Huh. What? My bestie and I walk in, start looking through racks. Some stuff is noticeably used (stained, worn, etc), others are new. Cute cheap dresses, tops, et al. WAY overpriced. $48- for a $15- dress, are you kidding me? We're there a few minutes when some girl in the back yells out that we need to "check your purses". My bestie & I look at each other as she again yells out from the back "we have a locker system, you have to lock up your purses!" I turn to her holding up my tiny clutch and ask "You want me to lock up my little bag?" Her answer? "We have a locker system, you need to look up your purses." You have a crappy location, I have no idea how you break even every month and you finally get 2 well dressed, attractive women who have money in your store and you basically accuse them of future theft? I don't understand all of the complaints from the other reviews, every time I have gone to Michele's closet, it has been a wonderful experience! When I first walked in, I met with a lady (Who I believe was Michele) and she seemed to be the sweetest, most smiley lady, and she politely asked me and my companions to lock up our bags for security. It's understandable that such a small store would need a locker security system, and it really doesn't take away from your shopping experience. I have gone into this store multiple times and I have found incredibly cute clothing for reasonable prices. I even found a prom dress, which was originally a $200 by Camille, on discount for $10. During this prom season, there was also a huge selection of dresses ranging from $30-$70. After searching and searching the mall for a dress that wasn't $200, I was so glad to find Michele's! Finding the perfect dress for hardly any cash, even if it needs little alterations, is totally worth it. Also, Michele's always seems to have the perfect selection. Whenever I'm desperate for a piece of clothing to give me that extra "oomph" for my date, Michele's has never let me down. I will continue to be a returning customer, and I have already recommended this place to all of my girlfriends! read more

Michele's closet actually has a decent amount of potential. They have many cute pieces, some fairly unique in design. The main thing about the clothing is usually the quality isn't really high and honestly I'm okay with that usually. I can make some basic alterations if I can reason with it. The main thing is it has to start out pretty cheap, which most of their stuff doesn't. I guess because I come from Atlanta and I've seen the locker system many times in places like downtown and little 5 points, I've just kinda grown used to it. While the locker system is a bit insulting, under pretty much any condition, most of the time I can see where they are coming from. Here I don't necessarily get it. The woman who runs the place seems to always be in the front, and it's not like they are on a street with many pedestrians just wandering in. Somethings just make more sense in the city. The woman (i assume is Michele) has never been very rude to me. I tried to make conversation today with her when I bought a bracelet for my friend back home , and she just seemed a bit awkward at it. She wasn't rude just not very social. Maybe it's just me and my southern hospitality doesn't fit in with the Floridians (though everywhere else people have been friendly). The main thing that confuses me about Michele's closet is the "costume room". Apparently you can only go in if you ask and no other customers are in the store. Let me say that I've never seen that anywhere else. Costume stuff is usually kinda cheap because it's only meant to be worn a few times, so I don't get treating the costume room like it's Fort Knox. Eh, Michelle is kind of paranoid or something. I've never been asked to put my purse in a locker for "safekeeping" upon entering the store. She wasn't nasty about it, but...c'mon. The merchandise was okay, typical consignment shop fare, nothing too exciting. Picked up some $11 converse, so not too bad. She said she had just marked them down from $22....uh, maybe no one had bought them because they're friggin used shoes for $22? Keep smokin'. I went to Micheles closet and dropped off 50 pieces of really great condition clothing. The girl is soooo rude and unfriendly. Anyway I thought maybe she was having a bad day. I returned a month and a half later and was greeted in the same rude way. Then when I asked if I had anything sold she rudely handed over $20.50. I know she sold way more than that. Of course she takes possesion of your items after 45 days. What a rip off and SCAM artist she is. Well if she is so miserable she can have the profit she made off my clothing. I've driven by this store several times and thought it looked interesting, so on a Saturday my 25 year old daughter and I went to see what it was like. I had even "liked" it on Facebook and thought maybe they give a discount for that. Yeah, right. By the time we left, (after an awkward and uncomfortable15 minutes,) we were asking ourselves, is this woman rude and condescending to everyone, or just us? Does she think we look particularly dishonest? Not dressed boho-hip enough for her? I couldn't wait to get online to see what other people had to say about it. It's kind of a relief to read that, unfortunately, she behaves this way a lot. As we walked in the door, we said a friendly hello, and I mentioned that I had been looking forward to coming to the shop, and added that I had "liked" the shop on Facebook. Nothing, no response at all. Weird. Then came the often mentioned, "You have to put your purses in a locker." Just as rude as can be. I thought is was kind of silly, I mean, really? For such a small store? But, we did as we were told, and then looked around some, still trying to be friendly. No other customers in the store, only us. Then we went into the "sale" room. I noticed her sitting at the front desk staring at us, you know, really obviously, and she continued to watch us like a hawk while we were in there. She took no pains to hide the fact that she was sure we were about to steal something. (Okay, obviously you've had some theft at your store, but don't punish everyone for what a few have done!) You are better off donating your clothes because Michele will: - "donate" items that were fit to sell when you dropped them off & had not been marked as unable to be sold halfway through your 45 day consignment (seems a little too convenient) - be unable to locate many items you had consigned, claiming they must have sold in the week after the end of your consignment before you could return to pick them up... Supposedly I only had ONE item sell in 45 days, yet 5 items could not be located so they must have sold in the one week AFTER my consignment window had expired (meaning I received $0 of the profit) CONSIGNORS BEWARE - PREPARE TO GRAB YOUR ANKLES!!! read more

Coming from a larger city, I understand the reasoning behind the locker system in place. Apparently theft has been a problem for her, and she wants to protect her store- it makes perfect sense. I did not look at the regular clothing so much as the costumes, but there is a wide selection of fun and unconventional costumes. All are for sale, and some are also available for rent. The deposit is ridiculously huge for most items, but since it's a deposit, its not that big of a deal. My roommate tried on a really fun Oscar the Grouch costume with a full length "trash can" skirt and fuzzy top. It's really original and sure to not be worn by anyone else. The lady at the front of the store was polite enough. Since I was looking at costumes, she mentioned a few possibilities for me, which I personally feel comes across as pushy since I'm pretty picky and I don't like constantly refusing. However, I did not find her behavior out of place or rude in the slightest. I do not understand why people are so touchy about the things they have complained about. This store is a consignment shop, not a thrift store. Like Plato's Closet, they carefully select pieces, and don't take just anything, causing their prices to be higher than that of the Salvation Army. This also leads to a lot more "hits." The pieces they sell are fun, original, and creative. I definitely plan on coming by again. read more

My wife declined to follow this absurd and insulting rule, and said she was either going to shop with her purse or just leave. She took everything and I got about $6 for all of it. What a waste of time and $$. A year later, I found a great store, Rose's cottage. They take all my stuff and I make lots of $$. To all of those bashing the locker system and the owner's "unfriendly" attitude: To be frank, if you've never worked retail, and if you've never felt the personal violation of being shoplifted from, then you can't possibly relate with the need for a locker system. The fact is, it's a simple and effective measure that prevents a lot of theft. In this store owner's case, it's clearly more worth it to ensure that her consigners' items are safe and sound than it is to save the embarrassment of having to ask you to lock up your purse. I mean really, people. Come down off your ego horses. It's not a big deal to put the purse down for 30 minutes to give the shop owner peace of mind. And don't for one second try to tell me that locking up your purse means the owner is insinuating that you will steal from her. It only means that she doesn't discriminate against your appearance when trying to prevent theft from her store. Totally fair and square. Is it a "ghetto" method? Maybe. But how many of you out there know the cost of operating a business and want to drop thousands on security measures when something as simple as a locker system might just be equally or more effective? It's a smart move on her part, and if it costs her a few picky/unreasonable customers, then it served a double-purpose. As for her "unfriendly" attitude: I find it no coincidence that the same people fussing about the locker system also have a complaint about her attitude. So here's a little outside perspective: I have been shopping at Michele's Closet for close to 10 years (very irregularly, however - varies from once every couple months up to a couple times per month) and I have never been treated with anything less than mutual respect - which is exactly why I continue to consign with her. She's a free spirited hippie type, for goodness sake! If you received an attitude from Michele, most likely you (a) misinterpreted due to your own bias, or (b) earned it. So perhaps you should evaluate your own personal attitude towards authority figures and/or other women before writing a bad Yelp and potentially costing a local business owner to lose prospective customers. Often times we are being unreasonable and then fail to comprehend that others are just reflecting/mirroring our behavior in response. Just a thought. To address the merchandise price/quality issues: In case you failed to notice yet, Michele's Closet is NOT a thrift shop. She can't survive by pricing items the same way a Goodwill store does. She splits profits 50/50 with her consigners which is why "designer" (recognizable) labels are initially labeled with higher prices. In bigger cities, this is the norm. Yes, we're in Melbourne - but so what? When items don't sell, she gives them a fair markdown. And she always has a handful of healthily packed sale racks. Quality is rarely an issue in her store. She constantly denies damaged/stained items from consigners for this purpose. If you find a damaged item, bring it to her attention and she'll most likely discount the item or try to fix it herself. After reading the comments below, I was delighted to hear that I was not the only customer with a underwhelming experience. Forget customer service at Michelle's Closet - this lady gives no cares in the world about appeasing her customers. With the way this store is run, along with the absurd rules of the store, there is little left to the imagination about how Michelle's closet is still open, other than a classic case of money laundering. The items are completely outdated, the owner is stoic and unfriendly, and it is an insult to anyone's intelligence that a 50% owner profit is ensured on any sales she makes. Unlike the others, Michele actually WAS rude to me. Also, I consigned a boatload of clothing with her. After getting "not much action because it was the slow season" she asked to keep them a little longer. When I finally settled with her, I got soooooooooo ripped off; she said the longer they sit in her store the less she gives you for them. SHE was the one who wanted to keep them longer because her store was slow! I us consignment stores all the time and she is just not a savy business lady; not friendly at all either! I made a HUGE mistake by taking all my name brand clothing and even 2 dresses that had cost me 150.00 plus each. When I went to get my stuff she only paid me $14? are you freaking kidding me? She sold like 10 items one of my dresses were missing she said that if I don't pick up within 45 days that anything that sells after that the money is hers on top of that she said anything she places in the bins by the doors that's mines and doesn't have tags is hers too. I wanted to seriously smack her...like who the hell does she think she is. The day I brought my clothes in I made a appt @ 4pm showed up on time she was like you have a appt I'm like yes it was made 3 weeks ago she goes your not in the books......I was like well I made an appt most likely by you I know the date cause it was booked today cause my son also had a doc appt this morning and I booked both for same date. I brushed it off thinking she had a bad day that day....but this time I was pissed ....Can you believe that when I showed up she made me go through all the clothes in the store to pick out my unsold items? I didn't even get all of them cause I was pissed and didn't feel like going through the entire store. That's ok cause word of mouth tells all. Mind you I'm bringing in clothes and items for her to profit off of and she doesn't have the courtesy to put them together for me prior to pick up? Her reason was anything after 45 days she doesn't put together. I called her like maybe 5 days prior to her 45 day period and made a appt to pick them up a week after since that was the 1st available time for her.. she didn't tell me at the time that its past her so called time period and wont collect my shit. SO I WOULD DEFINATLY SAY STEER AWAY FROM Michele's Closet. She rips people off .She is very much snooty and VERY rude.
