I love that my kid is allowed to get this dirty in Michelle's Backyard!

Michelle's Backyard (MB) deserves all the stars in the universe, and every child and family deserves a daycare/preschool environment as supportive and enriching as this. I can't overstate this enough... MB is as much support network for parents as it is developmentally enriching for children. Expect to play, chat, hang out, connect, and carry relationships on for years to come. Our child started at 7 months old, and will continue until aging out at 3 years 7 months. WHAT INITIALLY DREW ME TO MICHELLE'S: * The play-based, learning-as-fun philosophy, as outlined on the website, coupled with maximum time outdoors. This is a place where kids are encouraged to explore, get dirty, and express themselves. * Meeting Michelle's own two children, who were 14 and 16 at the time, and who impressed me with their ability and willingness to engage in easy conversation, while also demonstrating caring interaction with the young children. I figured if she could raise two teenagers like that, she must be doing something right. * Being accosted by hugs as soon as I walked through the gate for my tour. There was a huge vibe of love and compassion. * The little potties sitting right there outside for easy access, indicative of the no-shame, honest environment it is. WHAT I THINK ABOUT IT NOW: CONS : AGING OUT. You will have to transition to another place for your child for 1-2 years before they are old enough for Kindergarten. If you are like us and have a winter baby, they will age out the summer before they turn 4. Definitely sad. CLOSURES. MB is closed a total of 4-5 weeks a year, which can be difficult for some families if they do not have work flexibility or other alternative care options. HOURS. 8am-5:30pm can be difficult if you definitely need to start work by 8am. PROS: MICHELLE, JOCELYN, GRAMMA. Not everyone can be upbeat, positive, excited, and endlessly compassionate at the end of nine hours with 12 kids under the age of 4. Their personalities, attitude, and philosophies make this place special. CREATIVITY. Learning is definitely made interesting and fun, not rote. Example: The kids had one hand wrapped in Crisco and plastic wrap to simulate blubber, then stuck both hands into a tub of ice water to understand how a thick layer of fat might help polar bears, whales, seals, and penguins to thrive in frigid environments. Who thinks of stuff like that??!? MESS. Sandbox, garden, mud kitchen, painting parties, cooking... enough said. BOUNDARIES. For all the freedom the kids have, clear boundaries are set and adhered to. Safety and behavioral rules are clear and consistently enforced. Whining and fits are not tolerated. Your kid will also get onto a clear routine for nap and eating times. PERSONAL CARE. That said, if your kid is having a rough day, they will figure out a way to hold and cuddle your kid, without lessening the care given to the others. They push kids to get better at areas where they struggle, while also respecting unique preferences and personalities (they let my child watch sports class for months to get used to the idea, before finally pushing participation). The uniqueness of each child is emphasized and celebrated. They will also accommodate food allergies. HONESTY. Michelle will tell you what she thinks is best for your child, bluntly, no easing into it, often unsolicited. It comes from a place of helpfulness and experience, not judgement. What I appreciate is that Michelle will often work with you, even if she isn't a huge fan of your decision/method. When she told us she thought we were tackling potty training too early, we were afraid she might just put our kid in a diaper, but instead she gave it a shot, and helped make the transition happen successfully. SICK POLICY (some people may consider this a con for germ transmission reasons). You won't be getting a call every time your kid has a slight fever or a dripping nose. EXTRAS. For the kids, MB has regular programming like sports class, music class, yoga, on a weekly basis, plus field trips or other special on-site enrichment (animal visits, egg hunts, etc.) usually monthly. For the parents, MB offers babysitting nights from time to time so parents can get out, or Mom Night/Dad Night activities hosted by her to help parents get to know one another better. For families, there are weekend outings or potlucks, usually quarterly, where extended family can participate, too. Michelle is also known to give random gifts... a new Plasma Car showed up on our front porch one day, with a note telling us our child enjoyed riding them at Michelle's Backyard, and that one might be enjoyed at home, too. What other daycare does that?

When I first applied, we were more than 100 spots down on the waitlist. I checked in regularly, hoping for an opening, and when the opportunity finally came during the pandemic, I felt incredibly fortunate. My oldest daughter was ready to start preschool, and from day one, we fell in love with Journey of Faith. Since then, both of our daughters have attended. Our youngest started at just five months old and will be heading to kindergarten next year, which feels incredibly bittersweet. Throughout every stage, the teachers and staff have created a nurturing, supportive, and joyful environment where our girls have truly thrived. The education they have received has been phenomenal, but what stands out even more is the genuine care, love, and dedication shown by everyone at the school from the teachers and administrators to the chef and support staff. Every person contributes to making Journey of Faith feel like a second home. We are so thankful for the friendships, memories, and strong foundation our daughters have gained here. Journey of Faith has played such an important role in our family's life, and we wholeheartedly recommend it to any family looking for a loving, high-quality preschool experience.

We enjoyed most of our time there, made great friendships, and grew as parents. However, as time went on and we began to get more involved (including serving on the Board for 2 years), it became clear that not all was well. The director, Carol Tatsumi, repeatedly dismissed community feedback unless it fit her vision of how school should operate. She failed to distribute the co-op bylaws to the Board or parents, such that no one knew they had voting rights as members or how the co-op should work. When this came to light, she denied wrongdoing and rejected suggestions from the Board to share the bylaws with members so they could be made aware of their rights and responsibilities in the organization. She even had Board Meeting minutes deleted that contained any bylaw discussion, even though they are supposed to be made available to members. Furthermore, the director failed to abide by California state laws and permitted 60% of the students enrolled to be unvaccinated and used the students records who WERE vaccinated to be the "cover" during state inspections. Once caught by the government agency, she abruptly unenrolled the students who were partially or fully unvaccinated rather than giving them the 10 days allowed by the government to either get up to date or at least say goodbye to the school and have a smooth transition. This was incredibly painful for those students and their families and negatively impacted the entire school community. Sadly, this "co-op" doesn't operate like one, and it's poorly operated at that. The building is in need of major repairs although the director dismissed multiple suggestions to improve its safety, function, and appearance. Furthermore, the school has been losing money due to low enrollment and hasn't recovered since COVID, so there is limited budget to address safety concerns let alone hire, develop, or retain talented staff. Finally, the "rules" families need to follow is laundry list long, from forbidding packaged foods to making kids turn their shirt inside out if it has a character or any brand on it. There might only be 3 kids at school one day, but all parents need to volunteer every single week such that there are often more adults on campus than children. And perhaps most disappointing, there isn't actual coaching of non-violent communication skills, just avoiding of setting limits and boundaries among kids such that exclusion and cliqueyness prevail. This school will probably be a fit for those looking for a very specific experience for their children, but do know that there are not enough families enrolled here to make this co-op run smoothly, so you will be required to do more than your fair share to try to keep it running and your feedback to how it could be more efficiently handled will probably be ignored. Good luck!

We were admittedly nervous to go to a different co-op, thinking they'd be similar in operations. They are prepared, thoughtful, and generous in how they treat the kids, how they consider playfulness and activities for the children and how they engage the parents. We love how play-based Sand Tots is, their emphasis on social-emotional development and how they artfully navigated preparing our oldest for Kindergarten but in a fun and still playful way. We are just so grateful to have found our preschool home for our youngest. Co-ops are inherently more "work" than a traditional preschool or daycare experience for parents. It's not for everyone, and yet, if you're willing (and able!) to participate, it fosters a sincerely wonderful community amongst like-minded parents.
