I never expected to do obedience competitively, but the book gave me a lot of great ideas for training my new puppy. I took a couple of classes with my dog at Northfield Dog Training, both times with Adele. I learned a lot and raised a well-behaved pet. With the goal of getting my current dog certified as a therapy animal, I'm back to Northfield Dog Training to polish up my dog training skills. I have been making tiny mistakes. Having a coach is a huge help. Having a small set of weekly goals makes the behavior modification seem simpler (for me, as well as my dog.) I am excited after just one class. I can do this. A good teacher helps you to start believing that you can do more with the resources you already have. ~~~ The training facility is in the country on a dirt road (Ellsworth just west of Wagner.) Classes take place in a huge pole barn at the back right corner of the property. The driveway turns to the right. On the website see the Facilities | Map & Directions page for the location and a photo of the driveways & class areas. The driveway splits when it turns the corner, so you ought to know that in order to prevent a logjam on a busy night. There are rubber mats on the floors to give the dogs a grip. There are two training areas: one for agility, another for obedience and other activities that require a lot of open space. There are daytime, evening and weekend classes. There is a restroom. To sign up for a class, go to the website and enter yourself and one or more dogs into the database. You pay online with a credit card. This eliminates the need for an office and lots of paperwork. Just don't use Chrome as your browser. Internet Explorer works. Adele has a YouTube channel, where you'll find examples of concepts introduced in the classes. There is also a Yahoo group to discuss dog training. I am impressed that she is using the available technologies to enhance what the instructors are doing in the classes.

Edit: 6/28/12 Well,…read morethe initial good impression has finally worn off. We have taken our puppy to stay at the Doghouse multiple times now, and every experience gets a little weirder. After her first long stay there, puppy came back to us HUNGRY. This was strange, we had given instructions to let her have extra food if she seemed hungry (we even wrote this on her food tub) since we knew she would be very active running and playing with other dogs and might need more calories. Next stay, she came back to us with her crate full of food. Might explain why she was starving after her first stay, for some reason they crated her to feed her (the crate was provided for her to sleep in at night). Now the final straw, we keep receiving bills and past due notices from them for bills that have already been paid. We always pay our bills on time, and we're getting tired of running back through old credit card statements every time we hear from them. The facility is beautiful, the people who work there seem nice and competent, but our experiences with them are proving otherwise. ***************************** This place is just fantastic! Absolutely beautiful and spotlessly clean facility, wonderful and extremely competent employees. Dogs that come here are expected to be social and have good manners. If you are looking for a place to take your dog for doggie daycare or overnight boarding and you can't stomach the thought of leaving him or her in the care of the underpaid and untrained employees typical at most boarding facilities, you have to check this place out. The focus here is training, discipline, and "earning" increasingly independent "stages" of play. From the first day, I brought my large dog here hoping he would get to run and play to wear out his energy and I let them know we are not interested in graduating to any higher levels, but we would like to board him sometimes. He has not had problems at other day camps, but here, we were constantly getting negative feedback - he's jumping on other dogs or pinning them down, he gets hyped up, he doesn't listen to rules, he barks. That is true. I am not arguing that. But this was later accompanied by requirements to do training, group and individual, in order for him to be able to return -- something from day one I had indicated I was not going to do and did not want - I do not want a stepford wives dog, and I totally understand he's not the right fit for this daycare -- in short, if your dog is not going to thrive in a Montessori school environment this is not for them. The other sole reason I brought my dog here was to check out their boarding facilities when I begin to travel for work again -- again, a no go, because he did not "graduate" to a level that he can board. I've never heard of that in my life -- even the most difficult dogs are boardable at other sites without a single day of "training". I know this has gotten long, but I think its important to know that despite the absolutely beautiful facility, this is not going to be the right place for many dogs. If your dog matches what they are looking for, both you and your dog will absolutely love it. But if your dog just likes to run and play and jump and bark at other dogs then this is not going to be a good match. I would have preferred that he be removed into a solo area and allowed to run around by himself rather than bringing him back to his crate when he got too rowdy. I love the people here, but we're not going back.

After my mother passed, my senior dog with bad hip arthritis also had to go to day care. They kept her in the front lobby away from the more youthful playful dogs, so she was safe from a possible injury. The place has been wonderful and I am not sure I could have keep my dogs without them. I highly recommend this doggy day care.

They have packages for people who want to bundle up days and save money or you can pay by day. They even offer half days (less then 6 hrs). My dog literally runs to the door every single time. He was playing with another animal and received a scratch under his eye. They gave me a call to inform me and they told me they cleaned it and put Neosporin on it. They were more than willing to send me pictures. Everything worked out fine. I can tell that they take care of my dog and he loves it there and I think this is a great facility!

So, we took him to Dan and he has been the best thing to happen to our dobbie. We absolutely love the training he has equipped us to train the dog with no treats or frills. Dan knows dog's psychology so well, he occurs to me as if he's a dog whisperer. He will give you feedback and corrections specific to your dog's behavior along with general commands and training useful to everyone and everyday. Our dog has definite set patterns and can be very stubborn. But as it goes theres no bad dog and only bad training. So, one has to be diligent enough to apply the learnings from the class everyday for the rest of the life of the dog. Been almost 4 weeks and my dogs has started responding exceptionally well. When we took our dobbie for the first time to Dan, I was in awe. It was as if magically Enzo was following everything Dan was asking him to. But here's thing, Dan makes the training look so easy but it's as much a training for you as for the dog. There's so many techniques to learn and apply. Dan has tons of wisdom to share and I absolutely adore Dan's humor. I so regret not getting him sooner to Dan. Nevertheless, it's never too late for anything, certainly not for training your dog right. Bonnie is absolutely fantastic! She tailors her approach to each dog and its owner to ensure the two connect and communicate effectively with each other, which makes ALL the difference in training. I've taking a number of training courses with my dog and worked with various trainers, but this is the first time I've felt there's a fantastic balance between instructing the dog and instructing the human. Oftentimes a trainer excels in one and may lack in the other, but Bonnie and Alternative Canine Training excel at both, which helps owner and dog work better as a team. I highly recommend these courses and these trainers to anyone with a dog, no matter if it's a puppy ready to kick off obedience training or an adult dog that could use a brush up. And added bonus is that the class takes place in a pet store, which may be a little frustrating at first since there's a ton of distractions that your dog is working against, but stick with it and your dog will not only learn how to focus through all those distractions but obedience at home without them will be a cake walk. This training facility is great- for beginners. If you are already in competitions, come here if…read moreyou want to only work on basic skills (which I did advanced beginner). They do not run the games. The trainers I had have not participated in CPE events, which is one of the more common agility trials in Michigan. Also, the behavior of one dog and how the owner handled that dog made me not want to return. I got to the point at one class I almost excused myself and my dog due to the treatment of the owner. As it is not the facility's fault or responsibility to control the dog, they should have excuses him and had him join another class such as an obedience class. To have him continue to come each week when the dog is over-active, disobedient, and the owner has to force the dog to the floor is unacceptable. The dog was screamed at, grabbed, and forced down to the ground. We al discipline our dogs differently, but this made me very uncomfortable. They were very nice trainers, but for me, I choose to go elsewhere.
