My friend's kiddo was a good age, around 3/4 to get what she was doing and appreciate it. Made reservations online since the website said it was recommended. I'm glad I did! Making reservations was very simple, didn't have to put any money down. Parking can be a little congested since it's in a plaza with other places. Walked in and was immediately greeted. Inside is really cool. The theme is all black and white, looks kind of like a cartoonish vibe, and then all of the crafts speak for themselves with colors! There was a birthday party going on in the back. No private rooms for birthday parties. They use different color cones to show your reservation and where you'll be sitting. Was told to look around the store and decide which type of craft we wanted to do. They had a lot of mediums: candles, bead bracelets, painting, mosaics, and decorating different objects with whipped cream gel and adding charms. The last one was definitely the most popular and most unique. Once you pick out your items, you go to the cashier and can either pay ahead of time or wait to pay in case you want to create something more than what you expected. We were told once we pick what we wanted to let staff know and they will tell us next steps. My daughter went with a small brush and we were then given a tray to pick out the charms that we wanted to decorate our brush. There were so many charms! All of them were included in the price but a few were only allowed to use one time once since it was a bigger charm. We were told to only pick out a few charms and can come back for more. Staff said whatever we don't use charm wise, to be sure to put it back where you got it. Unfortunately, there was so many charms, and with how busy and chaotic it was, it was really hard to put them all back. I would definitely recommend only grabbing so many. We were told you get to pick two different whipped cream gel colors. The gel when dry turns into a silicone like texture. When we were done picking our charms and gel, to let them know and they would come back to tell us how to apply and use the whipped cream gels. Unfortunately, two big parties came in and staff had no time for us anymore. We were pretty much on our own. Just winging it, which was a shame when you're spending $25 on a tiny little hairbrush to decorate and have no idea what you're doing. I think it would be better of staff to all at once just tell you what to do along with a demo how it all works rather than constantly having different touch points throughout. My friend and I winged it as much as we could. I definitely don't think we did it right. I noticed a sign that had different pipping tips for the whipped cream gel, again, a bummer we weren't told about this. The charms and beads are all along the wall and right up against the walkway and tables. So it was pretty difficult for people to try to spend time to look at all the charms, but also letting people by and also people are trying to sit in their chairs. Staff then came over and was great with apologizing for us falling to the wayside due to understaffing and the immense parties that came in. Kelly was very sweet and kind and took her time with us and taught us how to reapply the charms if we wanted to. Along with how to use the whipped cream gel. You then have to take a heat gun and dry your creation for about two minutes, but the longer you do it the better it seemed. Be sure to let your creation sit for 24-48 days to really cure. There is a bathroom that single stall in the back. We were bummed that the Photo Booth machine was down, otherwise we would've used it. When you cash out, you're supposed to turn in the receipt to show what you made. Kelly then put our items in a bag and again apologized for our experience and said coming on the weekday is a much better visit. Our reservations were at four, and we didn't think that it would be so busy, so use caution if booking on the weekends. A very cool unique craft place, that I'm sure can sustain itself with the area that it's in. We'll have to come back on a quieter day to really enjoy all that they have to offer. I would've given a 3 star, but if it wasn't for Kelly, taking the extra time with us and apologizing for our initial experience. She made the whole trip much better!

I went as part of a new Meetup group for those of us who want to go to cultural actives with others…read moreand not alone. Wonderful choice for the first event. The art house worked with Maybury State Park to have a group of local artists go for 3 days and produce paintings that shows the beauty and places in the park. Most did 3 or 4 paintings in different type of mediums depending on the artists strengths. The group went to the Live @ 5 Reception that opened the exhibit. Tickets were $35 for non members. Appetizers, 2 drink tickets, and live music from a harpist and a flute player from the Michigan Philharmonic. You also got to look at the art, shop the gift shop, meet some of artists and see the awards given out for the top pieces. A pleasant way to spend part of an evening talking to other art lovers and enjoying a cool summer evening while helping out a local organization that supports the arts. Looking forward to the event in September.

Viewing the exhibit is free of charge but donations are welcomed. The current exhibit is "Art That Pushes Boundaries" featuring the work of local artists. In addition to the exhibit, I noticed that a painting canvas kit was available for donation. The art house offers in-person classes including visual art training. Wouldn't it be nice if every town had an art house with exhibits and art education programs like this one? This is a wonderful community resource and I will be stopping by whenever there is a new exhibition.

After having a less than great time with another daycare down the road, we moved both of our sons here. They were 1.5 and 3 at the time, and have since stayed on for another 3 years. We have continually had amazing teachers who work incredibly hard to give 1:1 attention to kids that have different personalities, learning styles, and education levels. There are separate rooms for all different age groups, and they are constantly refreshing stations and activities while staying core to a rigorous and well-researched curriculum. The teachers keep track of the progress of each kid not just personally but through a digital tool that makes for some really productive parent teacher conferences twice a year. I feel spoiled. They love volunteers. They encourage parent feedback. They do science and art and reading and fun summer activities. They aren't just good, they are constantly looking for ways to improve, stay close to parents, keep the staff happy, and the kids excelling. They have flexible plans for payment and even shuttle before and after care to the local elementaries. Did I mention Parent's Night Out once a month, where they take your kids for a few extra hours so you can get a date night, while your kids watch movies in pajamas? Group trips to the local apple orchard? Breakfast with Santa? Water fun days in the summer? Ongoing classroom science experiments? I don't even know how to capture all the amazing in one review.

I'll definitely be visiting Bees in the D in person once the coronavirus gets under control. I was so excited to see this virtual event being offered and let me tell you, Brian and Jeff did…read morenot disappoint! From hearing about the story behind where the bees are located to getting into the hive, this virtual event was the bees knees! I must admit that growing up and even still I have been afraid of yellow jackets, as I learned to distinguish. The past couple years as I have learned about honey bees and their near extinction, I found myself losing that fear. Listening to Brian explain all the different kinds of bees in a hive and the difference between bees and wasps really helped ease my fears. I have to say the bee keeper suit is a major perk to the biz if you ask me. It was so neat to see all the stages of the hive as Brian got deeper into each box. I could not believe all the aspects of the hive we were able to see! If I were a bee keeper I would just be out there eating any honey from the first box! I cannot believe there are 30-50 lbs of honey that each hive needs to sustain themselves and how hard they work year around. I too feel like I need 30-50 lbs of honey to keep me going! I loved hearing Brian talk about how different hives have different temperaments. Makes sense but definitely not something I had thought about! I appreciate Brian and Jeff taking the time to educate us all and do it so well. Brian is fantastic! I wish I lived closer so I could attend a honey and mead tasting! I feel weird writing a review, as I took one class here (millinery), and they do so much. You can…read moremake brooms, felt a custom pair of slippers, do blacksmithing, even make a longbow. (Or you can do more typical crafty things like ceramics, or learn to use your sewing machine.) They're part of the county park district, and the breadth of classes they offer is amazing. Prices are reasonable and supplies are included. The mission (from their website) is: "The Michigan Folk School is committed to creating a community engaged in authentic, hands-on experiences through the teaching and sharing of traditional folk arts, crafts, music, and skills in an inspiring natural setting and to promote the preservation of forest and farmland." They do, and how. Anyway, I crossed two state lines to take a one-day millinery class (hatmaking), offered a couple of times a year either as two evenings or a full day. There aren't a lot of places that teach millinery, and while it was more basic than a class I took elsewhere, that other location has moved to Kentucky, and beggars can't be choosers. If I hadn't taken that other class I wouldn't have known about some things that were simplified (we didn't apply sizing; the brim edges weren't stitched; barbed elastic cord wasn't available; I don't think we curved the petersham ribbon for the sweatbands; no one made a hat with a separate brim and crown...). Everyone, including me, left with a felt hat we'd made ourselves that we were happy with, including people who knew zilch about hatmaking when they came in. Teacher was very helpful, sending out suggestions ahead of time and instructions on how to measure our heads in additon to asking what color and type of hat we wanted to make so she could bring it. She provided a good introduction, an idea book, and had enough tools to keep us all productive and happy, and was super patient. Bringing your own sewing supplies is helpful but not required - I was happy to have a couple of needles, a needle threader and scissors just so I didn't have to wait for them. There's time for lunch while your hat dries (they're formed with steam); honestly, the two-evening class is probably a better option if you're local. Nice selection of hat blocks; do some research and do some thinking ahead of time. You may want to bring your own trim if you have something specific in mind (feathers? a particular type of ribbon or floral trim?), since the teacher brought some but the stock isn't deep and is brought in special. I made a pillbox hat and if I were doing this again, I would have asked about elastic or googled "barbed elastic cord for hats" and spent $5 on some before coming. The teacher suggested I braid thin elastics which works but having taken the other class I know "there's an app for that" and wish I'd planned ahead. The directions about where to go onsite which they provided ahead of time were helpful, but do allow extra time to get here if you haven't been before; it's outside of town, located on a farm.
