During his years of experience, he amassed a great understanding of the New York city real estate market and is able to tell you every nuance about a particular neighborhood, building, and management company. He used that knowledge to find me the BEST apartment! As soon as we started working with him, he invited my fiance and I to his office to sit down and discuss our budget, neighborhoods for young couples like us, friendly people, and other criteria we wanted in the apartment. He quickly put together a list of rental options that were in our budget and were couple-friendly. Most importantly, he was able to show us apartments that weren't even publicly available yet, so we were the first to see them. After he showed us 2-3 units, we found the nicest unit with the greatest view of the water and the city in the heart of Hell's Kitchen. It was slightly out of our budget but because of his prior experience with the particular building manager, he was able to negotiate the monthly rental rate to an amount within our budget! Like that right there feels weird!! The broker also mentioned not to call my bank to get my money back either.. It was mentioned, If i qualify it will be used as a down payment towards the fees.. but still. I personally wasn't comfortable with giving $1k for an "application". Like i have never heard of this.. especially this day in age. if it looks like a scam, feels like a scam... ITS A SCAM!
