This is the best Japanese and sushi restaurant in Hobart. Affordable, healthy, tasty and the atmosphere is incredible. 4/5

Kobe Japanese Restaurant - This water was the best part of my meal.

Excuse me, Kobe, but I'm a little bit in love with you…read more I first stuck my head in here on the way home from a dentist appointment because I needed a bit of cheering up after that horror, and because I recalled seeing someone online raving about the ramen noodles being handmade, and Kobe being the only place they'd come across so far in Hobart who go to such care. Well! On walking in the door, the loveliest older pair of staff welcomed me so kindly, I almost considered asking for a hug (pls remember, dental trauma). Instead I took a seat at the table I was escorted to, and then eyeballed the menu for longer than I care to admit, waging a war within myself. I came in with the intent of eating the ramen, but all I wanted once I saw chicken katsu don was chicken katsudon. I suddenly and urgently missed the days of hanging out at Hanaichi in Brisbane with my heart friends. So I got the chicken katsudon, with hearty encouragement from the lovely older lady, because it's her favourite. IT WAS SO DELICIOUS. It's like a comfort food is back in my life and I'm so, so happy about it. Have I been back already? I sure have. The second time, I stuck to my guns and had the Kobe ramen. It was also delicious, hearty and messy (like all good ramen should be). Now all I need to do is never stop visiting. The layout is a bit strange, being in the ground floor of some kind of short-stay apartment building, with entrances to the accommodation in the middle of the restaurant (which I guess once just served as a foyer but has now been farmed out). I suppose if anything, I hope Kobe gets the chance to move locations and find somewhere they fit a bit more comfortably. But if they're comfortable here, then I'll get comfortable here, too. As long as nobody takes my katsudon away from me.

One thing going for this place is that it has much longer hours than the other eateries that keep…read moreshort operating hours in Hobart's central business district. That's maybe one of the only redeeming qualities. Enticed by the thought of a warm bowl of ramen to soothe my soul, I ordered a veggie ramen for take-away at this ramen-focused establishment. Once I got back to my hotel room, I nestled in to enjoy the warming bowl of broth and veggies but I was sorely disappointed to find that the taste of the soup was a little foul and the hard boiled eggs were of a strange color and consistency. After a few bites, I just couldn't eat anymore, concerned that the suspicious tasting food might actually make me ill. This full rejection of a meal rarely happens to me, especially with a fairly easy meal of ramen. I would not return to this place to try my luck again.

I don't know what happened, but we thought we were up for a nice bowl of ramen tonight. Looking at…read morethe menu it looked a bit funny, but we figured with the good reviews it might be one of those places that are actually surprisingly good. As we got the food, it looked a lot worse than the photos suggested, but still, you might be mistaken. Then we had a few bites, and actually all of the food tasted funky (not in a good way) and dodgy, as though it was last months batch. I had the duck, and my girlfriend had the fried chicken (only edible thing we had), and we mainly just left without eating. I hate giving bad reviews, but I simply can't remember the last time I had such a shit dinner. I hope they change their way soon!

They are a very compact little restaurant serving Japanese food lunch-times Monday to Friday and are well worth the visit. The prices were very good (~ $14 per main course) and the food was really tasty. The menu includes a lot of your typical dishes - sushi, ngiri, tempura, udon, teriyaki, etc. The service is friendly and fast and did I mention the food was TASTY? Really happy we went out of our way to try this new place and I would definitely recommend it for anyone seeking a Japanese lunch fix.

There's a special that changes every couple of weeks--keep an eye on RIN's Facebook page for these specials if you want to know what treats you might be in for, or cross your fingers for a surprise. RIN takes bookings if you want to dine in of an evening, and if there are more than around two of you then I suggest you do this, because it's an adorable little space that's easily filled, especially as word gets around about the fresh sashimi and the adorable staff. I'm definitely a fan of both. They don't even blink when I pop in for dinner at 8:30pm, which means they're a winner as far as I'm concerned.
