The Oval Staircase is 1 of 2 in the US and is an amazing experience to go down from the top! 99% of all the Gorgeous Antiques are not original to the house owners, but are Extremely Fine rare pieces found in Museums and high end Galleries. Ward Hall is privately run and is in great need of donations for its Upkeep. It's still one of the Most Beautiful Mansions I've ever visited and I highly recommend touring. It was designed for Senator John Pope of Kentucky. We toured this property by making an appointment with the Bluegrass Trust. They were great about working with us so we could see this unique piece of history. The home changed hands through the years until it eventually got cut up into multiple apartments for student housing. It eventually experienced a fire, which led to the Bluegrass Trust being able to purchase it. This is a way to see preservation and restoration in action. The trust has very slowly and painfully, over time, first worked to ensure the property was safe and at least stable. And now they are slowly working to restore it a little bit at a time. This is truly a labor of love, with members of the trust taking turns mowing the lawn, cleaning up plaster, doing small projects. And budgets are tight, so every contribution helps. Tours are a steal at 10 dollars, so pay more if you can. Great way to learn about history, architecture, previous lifestyles, restoration. Gorgeous photo ops. Not every item was original to the Todd or Lincoln families, but everything was period appropriate and helped tell the story. The artifacts weren't just on display. They became part of the narrative, which made it all the more engaging. What surprised me most was how much the visit made me reflect on grief ... her profound losses, her perseverance, and the emotional weight she carried as First Lady during the Civil War. Made of brick covered by limestone to match the Capitol building. Put on National Register of Historical Places in 1972. The first Governor's mansion is located downtown and built in 1798. There is a formal garden with fountain, very BEAUTIFUL in the spring and summer...definitely going back then to check it out. The current mansion took 2 yrs to build and cost $75,000 to build. Governor James B McCreary and his family were the first to live there. He was the 27th and 37th Governor of Kentucky. It is a tradition when the new Governor and family moves in to the home, they are greeted with a country ham, biscuits and a white cake...thus is a traditional meal for decades. The mansion was inspired with French influences by architect CC and EA Weber. While it did have a lot of graffiti, I'm glad I checked it out and gave my dog a different scenery to explore. If you're a history buff, it's worth detouring here because it's quite unusual to see a relic like this elsewhere. It's secluded enough to offer privacy yet inviting enough for the public to check out. Although my visit was short, it certainly was worthwhile.

The Switzer Covered Bridge is the official state covered bridge of Kentucky. The bridge formerly carried Kentucky route 1262 across North Elkhorn Creek. It is a 120 foot long Howe truss design and was replaced by a concrete bridge that now carries the traffic. A few folks were here enjoying the slow moving creek as a watering hole and swimming spot. There are some picnic tables and it's a nice shady spot away from too many people.
