The cellar

Ward Hall is a beautiful, not completely restored Greek Revival home located in Georgetown. I visited Ward Hall on Memorial Day of last year with my mother. This historic home is not open every day, so be sure to check the website for their open dates and times. Our guide was an older gentleman who has lived in the area since he was a child, so he had a great perspective on the history of the home. I loved his stories about a previous tour guide from years ago and the misinformation that she used to spread! He took his time sharing information about the house and the family who lived there and was a great storyteller. It was fascinating to me to visit an unrestored house of this time period. The other historic homes that I have visited in this area have all been restored, so seeing one "in progress" was different and cool. We went all the way from the top story to the basement where the kitchen was located.

So here on the property of what is now operated by the Georgia-Pacific company, where they manufacture Dixie Cups, they've made their water tower in the shape of a giant Dixie Cup. It's cute and you can't miss it. You can see it from two sides. One is the YRC Freight parking lot at 444 Transport Court (public property) and the other is along this semi-private road that leads into the GP factory at 451 Harbison Road. Where the Sun is will determine which one works better for you. You can stop at either location, but I would not recommend sticking around for too long. [Review 13483 overall, 802 of 2020.]

The walking tour is accessible to people of most abilities, with a bit of uneven ground in some spots. Cool, comfortable temperatures. (Maybe have a light sweater.) Cool/interesting history of how the carven transitioned from a massive limestone mining facility that started in the 1930s, to its multiple uses today. The zip-lining looks like a lot of fun, but that was not for us on this day.

We thought that meant that you'd be exploring and ziplining all through the cavern, but no. It's a ropes course, and the course is pretty small, and you're not really going into the cavern, which is a bummer. They do have a separate zipline tour, which is maybe more adventurous, but I wouldn't know because we didn't do that one. The ropes course is for ages 5 and older. Louisville Mega Cavern also offers a walking cavern tour and a tram tour, plus a drive-through Christmas lights display around the holidays. Be sure to book your activities in advance! This place is very popular and gets very busy. One thing to note is that outside food and drink are supposedly not allowed. (Oops, my bad. I didn't find that out until I had finished my tasty little tuna-and-crackers snack.) They also have lockers to put your things in if you don't have someone hanging back at the tables to hold your stuff.

Lexington is notable for having a…read morerelative lack of urban sprawl, with zoning laws ensuring that much of the city is surrounded by rolling hills covered with farms. The outskirts of the city are very pretty to drive through, but you can't really do much as the farms are privately owned and there isn't much in the way of parks or trails. Enter this paved pathway, which runs from the city proper out to the horse center. It seems geared towards bikers, which I am not, but there was certainly space for pedestrians and I saw a few others. I visited a section that ran by some university-owned test farms, and got a treat with nice views, ample songbirds, and peace and quiet. I did get mobbed by some sort of fly as it got dark; though it did not seem to be of any biting or stinging variety you definitely want to consider repellent, along with something for pollen allergies and some sunscreen. The entire length of the trail is farther than I could walk on one night, but I suspect it will be well worth exploring, as this is exactly the sort of thing Lexington needs.

Upon entering the barn style store, we noticed very quickly how the inside was clean and staff were friendly. We got a few things to try at home like the fudge and doughnuts. We were 3 adults and a toddler, thankfully we paid a reduced price to enter the activity area because only the toddler did anything & it was too cold / wet to do most of the activities. They have several options for hard cider on tap as well as a variety of food options. We took a hay ride and attempted the corn maze. There's a store with so many different products for purchase. Apples, cider, donuts, jams/jellies, honey, spices, baking mixes, and so many more. I was surprised at all the things they offered. For family fun there's a play area with slides and other kid friendly activities. Admission and parking are free. You pay for any activities that you would like to participate in. A great way to spend a Fall day.

We gathered with the other guests, warming up in the office before heading out. For us humans, the weather was a bit much, but the horses absolutely loved it. One thing that really impressed me was how interactive the experience was. We weren't limited to standing behind a fence--we were able to feed the horses carrots and admire them up close. It made the visit feel personal and unforgettable. About halfway through, we stopped in the barn to watch a short film about the farm's history and mission--an informative (and very welcome!) break from the snow. Afterward, we ventured back out to meet the remaining horses. Despite the chilly weather, we had a wonderful time. If you love animals or just want a unique, heartfelt experience, this tour is absolutely worth it.
