I purchased 2 hose fittings for a total of about $30. I needed different ones from what I currently…read moreowned so I was sort of flying blind. Of course, when I got them home and took them out of the package, they were the wrong size. I took them along with my receipt back to the store the same day. The plastic shell covering the fittings was still intact and the only evidence there was that I had ever removed them was the slit down one side of each package where I detached the plastic from the cardboard backing. I was told that I couldn't return them because they had been opened?!?! They were clearly not damaged and I just wanted to trade them for the correct size. Nope. I threw them on the counter and left. I will never go back. No one in my family will ever go back. Disgustingly poor customer service from a hometown business. I'm equally close to an Ace hardware so if I need to, I'll go there. In the meantime, I logged on to Amazon and purchased BOTH FITTINGS for $7 and received them the next day. People like to complain about how superstores like Amazon and Walmart are ruining small business, but when I tried to support a small business I was treated like dirt. The funnier thing is 2 days later I went to Autozone trying to match a fuse and the employee helping me tore open a package in the same way I had at True Value and she discovered it was the wrong fuse she just taped it up and put it back. Shame on you True Value in Tell City, Indiana. You give ALL True Value locations a bad name.

"Charlie, we have a saw, just cut we in half" Another real conversation, "do you carry cedar?" "Nope, we all out" "not even one board, I just need a 10' piece" "yeah we got some" "ok, could you show me where it is?" "Follow me" Everything is covered in loads of dust. BUT, even though it is a different location, 84 Lumber is the exact same company I remember growing up (was a different location but identical inside... nostalgia!) While the guy working there was not helpful and should probably be fired, they had my wood and brought back memories with grandpa.

A contractor friend of mine suggested I try 84 Lumber for some lu.ber needs which I needed for a roofing job. WOW!!! I am now a fan of 84 Lumber. Ben was SUPER cordial and helpful first thing I. The morning as we pulled in at the crack of dawn. He gave me a military discount and let me know their price for the lumber I needed was the same as Lowes, only at a grade stop above in quality. They also have a designated parking space for wounded Veterans near the front door which I thought was very nice for those who deserve it. It appears 84 Lumber has more lumber than anyone else and they will help you load it if you like. Thank you, Ben for being a great asset of 84 Lumber. I appreciated the friendly and professional service I received when I came in the door right after they opened.

Look, I'll be frank: short of literally lighting me on fire during my recent visit, I wouldn't have…read morea negative word to say about this place (see explanation in the TL, below) Not that they did light me on fire - their staff was actually completely pleasant and helpful. The TL:DR is: I recommend. Let me explain: the house I live in was built before Etown became the thriving metropolis (looks at the ground, sprains both eyes, and snorts) visitors see today, not quite Little House on the Bluegrass - era, but well before Lowes or Home Depot were local options, or ordering anything custom via the interwebs (gasp!!) was a thing. When the second owner went to finish the basement, they (apparently) couldn't find trim to match the timeless, but distinctive pattern already in the house, so they picked a fairly boring option that could do double duty as baseboard and door trim. They also picked a heinous 90's color to paint it all. Eeeeuuuuuuchk! So when I was looking to change the color scheme, I considered just replacing the crappy, ugo trim entirely, rather than spend the next six months trying to prime and paint basement baseboards and door trim without painting basement floors, walls, and caulk. I went hunting for places that sold trim & moldings back in the 80's in the area, discovering none of the usual suspects could help me. I wound up (after a fair number of fruitless visits to small suppliers from Etown to Hodgenville, Springfield, and Leitchfield) at Tapp & Sons (hey, I started with lumberyards). It was all about the caulk, don'cha know?.. Kidding. Tapp & Sons may not have the most welcoming appearance on 31W for customers who aren't contractors / builders who deal with them regularly, let alone foot traffic; they are, in fact, open to the public. Prices were fair for product, service was good. It was all old school. Product perfectly matches that extant from about thirty years ago, from baseboards, corners, dental molding & cornices to multi-piece trim around doors and around windows to assemble and install at home. My home improvement heroes!
