When I came in, the office staff barely spoke to me. By the time the nurse came around, I was…read morealready anxious. I let her do her tests, BP and weight, and we went to the room. She took my history, but it felt very scattered like the order of the questions wasn't mapped out or she was unsure of them. When the doctor came in, he shook hands and we started to talk. He asked what nationality I was, which I found strange, but I told him Eastern European and Middle Eastern. He went on with the appointment. I was asked very few questions, and as soon as I mentioned that my stomach issues are worse with anxiety, it was suggested that I have my psych meds adjusted. There were no questions about what my history was there or if there was a reason I was on the dose I was, just that they should be adjusted until I had no symptoms of anxiety. (Good luck considering I have a diagnosed anxiety disorder.) I was then told that I needed to take Lactaid if I was going to ingest lactose and that lactose hid in different things. I agreed, then the doctor went on to list foods. Many foods. Many of which were pretty self explanatory i.e. Mac and Cheese. I just nodded, trying not to cut him off, but the way it was explained was as though I was a small child who didn't understand anything of my condition and hadn't already spent hours upon hours researching lactose intolerance and stomach issues. I have been dealing with stomach and intestinal issues since I was a child and have suffered extensively as an adult, losing time at work and having considerable pain due to them. In this appointment I was treated as though I knew nothing of my condition, had no agency in the treatment of it, and I just needed more psych meds. Going to the GI was a big deal for me. I detest going to the doctor. It sets off my anxiety and OCD in a big way, but because the symptoms had become so intense the past few years, I finally gave in and went. I sincerely regret the decision to go to Dr. Samir Patel at Silver Cross and hope that I can find a doctor who will a.) listen and b.) help.
