Communication about scheduling was easy and the price was good. My 2 girls had very different levels of skill in riding and Wayne was able to assess which horses would suit their personalities. In addition, he taught them a few tips about horseback riding even though we were only requesting a trail ride. The tack room was impeccably organized. The humidity of Bloomington made the shaded trail rides both refreshing and invigorating for the girls. Each morning they rushed towards the barn for their ride and after each outing they came back happy, looking forward to playing with the old and young dogs who room to round the barn. We arrived early to beat the heat, which I recommend for everyone. The young staff member who got our horses ready and made sure we were comfortable did a great job. At other riding stables, my ankles have really hurt as I've ridden, but at Grandpa Jeff's, the stirrups were positioned so that my ankles were extremely comfortable. We did the stable tour, which is an option for people who like to interact with horses from a…read moredistance, but don't necessarily need to ride them. The stable tour is less than an hour, and you get to meet some of the friendly horses that call the stables at French Lick Resort their home. The first part of the tour included one of the stable staff bringing the horses up to us for us to pet. Horse hair is so soft, yet so coarse! The horses they brought up to us were gentle and tame, so we didn't have to worry about a horse getting spooked and bolting, or a horse kicking anyone in the head (just stay away from their rear legs). Then, we were shown around the stables and could see where the horses slept and were tended to. We even got to meet the smallest horse in the stable: Pepsi! To be honest, I don't especially like horses because I feel like they're unpredictable creatures, but I felt completely at ease doing the stable tour. It was a fun and educational bonus to our visit to French Lick!

Anyone under 18 that can control a horse can ride but they must have a helmet. The horses are well behaved and are very mild mannered for those that might be timid. The campgrounds are excellent, especially Taylor Ridge. But be aware that you need to make reservations ahead of time, especially if you are planning a fall camping trip. Campsites sell out early. Shower rooms are decent, not wonderful. But satisfactory for a campground. Quiet hours are strictly observed, and the park rangers will pay a visit to your campsite if you aren't quiet after 10:00 pm Once we received a visit from a friendly park ranger when we were playing cards around 11 pm. We hadn't realized that we were being noisy at all but the ranger advised us that sound carries throughout the campground. Hiking trails range from easy to moderate. Trail maps are available are the trails are well marked. You will likely see deer and raccoons when hiking the trails. Some members of our group enjoy mountain biking too.

Went back after 10 years and I didn't recognize the saddle barn area. Not cleaned up from trails…read morecoming in or going out, manure pile is the first thing you pass going in, what once was grass and fence in the pony track isn't anymore, and only the ponies were saddled, not the trail horses. One of the owners wasn't dressed to ride if needed (meaning in a jumper not jeans) and if barn is off limits, which the aisle was cluttered anyway, it should be roped off until needing to pass through with a horse. Previous operator ran 80 trail horses and a dozen ponies and it was always kept in great shape and clean for visitors, horse owner always ready to lead a trail and horses ready with plenty of hay in the racks of the pens. Very disappointed that it is allowed to look like that. Only good thing was there was mounting steps but the location and permanent look questionable. The horses and ponies looked good.

We've stayed there for weekends and short stays in a slew of different campers and RVs, as well as coming for day trips where we would set up a cookout at the reservable building across from the swimming beach.
