Found this place by accident. We went here for my daughters birthday as she has a love for her horses. This was her and her friends first time riding. Brian was an amazing guide. Very helpful and informative. We will definitely be coming here again and again. We all loved everything about the people and horses. Our guide was Vickie. She was very friendly and knowledgeable about horses and the area. My husband, myself and 11 and 13 year old went on a ride. This is the ONLY stable in the area that will do more than just a walk. (I called both the stable in Brown County State Park as well as Grandpa Jeff's.) We trotted...my kids loved it. My 11 year old giggled the entire time we trotted. It was a great time! read more

I heard about this place from a friend, and it is hands down the *best* horseback riding venue in the area. I've already been there twice, one walk/trot ride, and another walk/trot/canter ride. It is also reasonably priced; probably the least expensive horseback riding stable I've come across! And this is saying a lot, considering I'm a grad student at IU, and I don't have much expendable income. You can choose an hour ($25), an hour and a half (more expensive), or two hours (most expensive). You can also have a walk ride, or a run ride. Make sure to make a reservation so they know you're coming. I only had one issue with this business, and it was after I had made a reservation for five people at 5pm. (the problem was promptly solved in two days) I got there 20 minutes early with my friends, as the website instructs, and waited there until 5:05pm. No one came. This made sense because it was raining that day, but I would have appreciated a call from someone beforehand, as they already had my name down for a reservation, and someone there had told me the day before that they would still ride even if there was rain. But no worries! Because this problem was cleared up when I spoke to Luke. He was kind enough to issue my friend and I a five dollar discount (each) for the lack of communication on their end. Both times, I had wonderful rides through Yellow Wood State Forest, and it was cool to get to meet the two cats and the four dogs that live at the farm. The guides are very helpful (I had Luke the first time, and a different volunteer the second time) and really friendly. They treat you like a guest, and really try to get to know you. I'm moving out of the area in a few days, but when I visit Bloomington again, I will probably stop by this place, since it is only about 15 minutes away from Btown. Go! It's an awesome experience, and very worth the money. read more

Beautiful ride! We drove down from Indy to do a weekend 11am ride. I took my girls (ages 3 & 5). I rode double with the 3 year old and they let the 5 year old ride her own slow, gentle, horse (she's gone riding a few times, but this was the first by herself). The trail was gorgeous and like nothing we'd ever done before. We did the hour long ride up and down ridges, alongside a creek, deep in the beautiful forest decorated in fall colors. The staff is incredibly friendly, accommodating and knowledgeable. Great family fun! read more

This is by far the best horse riding stable in the central Indiana area (and it is 2 hours or so south of Indy). Loved going through the forest. Loved the little trotting areas. Staff was friendly. My son was a first time rider and had a fun time. read more

This was a great ride, especially the canter and running bit. Our guide Tori was very nice and informative. The scenery is gorgeous and you really can't beat the price . Our only complaint would be that one of the ranch hands talked us out of the run ride, and also another ranch hand was shirtless with lots of face tattoos and was yelling at my husband asking what horse he was on. The owner did tell him that nobody had told my husband his horse yet. So overall I highly recommend. read more

So happy we stopped by! My sister and I were welcomed immediately and were offered to spend some time feeding the horses with apples that we picked from a nearby tree, to the horses' delight. Dont go. Probably the rudest man I ever met. Their web site says reservatons are not required except from December through February. We arrived 08/19/11 for the 11:00am first scheduled ride. The guide literally kicked dirt and tossed paperwork when he found out we were there for a ride. Said we'd have to wait another hour for him to saddle four horses (Although there were plenty already saddled - a family of four were the only other riders) or come back at 1:00. He was so hateful to us in his voice and his actions. We definately did not feel welcome. We chose to leave rather than spend time on a trail with him and give him $150 plus tips for ill treatment. We left Schooner Valley Stables and went to the saddle barn at Brown County Park. Everyone there was nice and pleasant and we had a very enjoyable ride. I'd say don't chance your luck with Schooner Valley Stables. Play it safe and go to Brown County Park. read more

Me, my best friend and her daughter age 6 drove down from Indy wanting to ride horses. We picked this one because(bc) we saw that it had five stars over the others. When we pulled up we were greeted by one of the Family owners Luke. He apologized bc he didn't have any open rides available and that we really needed to make a reservation online or by phone. Not wanting to send our lil buckaroo away empty handed he asked if she wanted to see some of the horses that don't often go out on trails but still love pets and rubs from friendly people. He was very hospitable, kind, and joking. We got to see several horses who for one reason or another tend to stay behind but loved and adored a good rub behind the ears. Luke even put the little one (with permission from her mom) on one of his old horses bareback and let her take a lap at the horses leisure around the small space. We were very thrilled and our smiles lasted all day. We offered him money or donations and he said to only come back again. We definitely will and I want all out there to know of this great FAMILY owned place. This man did not have to take the time to make a six year old smile as she stuffed her my lil pony stuffed animal in her shirt so she could ride a horse but he did. Ok first know I fully understand the inherent dangers of horseback riding but I still have a problem with the prfessionalism of this stable. My 21 yr old sister was bucked off her horse near the end of the ride for no apparent reason. She fell to the ground on her back and immediately screamed. The guide refused to let anyone off their horse to help her, then when she finally called for assistance 2 men came and told her to "just get up". One bragged about how many times he had been kicked and bucked off horses. She couldnt get up because of the pain. They used a 2x8 as a backboard and to lay her the bed of the truck. One man then offered her asprin and Gin and a solution to her pain. DO NOT RIDE HERE! They have you sign a waiver taking away your rights and it allows them to act like morons and have no safety requirements or standards for injured riders. read more

My family and I went horse back riding over spring break. It was the best part of our trip to Brown County, Our guide, Luke, was awesome. He went way above and beyond to accomidate my 14 yr old son who has cerebal palsy. My 3 yr old nephew was also allowed to ride a horse with his mom (not allowed at the state park).
