Mighty Fine Guitars is unquestionably the most humane, civilized guitar shop I have ever seen. Soft spoken owner Stevie Coyle is an amazing guitarist of considerable renown himself (Google him) and he has stocked his shop with an incredible selection of handmade, acoustic guitars from the finest builders around. Common, production instruments such as those from even high quality builders like Martin are an anomaly at Mighty Fine Guitars. The majority of Stevie's stock consists of extremely limited production and one-off guitars personally built by the craftspeople who have their name on the headstock. These are high-end instruments running generally in the $2000-$12000 range. The very quiet shop itself is a comfortably sized room next door to a traditional music store in the suburban bedroom community of Lafayette. Stevie is as vintage and cool as the guitars that surround him. I was just browsing around and left the shop a few thousand dollars lighter but with a sweet sounding vintage Martin under my arm. We have some great guitar shops in the Bay Area, and they are all pretty awesome. Mighty Fine is my favorite by far. The owner, Stevie, is someone who can give you a lot of feedback and great advice. He's also so down to earth even though he's a great concert guitarist himself. (I've never taken lessons from him, but I'm tempted to when I have more time!) Imagine the best environment for a high end guitar shop possible. It would be nice low lighting, great places to sit, a single room with lots of fine guitars hanging/easily accessible, and no bother whatsoever from others. Stevie helps and supports, but never pushes. Other guests/visitors are great people and I've met some awesome people here like Jay Howlett, famed for his stash of "The Tree" guitar backs and sides. Nothing like a superstore (Guitar Center anyone?). Low pressure to sell except for the sheer greatness of the guitar tones. No one is here to impress or lounge around. It's a great community, people are respectful, and even when it's crowded, there is the auditorium in back to use. That's Mighty Fine Guitars in a nutshell. Stevie allows people to take guitars on "sleepover" to see if they're a great fit. He listens to how you play and can make recommendations if you want them. I love working with him. He makes time even when he's really busy like setting up for one of his very awesome Friday night concerts. (great guitarists visit regularly!) I have nothing bad to say and have played guitars from Ryan, Applegate, Langejans, Doerr, Leach, Hamblin, Michaud, Lowden, Yamamoto, and Fujii, to name a few, here. A Mighty Fine Guitar Studio! Stevie Coyle, the owner is a fantastic person! His passion is music and guitars and it shows in this business. Actually, it's more like an art gallery! If you are in the market for a high end guitar, this is the place to go. Even if you don't live in the East Bay, it's worth the trip... If you just want to look at some beautiful instruments, it's still worth a visit. Stevie is friendly and will not try to sell you. I brought my old guitar there for Stevie to inspect and "tune up" with new strings if needed. When I picked up the guitar the following week, he just handed it back to me saying that the strings did not need replacing. How cool was that? The owner, Stevie Coyle, is delightful, honorable, knowledgable, and is so passionate about finding his gorgeous high end guitars good homes-- it's almost as if he's a matchmaker. Once he knows how you play and what your budget is, he is an expert at pointing out which specific guitars in his astonishing inventory might be a perfect match for you. I have been there 3 times-- on my second visit the place was packed with a charming collection of guitarists playing individually, in twosomes, in threesomes, chatting with each other, comparing notes (no pun intended) and, basically, having the time of their lives. There is a warm and welcoming "living room" that offers many armless seating options in an elegant but very comfortable setting. This place is, without a doubt, the coolest and most welcoming hang-out for musicians and wannabes. I have the impression you could just drop by anytime and, each time you did, you wouldn't leave for several hours. We need to get Mighty Fine Guitars classified as a MUSIC VENUE as well. At least one other review mentioned the great concerts Stevie bills for his wonderful venus behind the guitar shop. It's the best kept secret in the county let alone Lafayette. Stevie gets the word out primarily via his email list and website. Most of the concerts are attended primarily by Stevie's guitar nut friends. If the wider public knew about this venue and the outrageous quality of the performers, it could be swamped. I'd hate to see it overrun, but I definitely want to see more full chairs. I'm immensely grateful to Stevie for sharing his music with us through these shows. read more
