I had thought I submitted a review of Mike Hallett Fencing back in March when they came out, but better late than never. We got estimates from about half a dozen fence contractors, and the quality of the estimates varied considerably. One was not much more than a dollar figure written on a napkin. Amy came out from Mike Hallett Fencing and gave us a fairly complete estimate, and while she was inspecting the site, she made several recommendations WRT our desired construction. We needed about 175' of a shared property fence, plus 60' or so on another side. Not only was Amy's estimate one of the lowest, but her knowledge and professionalism made me confident that Mike Hallett was the way to go. Because of the size of the job (two fence runs), the project had to be done over two days. When the first day of installation came, a crew showed up on time and ready to rock and roll. There were six or seven guys, and they all knew their job and got to work immediately. We had removed the existing fence, but they had to dig out the post anchors. Less than 7 hours later, we had a 7-food privacy fence, and they hauled off the old fencing materials to boot. The second day was even faster than the first. They encountered unanticipated challenges, finding some buried concrete at a post location, but solved it with some ingenuity and good ol' fashioned muscle. The fence looks great. The price was higher than we hoped to pay, but we understand that COVID really hammered supply chains and drove the cost of materials up, so we don't begrudge Mike Hallett Fencing for that - their price was competitive with the other estimates we received. Their service and installation, though, will put them at the top of our list when we need any additional fence work. read more

My neighbors used this inferior company to install fencing. Some of their fencing extended into my back yard. The owner Mike Hallet and his daughter Amy do not have a care in the world for quality work. Their crew have zero customer service skills and are merely concerned with getting the fence up in any way, shape or form. Although I did not pay for this company to do any work for me, I still am forced to look at their shoddy work in the corner of my backyard. Do yourself a favor Mike, retire! Take Amy with you! I had Mike install a new gate and replace a fallen fence. The fence was good. The gate was a disaster. The workmanship on the inside the gate was like a beginner would have done. The gate latch does not stay closed. Big blocks of left over wood cuts to support the gate. I called Mike and told him I was disappointed with gate and he said he would send someone out to fix things but never did. They are good at fences but fail at a gate. read more

The work done was very good and his crew even put the River rocks back which wasn't their responsibility.The work was a little pricey but we were happy with the end result. I and lowering mikes rating because of the following phone call with him. I called mike back and asked him to give me an estimate for a small job (two new 4x4's installed) to repair fence that was beginning to fall . Mike flat out said the job was too small and he did not want to do it. Really, just a few months after I spent two grand on a fence ! Excellent fencing company. The first time we hired it was a few years back when we installed our pool. And for information that was about 13 years ago and fence still looking awesome and standing strong even with years of large dogs jumping on it. Now our other side fence was ready for replacement. I hired Mike Hallett Fencing to replace a 29-ft fence that I share with a neighbor, as it was beyond repair and about 25 years old. He seemed nice enough at first and the proposal appeared fair, so both homeowners accepted his bid and the work was done on 5/2. None of the paperwork received stated cash or check payment terms only. When the fence was completed and I was given my bill, I advised his crew that I was going to call Mr. Hallett to pay for it. They informed me that he didn't accept credit card payments and stated that they wished he'd tell people that. Apparently, this is not a new Hallett business practice! Yet, he tried to shame me on the phone by telling me in a condescending voice that in his 40 years of doing business, he'd never had anyone try to pay him via credit card! Nowhere was I informed that it had to be paid with cash or check. In fact, his bid clearly states, "Respectfully submitted with a Hallett signature-"A FINANCE CHARGE of 1-1/2% per month will be made on any unpaid previous months balance shown on our books on the 26th date of each month. This finance charge is computed by a "PERIODIC RATE" OF 1-1/2% per month, or a minimum charge of .50 cents. This is an ANNUAL PERCENTAGE RATE of 18%." DOES THIS LOOK LIKE A PROPOSAL FROM A COMPANY THAT REFUSES TO TAKE A CREDIT CARD and would intimidate and shame their customer for trying to pay with one? A company that would threaten to tear down the fence just built unless his customer paid in cash or check, because he admonished me, it's still his fence until I pay for it, though he wouldn't accept my VISA card! He went on as if taunting me to state that I'd better think about how to pay with cash or check because he would otherwise come tear down his fence, since he wouldn't leave a fence that hadn't been paid for! His tone was hateful. His crew acknowledged that he doesn't normally tell people his financial terms for cash and check only transactions, so I'm probably not the first person he's run his game on--and his response was seemingly textbook misogynistic. Perhaps he's empowered to treat women hatefully? How many men has he treated with such disdain? I paid with a check, but I will NEVER AGAIN USE THIS COMPANY FOR FENCING OF ANY KIND. Before his crew left, I showed them two pieces of very obviously defective wood hammered at the top of the fence that stood out like a sore thumb. One piece with at least 1/2-inch gash where wood was missing on the bottom side. Both pieces with defective wood. They reluctantly replaced them both before leaving, stating at first that it's the only wood they had available. Somehow they came up with two acceptable pieces, as I pointed out that it was clearly defective wood and that water from rain could easily penetrate those pieces of wood like it would a treated piece of wood that would tend to buckle at the top of a fence in time. read more

Company came out to bid for a small portion of our fence that came down in the last wind storm along with a few other week spots. She seemed less than impressed with our small job but promised to email the bid the next day. Well that was 8 days ago and no bid or communication. ‍ No one has to take a job they don't want but at least say that, not just lie then blow the customer off. Very unprofessional. read more

My wife and I have used Hallett twice for our fencing needs. Our first experience was mediocre. He uses the cheapest materials available and his prices were "okay". Against my better judgement, we again used Hallett when we moved into our new home in Ripon. This time around, I was not home while the fence was built. Upon returning home from work, I immediately inspected the work and was disappointed to discover that Hallett had not replaced two of my old fence posts as agreed. I should also note that I had already paid for the pressure-treated posts which were not installed. Rookie mistake on my part. I immediately called Hallett and asked him why he had not installed the new fence posts as agreed. He responded that the existing posts were just fine (they were not), and replacing them would be a waste of time. After arguing back and forth, it became apparent that Hallett was not going to make this right. I never was reimbursed for the materials and labor we never received. He did however eventually offer to finish the job....for additional $. I of course declined his offer. read more

They use high quality wood fence boards and Mike offers and recommends to put in aluminum posts rather than wood to help extend the life of your fence or gate. He will explain the benefits and price of each material and provide you with an estimate for each option. Mike has always shown up on time for estimates and the actual building. The job is always done quickly and with no mess left behind. We have never been less than thrilled with the service or product. read more

I wasn't sure what to expect due to the number of negative reviews here. I was hoping I hadn't made a mistake agreeing to have Mike and his guys replace our fence.... Nope, not a mistake. Mike and his guys were professional and efficient. Showed up on time, all materials were as quoted. Quick removal of old fence and reconstruction of new. New fence actually has an additional horizontal rail that adds a bunch of strength. Very satisfied. Only caveat would be (with any contractor), if you want your old concrete footings removed, make sure that is quoted. It is not uncommon for contractors to cut off the post leave the base in the ground. Some do, some don't. Just be advised that if you want them removed, specify that up front. Also, you might have a better experience if you remember, you are hiring a fence contractor, not a landscaper or shrub trimmer. Give them a reasonably "workable" area, and let them do the job they were hired for. read more

Horrible job with a horrible company. This douche named Mike tried to sister in 2 by 4s on an existing 4 by 4 and expected it to hold up a 7 ft double gate. He said he didn't know how to cut out concrete to get the post out. What a d bag. Then tried to blame it on me and wouldn't come repair it. I should have hired my sister. I wouldn't let this douche put another nail in anywhere on my property. Gate lasted one year!!! Sad workmanship and customer service. I'll send photos and the company and show this company how it's done right. What a d bag!!! Sturdy fence, with some problems, at a reasonable price. The reasons for my low rating: 1. Labels on fence boards where not removed and are impossible to remove entirely once the boards are nailed in place. 2. Concrete patch to cover up the old fence post in the walkway was not done as promised. 3. Gate drags on the concrete. 4. 2x4s nailed to the wall are not secure which leads to the latch hitting the gate. 5. Split fence board was nailed to the gate. I called and spoke to Mike regarding the last three items. He said he would fix the problems but he was very rude about it. He never showed on the date promised. I tried to call him but I got a message stating the number is not accepting calls. Mike needs to work on dealing with his customers. I had two conversations with him, one in person and one on the phone, and he was rude both times. read more

Mike & his crew built 100ft of a 7ft privacy fence. It is a high quality and a sturdy redwood fence. He used 4x6 pressure treated posts on my fence. The other companies only quoted 4x4 posts. They use 2x4 & 2x6 top boards to make the fence sturdier. Fence is in a very windy area near Tracy. My fence comes with a ten year warranty. It is expected to last twenty five years. My neighbor hired Mike to replace an adjoining fence, from the very start of the job I was not impressed. A few days before the job, I looked over the estimate I told Mike that I had large breed dogs, Mike was only concerned about making sure I had picked up all the dog poop from the yard. When the job was done, I was shocked about how messy they left my house. I found numerous nails from the old fences out by my cars that's a flat tire waiting to happen. I found a hammer hanging from my tree that's a careless employee because that hammer could have fell from the tree and struck someone in the head and cause a very serious injury. There were two wooden planks that were left in my backyard. They could have easily have caused damage to my dog once I let him back in the yard. The 4x4 posts that were according to contract to be put in cement well, they were put in cement dry cement. In other words they never mixed the cement. In some places the dry powdered cement ended up being way below the dirt level so when the ground does settle the 4x4 posts will once again be in dirt causing a fast erosion and making the 4x4 post to rot out quicker. Where the employees had dug the holes for the 4x4 posts they simply through the dirt into the decorative rocks making it impossible to clean the dirt out of the rocks. Doing something as simple as putting down a burlap sack and throwing the dirt on top of the burlap would have made it much easier for cleanup. Worst of all the owners and the workers knew I had dogs in my backyard when I returned home both of my old fences were not even temporarily hung up in an effort to keep my dog in the backyard. We made an appointment to have them come back and install new gates as they failed to write them up in the original contract how convenient. Honestly the gates look like they were made by about a seven year old. The craftsmanship absolutely poor. I seriously do not recommend this company they left my backyard an absolute mess leaving tools using some of my tools and then not putting them away and placing Tools in places where that other people could be seriously hurt if they were to fall from trees. I told the owner of the company who sat out in the truck all day and never exited and helped or checked up on his workers there was a whole lot more fencing that needed to be replaced in my yard. I even suggested that he go and take measurements so that he could write out an estimate and give it to the company. He failed to do so. Now looking back at it I'm kind of glad. By the way as for those two gates that I had them make they missed their first appointment to come back and I had to have changes made fortunately for me a neighbor was able to help me period but what an inconvenience. read more

I also asked whether he uses nails or screws to build his fences, and whether he pre-mixes the concrete before pouring it into the postholes. Mike Hallett and his crew are awesome!! First of all, when I called for an estimate Mike was out within 15 minutes. He quoted us a great price for a redwood fence. When we hired him for the job he set a date and told us he would be at our home at 7 a.m.. He and his crew were there exactly at seven. Within a half hour it started raining but they kept on working and two hours later we had a beautiful fence!! They left the work site in perfect condition and my plants were not harmed or disturbed at all. The materials he used are high quality as is his workmanship. The company's estimator/employee arrived late for our appointment, stayed approx. 15 minutes, and promised the bid by end of that same day, 9/06/18. One month and two phone calls to the company later, there's still no bid and not even a courtesy return call. Worst experience ever!!! First time home buyer & remodeling and this was the worst experience ive had dealing with someone. Don't waste your money on this guy i wish i never gave him the job. He came to my home gave me the lowest estimate out of three bids so we decided to give him the job big mistake. He did not install the fence correctly as agreed to on the first visit. We agreed we did not want the friendly neighbor fence. When I told him the job was being done wrong this is not what we agreed to he became argumentative and angry. His excuse was "do you know how many people I've seen since you". I was shocked and appauled by his behavior not professional at all. After arguing he finally tore it down and started doing the job correctly. I also noticed after he left the bottom of the gate was not cut straight. When i called him he said he would cut it to make it level. I told him you need to redo it isn't it supposed to be somewhat flush to the ground that way i don't have a big gap. He again became very argumentative raised his voice said i didn't know what i was talking about it doesn't need to be flush to the ground and hung up on me. He never answered or returned my phone calls. I was not able to leave a msg due to his inbox being full. Rookie mistake i paid him in cash and he never came back to finish the job.
