The Estes Park Half Marathon and 10k are wonderful races! (I haven't done the full or the 5k). The…read more10k starts at the High School, runs down and around Lake Estes, and comes back up to the back of the school to finish on the track. The Half Marathon starts at the school, winds around the lake, up hwy 34, then up Dry Gulch, across to Devil's Gulch, and back down into town. Back around the lake and up to finish on the High School Track. They are both well provisioned with water stops and other racing necessities such as: gels and gatorade. There are more snacks at the finish. The races can be difficult if you aren't used to altitude or hills, particularly a 4 mile uphill from mile 3-7 of the half. They are both beautifully scenic, with great views of Long's Peak. The tech shirt provided with your bib is a great quality, and the medal for the half is a nice acknowledgement of your race! I did tons and tons of research into authentic martial arts schools in northern Colorado (north of Denver, specifically). LWK is a small-ish dojo that will actually teach your child respect, discipline, work ethic, and confidence. It's not a place to send your kids for half a year only to quit when getting promoted to their third belt level is too hard. The instructors pay so much attention to detail and are even handed in having both junior and senior students polish their forms. They're also very approachable, offering up direct assessments upon request in class based on student concerns. There is an opportunity at the end of every class to get instructor feedback so you/your student will know what to work on. They are transparent about the costs, with no huge jump from the introductory period to the first official month. You can find both the tuition rates and class schedule on the website and see if it will work for you before joining. There are family discounts and a weapons class was recently added to the roster. Another area where LWK is awesomely transparent is that they have pamphlets on how belt promotions work: what forms/moves are the students expected to master. That way you have a clear idea of how to move forward. This is because LWK has been around for thirty years, which says a lot. This is an environment where the students do traditional Japanese martial arts warm ups, learn the Japanese names of their forms (nothing overwhelming), bow to each other when entering the mat/sparring/leaving class/demonstrating their forms at the end of class, where senior classmates voluntarily help junior classmates, where they recite a code of honor at the beginning and end of every class, where expectations are clear, and hard work is the norm. If you/your student are looking for a place with learned teachers, a decades long tradition of quality instruction, old school values of dedication/respect, and a welcoming-and-self-challenging environment in which to train, this is it. As with everything, you will only ever get what you put into it. 15 minutes per day of at-home practice never hurt anyone. I hope that this is giving the reader a sense of what the school is like and that it's set up for students to succeed. Everything is transparent, the tuition is reasonable (and many forms of payment are accepted), to eliminate obstacles to joining so the student and their family can just focus on their work and progress. Progress is enriched here because LWK is highly involved in the authentic Karate community in northern Colorado. They're among the handful that host a tournament every year, judging certification clinics are held here, and the recent inclusion of the kobudo (weapons) class shows a commitment to exposing students to Karate as a whole. Signing up to LWK is to join a Karate ecosystem with peers to challenge you/your student towards betterment. My only complaint is that the complimentary uniforms are affordable due to being cotton/polyester blends, and plastic-based synthetic fabrics are highly environmentally damaging in the wash because they shed lots of microplastics that wreck oceans and inevitably come back to harm the human biosphere as well. If you're a person who is committed to slowing climate change and believe that human behavior has been immoral on this topic, then I'd recommend looking into 100% cotton uniforms and belts before signing up for LWK.

It was absolutely beautiful, with the lake surrounded by dramatic mountain peaks and a peaceful alpine setting. We spotted adorable chipmunks and beautiful blue-feathered birds along the way, which made the experience even more memorable. The roughly half-mile walk around the lake was manageable with our baby in a stroller and was a wonderful family-friendly way to experience the park. A beautiful and easy-to-enjoy stop that I would definitely recommend when visiting Rocky Mountain National Park!

The serenity and beauty are 5 star without a doubt. The lake is probably the single most visited…read morelocation in the entire RMNP. As such, it is incredibly over-crowded and over-touristed. The parking lots to the lake are full by 7am. The Park Service runs a shuttle from Estes Park (the visitor center) which is the way to go. You still need to buy an entrance permit to the park and a $2 permit to visit the lake, but avoiding the hassle of having a car in the park is worth it. The shuttle runs on a defined schedule which is available in the visitor center. They run a tight ship so buses leave promptly. If you do the shuttle (which is free) you need to buy a 1 day untimed pass to the national park (no vehicle). For the Bear Lake pass, you need to go online (recreation.gov) for RMNP the day before you intend to travel at 7pm. Do it quickly because spaces sell out quickly. You will want to reserve a specific time to get on the bus. For example, we did the 10am bus. The shuttle bus schedule is in the visitor center. They send your pass to your email that you show to driver. The lake itself is beautiful. The lake is a 256 feet "hike" from the entrance to the lake. In other words, it is so easy and accessible that everyone does it. When I say everyone, I mean imagine half the population of Manhattan. There are so many people that it is impossible to find any peace or quiet. Some people call this escaping to nature. At the Bear Lake entrance there are other hikes that range in length. The trip to Emerald lake is 1.8 miles and also very popular so expect large crowds. Overall, it is great to be in nature but the big downside is the crowds.

There are small stops everywhere that are fun to shop around in at your leisure.

While visiting Rocky Mountain National Park, I spent some time in Estes Park after each day in the…read morepark. You have to go through this town to get to a couple of the park entrances. I grabbed dinner at a few restaurants and spent some time in Stanley Park. The view of Lake Estes from the park is stunning. The downtown area in Estes Park has a number of restaurants and retail stores. For activities, there is an Aerial Tramway to Prospect Mountain's summit or you can jump on a jeep tour. If you love outdoor activities, this is a great place to visit. Sadly, there was a huge wildfire going on when I was here that caused a lot of smoke. But overall, Estes Park is a great town to visit and has lots to do.
