I visited Jewell Distillery on a Saturday afternoon. I was greeted by the resident "Distillery Dog" - I forget her name, but she was a sweetheart German Shepherd. She barked up a storm until I opened the front door, then I got some snuggles in with her. I met Barbara Jewell - one of the owners. I introduced myself and stated I had sent them an e-mail a few weeks ago - she remembered and we went from there. Unfortunately, her husband Michael, who normally conducts the tours on Saturday afternoons - was not on-site and unavailable to conduct the tour. I was disappointed that I missed out on that part of their distillery experience. So I sat with Barbara at their tasting bar and had a nice conversation with her - and tasted three of their existing spirits: Big Buddha Citron Vodka, Jewell Gin, and a Blackberry liqueur. They also have a Moon Shine, but I skipped tasting that one. The Big Buddha is rather interesting - as they utilize "Buddha's Hand" citron - a citrus-esque plant - to flavor the vodka. Never seen that before! The Jewell Gin was also nice! Strong hints of licorice/Star Anise. I enjoyed tasting all three spirits! Barbara is an absolute hoot to hang out and chat with! My friend urged me to visit telling me that we could buy "the best peaches in the world!" We stopped by on a beautiful day in July and grabbed some peaches, lemon cucumbers, zucchini and tomatoes. We only had about $25 cash on us, and when our total came to $25.47, the owner told us to "not worry about it." He was very kind and was sure to ask me if I had any questions about the produce. The sweet little open air stand had an old drink cooler and was decorated with fresh wildflowers. It almost felt like stepping back into time. I love to support small businesses like this, especially ones who have been around for so long! I will now be adding Trinity River Farms as a routine stop every time I head to Willow Creek!
