The food & service more than makes up for what this place lacks in ambiance. The (who we believe to be) owner is incredibly friendly, patient & helpful, happy to explain each dish and make recommendations. He's also quick with a joke & loves to have a chat, giving excellent personal service. We'd gone here on a Living Social voucher, and were wary as past voucher experiences had been a bit hit & miss. At Ba'Albek however, we were treated the same as all the other diners. The voucher entitled us to the Banquet off the menu, usually reserved for 4 people, a selection of 8 tapas style dishes & 2 meat skewers each, followed by coffee & baklava. To say the food was delicious would be an understatment, it was amazing! The hommus & falafel were the best I've ever eaten, and the rest of the dishes were an impressive assortment of new experiences. So fresh & full of flavour, kudos to the chef. And there was just so much of it, we were willing to forego the coffee & desert, but the owner insisted we take the baklava home & we were so glad he did, it was absolutely divine, melt-in-your-mouth good! An Australian from Sydney who comes to Byron bay every year first told me about this Egyptian restaurant. MUST GET: triple dip (pita bread with hummus, Baba ganoush, and spicy tomato sauce). The pita bread is thin and toasted - delicious! Each complement is delicious! We asked for extra pita bread and finished all of them! Prawns with mango avocado sauce - Super fresh prawns that are perfectly grilled. I like the mango avocado sauce. Can use a bit more salt or lime sauce on this. SOLID: Roasted cauliflower - fantastic sauce with dukka. The cauliflowers were a bit over cooked. Ask for a crunchier version. SKIP: Fatoush salad - this salad is too salty for an american. Ask them to dress it with less salt. Fried eggplant with macadamia nut - I liked the eggplant a lot which is tender and not greasy or bitter (difficult to do!) this dish was a bit bland. Put some of that tomato sauce from the triple dip to spice it up a bit. You can purchase wine here or BYOB. We decided for the latter and grabbed a bottle down the street on Bay Ln.
