037 / 100 - 2018 YELP 100 CHALLENGE. What a great park! This place is dog friendly, but I saw a lot of runners in the area when I visited. There is tons of ample space and room to go for a walk, a run, or play with man's best friend. Dogs can be on leash or off leash - I saw a mix of both. Everyone we ran into was very friendly and nice. We didn't see any aggressive dogs (nor did we encounter any) and if we wanted to move away to a more secluded area, there was plenty of room to do that. From what I could tell, most of the park is clean. Of course there were some areas that some dog owner's didn't pick up after their pets, but not as bad as you might anticipate. Great view and a great location to take tons of cute photos. Loved this park and would definitely recommend! read more

This park is so beautiful. The average rating is due to the HUGE DOG PROBLEM. If you have young children, please be careful. I love animals, but I believe that dogs should be on a leash when in public. I've witnessed dogs attacking other dogs, and defecating all over the soccer fields. I've also witnessed small children getting scared because of huge, unleashed dogs running at them. Signs are posted all over the park stating that dogs need to be on leashes. Aren't unleashed dogs against the law? Isn't this a liability for dog owners? This is not a dog park. There are a multitude of dog parks in the area that welcome unleashed dogs. Parks should be for our children. Especially, children who live in more urban areas and do not have the luxury of having access to their own backyard. read more

This is a great Park that was built on landfill. You get the most amazing views of greenery and the far distant land of Boston. There's wonderful soccer fields that children use from nearby schools and a little kiddy Park. And they also have place you can launch your canoe and wonderful woodsy walk area that is close to a cemetery after you walk the long path. I love the views and the walking path it is very Scenic. Good picnic space and ideal for all ages. read more

I want to preface this review, by first stating how great this park is! The soccer fields, trails and play structures are top notch. I commend the city on transforming a landfill into something wonderful for our community. My criticism comes primarily from the unleashed dogs that have taken over the park. I am an educator and I tutor low income children from the Boston area. A lot of my students do not have a backyard, and depend heavily on public parks for both their exercise and recreational needs. Sadly, most of my students choose not to go to Millenium park because of its lack of diversity and the large population of unleashed dogs. I'm concerned because a lot of the soccer fields are no longer accessible to urban children to play sports. Instead, the fields seem to cater to an older population with unleashed dogs that view children as more of a nuisance than anything else. (Dogs defecating on the fields is also a huge problem, sadly.) We need to invest resources into our urban children because they are our future. Signs are strategically placed throughout the park stating that unleashed dogs are against the law. The law needs to be enforced for the common good of us all. Multiple dog parks are available to dog owners in West Roxbury and neighboring towns such as Newton and Needham. read more

I like the park and it's miles of trails, however I wish dogs were kept leashed as a rule. My small dog does not appreciate when big dogs run around loose and is scared of them. I am always concerned with the possibility of a confrontation that might harm my little one. read more

Just to add a few things. The park is made up of the old landfill hill, the Charles river, and a woodland. The hill itself if popular for dogwalking and inline skating. The top - not exactly flat - is used for soccer games. There's a place to park and put canoes the Charles or to do some fishing. The woodland trail gets you out of the sun on a hot day. Since the old landfill is surrounded by wetlands on three sides, some of the trees start changing color early in the fall - it's a great place for leaf peeping right in the city. There's also a tot lot for the younger kiddies. The Boston Kite Festival is held at the park each year - June 13 this year (2009). These are not your tather's kites - it's really a spectacular event. read more

This review is solely in regard to dogs. Great spot for off-leash(SHHHHHH don't tell Mumbles!!) walking and letting the pooch stretch their legs and socialize. The place is nicely kept and a clean spot to walk around. There are some lazy owners that need to be more attentive to picking up after their pet, but for the most part people are pretty conscious about curbing. The wood trails offer a great nature walk and the upper level provides a fantastic view of Boston and around the 128 belt. Great for morning/after work walks! read more

Growing up I remember an old drive theater on the old VFW Parkway near the West Roxbury High School and it's sprawl of playing fields. What I also remember is the sight of circling sea gulls around the massive land fill that popped up behind the high school and the (not so new) Home Depot. But this is a happy story, the massive Millennium Park and it's web of bike and foot trails now exists over the dump. The DCW (used to be the MDC) takes really good care of this place. It is well groomed and hordes of dog walkers, bikers, runners, bird watchers, canoers, fishing minded folk and family picnic types all show up. You can follow the trails from West Roxbury all the way to Cutler Park in Needham if you have your bug repellent and waders or you can watch all the dorky pro-kite competitions in the summer. And if you are of the 'have kid' variety you might be up there for a soccer game anyway. The park has one toilet, yeah. A playground, plenty of parking and it's pretty safe to let the dogs off leash. Be warned if they are water dogs, they will be in the Charles - but it's pretty clean up here and there are ducks and other fowl for them to chase. read more

This has to be the 'silk purse out of a sow's ear,' of parks. Once this was the old Gardner Street dump, where a lot of Boston's trash wound up, and the only things running around were rats and other rodents. Now, having covered it over and drained much of the leachate, the city has created a pleasant recreational area featuring paved paths, stunning vistas of the area west of Boston, and some creative landscaping. I've been here to walk, run, feed the birds, and generally chill out after a rough day. It's quiet, peaceful, and despite being always a bit windy, a great place for families and individuals to relax. Not too long ago this was the sorriest eyesore within the city limits, hands down. Its transformation has been nothing short of amazing and the city deserves a lot of credit for what it has become. Pretty nice. read more

This park is absolutely amazing. It has 2 or 3 gigantic fields (not sure because the fields are so big!). When the weather is nice, the place is fantastic to take a walk, go running, walk your dog, take your kids (there's a small playground), play games on the field, fly your kite, and so much more! I've played touch football and frisbee here in the summer and it was such a good place to play. HIGHly recommended. There's not too much shade though, so be prepared to stay hot in the summer. Fun fact, this park used to be a landfill so it is really high up. The best part in my opinion is that you can see Boston in the distance when you're on the top level of the park! read more

. . . Not in Kansas Anymore This beautiful oasis in the middle of West Roxbury is a testament to the power of transformation. What was once a landfill is now a pristine 3+ mile stretch of paradise. There are bird feeders on outdated phone polls, huge fields for kids, playgrounds, flowers, trees and brogues a plenty. . .. Part of it is great pavement for rollerblading. It's also a great place to ride your bike, walk, run. People get together to have doggy play dates. My dogs were more the James Dean-type, although we did go a few times. There is also a separate part of the park for the dogs to swim. It's on the lower level-follow the wet dogs. We went to Millennium every day, barring a blinding snowstorm. They loved to go swimming in the "backwoods" cove in the summer. This one was very skittish, having been abused by her former people, but , with the help of her labrador retriever sis, eventually learned how to swim and loved it. On hot days, I went in with them. It was the summer it was so hot, we had a drought. The town puts on events and shows here, as well. I went to a fireworks celebration that was transcendental. If you do go here, and I highly suggest you do, watch out for turtles who have lost their way. They're very old, beautiful, and need to go back in the water. It's a rarity. They may be snappers, so be careful. There is an occasional snake, not of the poisonous kind; no worries. Be sure to take your camera if you can. The view of the sky here is phenomenal. read more

Every weekend I say to myself "where do I feel like going this weekend", as I always make sure to go for a walk on the weekend (and sometimes on weekdays too). Normally my choice ends up being Millennium Park or Bird Park (my other favorite). Whenever I choose Millennium, it's always great. It's sort of weird to think that in a busy city like Boston (as this park is technically in Boston), there is space for a gigantic walking park like Millennium. Here at the park there are so many walking trails. Perfect spot to bring pets, and children, or have a picnic. My favorite of the trails is the large circle right at the parking lot, it's perfect for a few quick laps around. Other great trails that are more deserted are down by the bridge. I believe that one of them even leads to the Saw Mill Pkwy in Newton, sort of cool. Perfect place for a walk anytime, and definitely the best choice for Bostonians, if you don't want the Arnold Arboretum. read more

I love running here! The park is always clear of garbage, and the paths provide different levels of difficulty-incline and flat. The view from the top of the park is very pretty, and worth the hike up if you're running. I don't know how accessible it is by car, but this is a huge, vast space that would be great to hangout and play soccer or just walk around. Warning though, the park has very little shade. read more

Stunning views can be seen in all directions atop Millennium Park. I work at the bottom of the hill so I frequently walk up here for some midday fresh air. My work also hosts our annual 5K up and around the park. My preference for MP is a leisurely walk, the run is a killer because of all of the hills! Regardless, the location is gorgeous and the surroundings are peaceful. Bring a book up here and enjoy the breeze! read more

Contrary to what the internet says or the last time many people have visited, there's official looking signage that says biking is prohibited. You could probably get away with taking a stroll on foot while your kids ride their bikes. Kids had fun at the playground, but we went elsewhere for our bike ride. read more

I have lived in the area my entire life ad only recently discovered millennium park. I am upset I have been missing out for so long. Excellent for jogging on a late Sunday afternoon. They also have a great swing set and playground for the kids. I will be a regular soon. read more

Beautiful spot that runs through some amazing wetlands- you don't get to see this kind of wildlife very often. Wheelchair, stroller, and dog-friendly! Only two drawbacks I see- not nearly enough benches for sitting and quietly observing the diverse fauna, and the trails don't have enough connectors between levels. It's set up as 3 heights, and there are only a couple connectors between levels, so if you want to go up and down you have to tromp through uneven and yucky brush. But a gorgeous little escape right inside the city! Feels like a different world! read more

I've been to Millennium park so many times I've lost count. The view of downtown Boston the surrounding area is magnificent. Plenty of paths to go for a walk and there's big playgrounds for the kids. There's also dirt bike paths in the woods beyond the huge grassy plateau. The Charles River also runs along side this park with a few places to throw a canoe or kayak in the water. There's a lot to explore here, so be sure to bring a kite too, there's always a strong breeze at the top of the park. Lots to explore, so take the time to relax and have fun. I'd give this park 5 stars except the only thing lacking (because it's a relatively new park) is more trees for shade. read more

I found this place just this morning. I have heard many people say they like to bring there dogs here, so as any dog lover I had to check it out. Luckily I was super early for work this morning and had the pup with me. So we decided to take a nice walk to check it out. This place is pretty much right off the VFW, about a 5 min ride from work. I followed the road to the park area and nicely paved walkway. Majority of people walking were also enjoying the day with their 4 legged friends. Everyone seemed very friendly. We took a nice walk around twice. By then the pup was ready to leave. There were plenty of trash cans. Beautiful view of the city. I just really enjoyed this place. I looked forward to visiting this place again! read more

I live within walking distance of this park and it is awesome to have in the neighborhood. I like that it has three separate paved pathways and it is indicated how long each one is, good for those exercising sans pedometer. I've hardly seen all of the park yet as it's so big but the views of Boston and the surrounding metro areas are phenomenal from the upper playground area. There's also a ramp into the Charles to bring your small watercraft, can't wait for the weather to get warm so I can bust out the kayak! a great place for dog owners too I bring my pup here and the long walk tires him right out read more

This place is fab for everything. Lush green fields for sports practice. Lengthy hilly and flat walking paths. Kayak/canoe launch (where the dogs love to swim). Bird watching areas. Beautiful landscaping, the foliage smells so nice (take your allegra!). I've met so many nice people here, just in passing, every time we go. If you have a dog and live in the area (or further) it is such a great place to take them. The park is "on leash" only, though I will tell you everyone more or less allows their well behaved dogs wander off leash. Great for letting them run/exercise and get that canine energy out. read more

Absolutely gorgeous. Hundreds of kids playing soccer and swings yet place is so big that one hardly notices them. Dozens walking or jogging with smiles. Dogs on leashes with owners attending to their poop. Park is clean, well maintained and landscapes. Boston is lucky to have this jewel. read more

It's hard to imagine that the park used to be a landfill. Now it's a beautiful park where you can look down on surrounding areas, and you can see the Prudential building in Boston from here. At the top of the park, the vista is impressive and the feeling of being in the open with a bright blue sky, is hard to match. There are soccer matches on the weekends, so it tends to get crowded with parents and kids, especially in the playground area. You'll see people who bike, rollerblade, play frisbee, and walk dogs. There are portable lavatories, but they're not always there. The park is also right next to West Roxbury High School, so sometimes a few kids will chill out in the park after school. During the winter, there is no snow removal. At the bottom of the park, you can bring a raft and go in the Charles River. There are also hiking trails (it may take you far from the park, so be sure you know the route first and how long it'll take). Open from dawn to dusk, after that, a security car patrols the premises. read more

You forget you're in Boston when you come out here. Due to the elevation of the old landfill, you have amazing views of the Middle Charles River to your west and Boston skyline to your east. Access to Newton trails via a connector path. If you hate dogs you may not like this place, they are everywhere. read more
