After reading the reviews and hearing about it some more, We decided to make a day trip if it from London to Southend-on-Sea and see if the food lived up to the hype. Oh boy, the pictures don't do the food justice. Firstly, this is one of the very few places where the food actually looks like the picture!! So my hubby ordered the rib tips for a starter, daughter had the shrimp starter and I had the brisket end starter. We were bowled over by how delicious the starters were. The shrimp was crispy and just plain gorgeous, we've never tasted better, honestly. Just he shrimp alone made the trip worth it. The rib tips and brisket ends were also amazing. So yummy. For our mains, were we glad we'd starved before coming! Hubby had the manwich, massive sandwiches, never seen bigger honestly and he said they were sooo good. Sandwiches came with chips and coleslaw and he demolished the lot to the shock of the waiter lol. My daughter had hickory smoked ribs and that came with corn on the cob, salad, coleslaw and chips. The meat off the rib just literally fell off the bone. It was so delicious and so full of flavour that even she managed to eat most of it. I had the Almighty burger...there are just no words to describe the awesomeness of this beast. It also came with chips and slaw and it was fantastic I ate it all. The portions here are HUGE and we didn't need to eat anything else all day... Apart from dessert coz honestly we'd come all the way, why not have dessert hey? The dessert was amazing, everything was amazing. We were so full at the end, thank God the restaurant is right by the sea and pier so we had a long walk site seeing to get the food down before going back home. We are certainly returning to taste all the other stuff on the menu! YUMMY!!!!!! Service was really good and the music and drinks were excellent

As it took so long I then asked for it to be takeaway...They then charged service...Not sure what for. Mama's ribs coating was too thick and to be honest not very nice. Perhaps they messed up the recipe? Meat itself was very good, but I struggled to remove as much of the coating as possible. Sweetcorn overcooked. Staff seemed ingenuine...Atmosphere is pretty good, but pretty poor value and food is hit and miss. The place across the road is the opposite. Humble, delicious and well priced.

The basement has a bar, lounge and restaurant. It was a little noisy. But we could still talk. The roasted scallops were cooked perfectly. The green sauce was tasty. I love the presentation. The Bill Marrow was also good. It was very rich. There were two kinds of Sunday roast a sirloin and a rump. Three of us had the rump roast dinner and three had the sirloin roast dinner. It was hard to tell the difference. All the dinners came with roasted potatoes greens and of course, Yorkshire pudding. It was all delicious. I have to say my favorite part is always the Yorkshire pudding. I also have a green salad, which is basically just lettuce with a light dressing. It was very fresh. We were too full for dessert. The service was excellent. We were seated right away and given water. In the UK, you can order sparkling, still or tap. Sparkling and still come with a charge. Tap is usually free. Our server was attentive without hovering. It's a good idea to make reservations at Hawksmoor especially for the Sunday roast. We got there at three by the time we left around 4:30 some of the roasts were already sold out. Just a note: Sunday roost is usually a late lunch not a dinner. It's good to go between two and four especially if you don't have a reservation.

I mention this because we have some amazing steak restaurants in SoCal. The restaurant had several families dining, and had a nice level of background chatter. Our chef took the time to come speak with us, recommend cuts of beef and generally go over our options. This was a lovely surprise as this rarely happens. We started with "fall off the bone" ribs and the Hallumi - (squeaky cheese - wish I could find this here in SoCal... if anyone reading this knows a place... please let me know!) We ordered rib eye steaks, I had the filet... with sides of creamed spinach/truffle fries and Mac and cheese. Everything was cooked to our liking, and the chef came back out to check on us. We actually ended up going back again just because the food and service were great. Look forward to visiting again! (Oooh... if you go, ask for their salts.. I liked the Merlot infused one)

We were seated with no reservation, but we did come closer to closing time. Staff warned us that we did need to order and get any drinks we wanted sooner rather than later, but that was OK. I got the flat iron steak because of course I had to try the namesake of the place. I got it with the side of roasted aubergine, tomato, basil, and mozzarella. I did not enjoy the side because of the very mushy texture, so that was a bit of a bummer. The steak itself was pretty delish. As a cocktail I had their passion fruit Collins which was very refreshing. I found that overall in London the cocktails were all on point pretty much everywhere we went. We had noticed that any person leaving the restaurant always had ice cream, and when we were finished with the meal we did get the little silver cleavers and our free sweet treat. I appreciated the straightforward menu and the ambience, which is casual but also stylish and not pretentious at all, just relaxed and cozy with softer lighting and a good flow.
