I've spent the last several years seeing shows at DeVos Performance Hall in Grand Rapids and I have to say I think we're a bit spoiled. They've done some renovations which have made the experience there better. Miller Auditorium could definitely use some polishing! It's a bit drab inside and feels like a high school auditorium to me. We recently attended Cats the musical there and enjoyed the performance, but there's room for improvement at the theatre. The main lobby/concourse area is super crowded and packed. Everything is on top of each other - bathroom lines, concession counter lines, coat check lines, merchandise counter lines, and box office lines - all squished into one narrow space. It has terrible flow and makes for a cramped experience. The women's restroom line was very long even when they announced the other bathroom upstairs. The restroom also has a big carpeted lounge area that seems like wasted space. There were also zero security measures in place - they weren't even checking tickets at the main entrance doors (they did check them right before you entered the actual auditorium). No metal detectors or checking of bags - something I'm just so used to at DeVos. It would be more secure and feel a bit safer to me with those measures in place. Our seats were off to the aisle side of the orchestra level. We had a pretty decent viewpoint, but I was very distracted by the ushers who were playing phone police and intercepting anyone taking photos or videos during the performance. That's totally understandable, but it was annoying when one of them rushed down our row in front of us to the middle of the section right during one of the quiet ballads. I think there should be a clearer announcement at the beginning of the performance, rather than being disruptive to other guests during the show. I would come back in the future if there's a show that I really want to see that's not in GR, but it's not the best theatre experience I've had. read more

What can I say? I have grown up with Miller Auditorium in my life, and since we moved back to Kalamazoo several years ago, it has become such a highlight of joy for our family. There is so much going on at Miller...from touring Broadway shows to the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra to special guests to local mainstay Kalamazoo Concert Band. Patron services staffing, under the extremely capable Shannon Rininger, makes sure that each and every staff member that we come into contact with is friendly and helpful (not always the case at big venues, let's be honest). The Marketing and Social media team is ON POINT, with social media that makes me want to just move in and see EVERYTHING ever to cross that stage. But mostly? The wide range of things to see there, the warmth I feel from the staff, and the true connection to the community (via social media and in person) make Miller a gem that Kalamazoo is SO lucky to have. read more

It's so nice that in our community we have such a wonderful theatre that really does attract some amazing performances! Many times I've been to an almost full house here, even on a weeknight. I've seen many shows but tonight I saw Diavolo. It was amazing! The performers were fantastic and the props and sound was great! The seats are comfy, the auditorium itself is set up well with many entrances and many bathrooms. I find the 2nd floor left side bathroom is always less busy! Beer and wine is available for purchase and if you bring your reusable cup back you'll save $2! read more

So grateful to have a venue that brings such incredible talent to SW Michigan. The nosebleed seats are super affordable (even moreso if you seeing for a season ticket), and the closet seats are stellar! I've seen dozens of musicals, as well as a wide variety of other programming -- from the local symphony providing a live score for favorite films like the Star Wars series, to touring productions of dance and acrobatic acts a la this season's Diavolo. Love it that you can park almost anywhere meant on show nights and not have to pay for it. They do a pretty good job of filtering traffic out after shows as well. And as of a few years ago, you can purchase a Miller cup and bring your adult beverages to your seat during the performances. It's nice not to feel rushed to finish your drink during intermission. Just another nice touch at a lovely local venue. read more

Very handicap friendly! We had seats in the front row. They have ramps rather than steps! An usher helped me with my rollator so I didn't pick up too much speed going down the ramp. The seats are large and comfortable. The backs are on a spring so you can lean back and stretch out. Love their adult sippy cups for beer and wine! read more

I've been to several show's over many years and have regularly had a great experience! Kenny Rogers, Stomp, Menopause the Musical, Lion King and others - and this year I treated myself to become a Broadway subscriber with tickets to all 4 Broadway shows (and an awesome parking pass in the ramp!). I've been to 3 of the 4 so far this season and I just love, love, love it! The concessions are fine - really what more do you need than water and a snack - the women's bathroom lines are usually quite long (but where aren't they?), The volunteers that greet, do coat check, work concessions, usher and clean up are generally very nice and helpful. I look forward to more and more shows here. BTW, Grand tier right is pretty awesome for seating. read more

This is a great venue for live performances the accoustics are a little lacking especially if you're sitting in the grand tier like I was last night for the Nutcracker ballet with some friends but you can get a pretty good view of the stage no matter where your seats are in the theater it just may be difficult for you to see what's happening if they are singing or what not luckily ballets have no lyrics just lovely music check it out fellow yelpers if you get a chance. read more

I love when I have the opportunity to go to Miller auditorium for a show because you know you will see and experience top notch entertainment. There are 3 levels of seating. I have sat only in the orchestra section or the mezzanine. Both provide great seats for most shows. The provide a free coat check and offer snacks as well as beer and wine. I tend to park in the parking garage as you can take the pedestrian bridge into the building from the second level of the garage. read more

We visited Miller Auditorium for the first time last month when we took our six year old to see Star Wars: A New Hope in Concert. The first half of the show had kind of a Drive in theater feel with all the cell phones and talking and even the costumes many our follow concert goers were wearing (including our son) lol. After intermission everyone seemed to settle down and get into the show. It really turned out to be a worthwhile experience which our son truly enjoyed. Just over a month ago I had the pleasure to attend a showing of Motown The Musical here. I absolutely love the addition the allowed drinks in tumbler cups. The wine selection was a very nice addition to the evening! The show was phenomenal!!! I cannot say enough about the amazing stage performance that I witnessed. Every single person on the stage nailed it. The chance to attend the Q and A session after the show was more than I could have ever expected. The performers were amazing to take the time from their evening to speak with high-school kids about the show, the history, and their own personal lived and careers was inspiring. The only critique I can offer is with the coffee. I was pleased to see the support of the local coffee shop, Water Street, however the coffee's taste was anything but representative of WS quality. I do not know what happened. I know it is not always possible but if someone from the staff could sample it during the run I am sure it would have been easily caught. However in the scheme of the entire evening, that did not dim the level of joy that I had to be there. Thank you for such a wonderful evening, especially since it took place on my birthday as well! So first we'll start out with the auditorium. It's nice and water fountains and bathrooms on every level. As well as concessions and depending on the performers merchandise to buy. Did I mention bathrooms on every floor? Because that's a huge plus for me, especially knowing how crowded the intermissions can get. The ushers, staff, and all help I encountered during the show tonight were amazing. They were quick to help us to our seats, along with a brochure, and service with a huge smile! The lobby can get quite crowded, but hey, if I see that, then the show must be good! Getting out can be a tricky task, but patience prevails, wink, wink. If you need to get home, depending on the performance, it might be a bit before getting out. But the traffic flow is directed in a very efficient manner. Meaning, getting out will be a lot easier. So what was it that was just so breathtaking for me? The broadway production of Disney's The Lion King, it really brought back some old childhood memories! The music was beautiful, the dances were well choreographed, the costumes were amazing, and the comic relief was on point! So about where we were sitting. We sat in the middle of the Grand Tier and still could see the stage perfectly. So that's another ten points for the auditorium in my book. If you enjoy large productions, this is the place for you. Miller does it's best job to accommodate groups, and to bring the largest productions they can to Kalamazoo. Phantom, Wicked, Beauty and the Beast have all stopped by recently, and more are bound to come. The sound is nice (not perfect), the lighting is ideal, and it does not seem to matter where you are seated for getting a good view. For the annoying things....parking is nice, but could be better. I also am not a huge fan of some years having no major productions. While its true I may be judging what makes a production good, I am not a theater man, and do not know what defines a good production. However, if my friends are not familiar with it, I am counting it as "not famous." read more

Miller, thank you for bringing wonderful Broadway shows to Kalamazoo. I have seen Wicked, Book of Mormon and last night Motown the Musical. It's a awesome venue, not a bad seat in the house. Parking was a breeze, refreshments available and a very nice, professional staff on hand. Kinky Boots is coming in the fall and Lion King in 2018. Oh Miller, I may just love you for bringing Wicked to me....sigh....Love!! Decent theatre - I have only been in the upper levels at this point for shows & a graduation. What is nice is they really have the parking situation under control too. It kind of takes a long time to get into the lot from the main street but once you do they get you into a spot fairly quickly and even getting out isn't too bad. That is talent! read more

I have seen many shows here over the last few years. Their lineup always includes some big name titles and the shows are top notch professional. Great sound quality for theater and/or concerts. I have sat on the main floor and on the Grand Tier and haven't had a bad seat yet. Concessions are actually really cheap compared to other venues, and you can take your beverages in the theater with you! The intermission is not quite long enough to get through the concession line and/or the restroom line. Definitely don't have time for both. I did see the staff try to speed along the concession line by selling just bottled water for cash sales as people were waiting to approach the snack counter. Volunteer ushers are always pleasant and friendly. Be advised that if you purchase seats in the center of the auditorium, the rows are forever long between the left and right aisle, so you have to slide by quite a few people to get to your center seats. There's on site covered parking in the attached garage, but be prepared to wait at least 15 minutes in a line of cars to exit. read more
