Great collection of southwestern art. I learned a lot about different pottery styles each Native American nation has. It also included a good amount of religious art. Not really my style, but I appreciated the extent. Millicent Rogers was an interesting aristocrat. I liked the display near the end of the museum of her drawings. She had a very whimsical style. I didn't like the brightly colored walls in each of the rooms. I felt it detracted from the pieces on display.

From the outside, this muesum looks small, it appears it doesn't have much to offer. Well, that couldn't be farther from the truth. Once inside you realize it keeps wrapping around and around. Rooms appear out of nowhere that are full of amazing artifacts. You could spend hours in here if you really wanted to. The jewlery was beautiful. The pieces were stunning. The art was impressive as well. The staff loved to talk to you about it all, they really know pretty much all there is to know about all the pieces the museum has to offer. They take pride in Taos, and in the museum, as they well should. I also have to mention that we rolled in on a road trip we were taking, and it wound up being a festival. Admission was free, always a plus. They had wonderful actives all day. We arrived just in time to see some Indian Dancers that almost brought me to tears. We enjoyed some food, and watching demonstrations by local artists crafting their craft. It was such a good day, and so unexpected. We will be back to Taos, and we will for sure return to Millicent Rogers. I recommend anyone visiting Taos swing by and enjoy, you will not be disappointed!

Powerfully motivating for the entrepreneurial woman, emphasis on Millicent's work. Worth the detour off 285.

It was a bit of a drive up (via the High Road), but well worth the time and effort. These multi-story homes are more than a thousand years old. None of the homes in the Taos Pueblo are vacant - five or six families live on the Pueblo full time, while the others live in town (with running water and electricity) but stay in their ancestral home many weeks throughout the year for important celebrations. We about the history of the Taos (or Tewa) people from our guide, Riley. That started at the Saint Geronimo Chapel and onward to the old church grounds, that hold the crumbling ruins of the original San Geronimo Chapel. Built in 1619 by Spanish priests using forced Native labor, it was destroyed during the 1680 Pueblo Revolt and again in 1847 by the U.S. Army (with women and children inside). In between were information on Pueblo ovens, family ties, and the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) movement. There were also various shop sprinkled throughout, with a few pleasant surprises, like one run by an established Santa Fe painter, and some nicely done local jewelry and other art. There was a lot to see here and I appreciated the leisurely pace, while being respectful of restricted areas and honoring any cultural-related requests by our hosts.

We arrived and as we were at the stop sign, a young man motioned us back in which I obliged. He asked if we were here for the tour in which he directly us to park in the lot. We thanked him and proceeded to go pay for the admission fee. It was cold and drizzling but still made the most of it. We walked around and noticed a bunch of people standing so we hurried to joined them. The tour guide Bear is awesome, she provided detail of the community and how life is. At that time, we noticed some of the shops opening for business. There were only a few opened and we went to all of them. I gotta admit, I did buy some items at different vendors as thats what you there to do. Give it a try and dont penny pinch on a cool experience.

If you are in Taos, you must see this museum and learn all you can about Christopher "Kit" Carson…read more A highlight of our visit was definitely Dave, who greeted us and gave us instructions on how to best enjoy our visit. He is so passionate about the history of Kit Carson and his influence on the area and the expansion of the West. The tour starts with a short history channel video and then continues with a walk through the house. Painstaking renovations have been taking place and are still underway on the property. You will see many artifacts, photos, and wall signage explaining the history of what you are looking at along the way. Make this a stop on your visit to Taos!

Unbeknownst to me, he had been there as a young boy. Now that he's old - lol - he didn't remember the museum bring set up the way it was. We arrived at approximately 3:20PM which was forty minutes from closing time. Dave, the lone museum staff member, explained that he would stay as long as we needed, but not accept any new visitors after a certain time. Tickets to the non-profit museum were $10 per adult. Cash or card was accepted. Dave made our visit a 5-star experience. He loves history. He has read several of the books if not all of them from the gift shop. He recommended "Blood & Thunder" by Hampton Sides which was an historical account of Kit Carson's life, "yet reads like a novel." We first watched a 20-minute documentary in the theater across the courtyard highlighting Carson's key adventures. The women's restroom was nearby and reasonably clean. Then we trekked back over to the museum. If you're over 5'6" watch your head because the doorways are low. There were minimal artifacts scattered throughout, but we enjoyed it nonetheless. Parking was a bit of a hassle as there was no lot - only metered street parking a ways down. And in the last words of Kit Carson, "Goodbye, friends, adios amigos."
