    Ski deck apres views
    Catherine A.

We came to the outdoor deck for aprés after a long day of skiing. I do not recommend it. For $13 you can get a hockey puck of a burger with cold fries with a buffet of condiments you add yourself. Ridiculously priced. The bar is cash only and they do have an ATM inside the main dining room (which is extremely dark and lacking character, surprising for such a nice hotel). The outdoor bar has lots of family style seating and some raised bleacher-style seating to watch skiers come down the final run. The beer options were a little boring, but they do have a full bar. Overall blah experience.

The St Bernard is the *complete* experience! It's like a family away from home, set in a Swiss ski village worlds away. A few vignettes of your week-long experience: * Jean Mayer (the amazing proprietor and founder of Ski Week in Taos) - shouting "qu'est-ce que c'est??" as he carries a tray full of foie gras on filet mignon (yes!) to your family-style dining table. * Lapping chair one all day, skiing back into the hotel via the ski-in ski-out porch landing for a hot lunch, then back immediately for a full afternoon of black runs. * Enjoying the only night-life in town as a local band plays in the hotel bar after 8pm, and chatting with the hotel staff (many of whom are part of the Mayer family or have worked at the St Bernard for 10+ years) * Being humbled and beaten-down by the week-long ski lessons, and finally feeling better about your snow carving after grabbing a swig at the martini tree on day #6 If you want to get into the hotel rotation, be ready to start at the bottom because its schedule is already mostly filled by regulars that have been coming for decades (for good or bad). Book a room for an off-peak week in one of the smaller rooms that's left - next year you'll get first dibs for the same weekend, maybe upgrade to a better room or an A-frame lodge. P.S. Why does this place have so few reviews? Because they wanna keep it that way! Read more on its unique history here: http://travel.nytimes.com/2008/01/25/travel/escapes/25TAOS.html

Food was good, however costumer service is terrible! This place lacked hospitality and friendliness, very disappointing.

Not sure I will come back to Taos because I am afraid of skiing, but if I do, this is place worth checking on.

The staff doing the security checks didn't seem like they were paying much attention to what they were doing. Only one person was using the metal detecting wand so it took a little while to get to everyone in line, but I saw a few people walk around this guy and go straight to the other staff member who was scanning the tickets at the entrance. I assumed they were other staff or crew for the bands but nope, there were attendees like everyone else. Don't know why the other security staff just let them walk past. Sometimes the security guy vaguely waved the wand in someone's general direction without really checking and that was good enough, I guess. The security guy waved the metal detector wand around me and nothing seemed out of the ordinary but then the guy jammed the wand into my crotch. I was startled but he said I could proceed. I bet he wasn't even looking where he was pointing the wand. I thought about getting something to eat but the menu only had limited offerings which were a chili dog, Indian taco, frito pie, fries, and ice cream sandwiches. The carnival food didn't appeal to me so I settled for an $8 drink during my time at the concert. Outside food and drink are not allowed here. The venue has two outdoor stages, the big dome-shaped one in the back and a smaller platform off to the side by the entrance. There are plastic tables and chairs placed around the area and some metal tables and chairs on the patio under the shade structure. There was a tent off to the side selling the same items that were offered inside but out here you had to pick up your food from a small window farther along the building's exterior. I found it kind of funny that there was a designated smoking section by the fence but there were plenty of people smoking all around the area. It was raining during the concert but that didn't bother me or anyone else as it looked like almost everyone brought umbrellas and rain gear. I may visit again if there is another concert I want to see taking place here.

Don't get me wrong, we love Mexican food, but nothing can beat our TexMex! Beware they are open 7 days a week for the holidays until 5 Jan. They open at 4:30. When you come in, it's beautifully decorated for Christmas! They have a fire burning where you can wait and not definitely had a rustic feel to it! They sat us next to the fire which was really nice for it being cold outside. Our server was very attentive, nice and knowledgeable. The menus were pretty spiffy too as it looked like an old newspaper clipping! They had a variety of steak and also had different animal options like elk & bison. The prices were a bit steep but given the quality and how well they executed the meal, I would say it was well worth it! You are offered a pretzel like bread with butter while ordering. Our waiter was on it and he continued to fill our drinks before we could even ask for more! What we ordered: - Bison ribeye (medium+): this was a gem! If you've never had bison before, don't get scared! It tastes just like cow only it's better for you! The cook was perfection and the seasoning on point! My 13 year old ordered it and devoured it! He had initially asked for A1 sauce but because it was flavored so well, opted not to use it. He said it was one of the best steaks he has ever had! - Ground Elks (medium) w/ chile and grilled onions: it comes dry but our waiter suggested adding green chile and onions to it (beware that's an $11 up charge). It was flavored well, cooked well and tasted amazing. My husband never had elk and said it was really good. Tasted just like ground beef with just a hint of something different. - 12 oz New York sirloin (medium): cooked to perfection, seasoned perfectly and topped it with a garlic/butter compound. My daughter, who rarely eats anything more than a 3oz, ate more than half because she liked it that much. - 10oz ribeye (medium): cooked and flavored to perfection again!! On top of that, it was so tender and melted like butter in my mouth! It was so smooth, and just an amazing quality I hadn't had in such a long time. While ribeye comes fatty, this was utter perfection! I typically only eat about 4-5 oz, but ate the entire thing! If we decide to come back to this area, we will definitely stop here! If you want a good steak, go here!!!

The service was kind of bad where our waitress was not very helpful and all of the steaks in the table were temps below warm. The steak I had was a bit undercooked and was the coldest of them all. The butter on top did not even come close to melting. We sent our steak back to the kitchen to get reheated, which is something I never do. The reheated steak was just a bit better, and they forget to add the butter in it. At this point we should have just had a brand new steak. The added quail on the plate was a bit overcooked. I highly recommend going elsewhere on this street that did not disappoint this badly.

Positives first: There is handicapped parking available, the staff across the village was consistently kind and willing to help, and there are so many fun activities for kids sledding, snowboarding, ice skating, and the Gondolita was such a cute, fun little ride the kids absolutely loved. The food was great, the drinks were amazing, and overall it can be a wonderful family experience. I also want to give a huge shoutout to Felipe at Taos Guest Services/Ticketing. He was incredibly kind, patient, helpful, and truly went above and beyond for us. When you're already navigating a challenging situation, people like him make all the difference and we truly appreciated him. However, accessibility is a serious issue here and needs attention. The area is not ADA-friendly at all. Most shops have steps with no ramps, doorways are too narrow for wheelchairs, and many restaurants are extremely cramped with very little space to move through. The only elevator we could find was inside The Blake Hotel, and although staff eventually understood, it was uncomfortable having to justify using the elevator simply to access the lower level like everyone else. The "handicapped parking" area is also on a slope, which makes it difficult and unsafe for wheelchairs or mobility-restricted guests. The shuttles have such small clearance that even my stroller couldn't fully board, so we had to physically hold it while it hung on a step. A designated lounge or viewing area for guests who cannot ski would have made a huge difference especially ADA-accessible viewing spots for skiing and sledding so disabled guests can still comfortably enjoy watching family and friends. Constructively, I strongly recommend clearly marking ADA-only viewing areas so they remain available for people with both visible and invisible disabilities. We still made beautiful memories, but navigating the area was unnecessarily difficult for what is promoted as a family-friendly destination. I would absolutely return, because we did enjoy it but the ADA accessibility truly needs to be re-evaluated and improved. One helpful tip for future visitors: If you need ski or snowboard rentals, check out Taos Pueblo Sur, as their pricing is much more affordable. Things can get pricey VERY quickly in the main area.

Some of the hotels/lodging on the mountain are lovely but we didn't stay there due to higher cost. We stayed in El Prado, about a 30 minute drive, however, it's a beautiful drive. Of course, we wish there had been more snow but that's the case everywhere out west in December-January 2025-2026 or so it seems. Either way, the consensus from our party was that we would return here to ski again.
