Peggy was our guide and she was very knowledgeable. For us the only limiting factor is that they are only open Thursday through Saturday. But I understand the reasoning. I just had to get creative with my schedule. I'm very glad I did.

The employee was sure to tell me about how he worked on them and about the trains there. They also had some fancy china that was on board some of the trains. They had mockups of travel trunks, mini trains, and more. There is a platform you can look outside at the train tracks. The employee said that on the weekend, the trains outside on the main track might be running, but are hit or miss when coming by. They do have a couple of cars you can walk inside that have a recording telling you about them. You can even go down the way, and if you buy some tickets, you can ride the mini train. I had fun doing it, and kids will love it. It was fun. Parking was easy, too.

There is wartime memorabilia section at the entrance from most wars including WW1, WW2, etc. There are displays of guns and rifles from earlier eras, as well as medals and uniforms. However, the atmosphere is thick with the smell of dust and enclosure (not good if you're asthmatic or have breathing concerns). You are required to leave a minimum $5 donation per person.

In 1914 the Harvey House in Brownwood was added to the Santa Fe Depot and restored in the 1990's. The uniformed "Harvey Girls" would serve up to 700 people at once in the large dining rooms. They lived in the top floor of the building with a typical bedroom restored and on display. Tracks behind the structures are used today with freight and passengers passing through on a regular basis. It is free and I recommend a visit, very interesting.

I was in town and killing time before meeting up with some people in the evening, and came across this as an option. I swung by and was thoroughly impressed. The young man behind the counter was friendly and walked me through where I'd be going and what I'd be seeing. I was the only one in the "next group" for the intro video, and he even delayed the start time since I ran to the restroom before roaming the grounds. They have an impressive display of artifacts ranging from early Texas all the way through the frontier days, including a very impressive array of historic guns towards the end. They have interactive kiosks and hologram displays where actors portray historical figures and tell "firsthand" accounts of what was experienced on the frontier, right out of the accounts left by those people beforehand. There's a second theater towards the end of the museum that's a lot more immersive. You have to rotate around in a swivel chair as the story is told from all around you, and there's lights and sound to really sell you on the experience-- all from the comfort of your air-conditioned chair. I don't plan on being back in Abilene anytime soon, but if I ever was back with friends, I'd take them here to check this place out.

It was a HUGE success! So many beautiful cars showed up, they had to expand to the lot across the street. Yes, I saw plenty of cars I would love to have, and plenty I couldn't afford!
