She is so happy to go every morning and runs and hugs her teachers. The only time I've seen any crying is when her teacher has left before I pick her up. She was sick and out for several days (daycare ick after never being around kids plus being a quarantine baby) and she was extremely excited to go back. She brought me her shoes several times while she was out, indicating she was ready to go, the first day she went back her excitement started as soon as we got in the car to leave and once we pulled up she was overjoyed. They're great about updates, keeping you in the know and have been so patient with me even what I'm sure it wasn't always easy. It's given me a huge piece of mind knowing that she's happy and being taken care of, even if I sometimes I do get just a liiiiitle jealous.

Our Neighborhood has been a wonderful center for our younger son. He's been there since he was…read morefour months old, and he has really thrived. The classrooms are spacious and comfortable and well-tended and filled with items appropriate to the age groups, mostly eco-friendly and natural objects. The teachers are incredibly creative in coming up with new objects and collections and themes for the children to learn and experience at every age, and the low caregiver-child ratios ensure plenty of focused attention through the day. The teachers carry through on a philosophy of respect and trust in the children, helping them learn to manage their emotions, to understand their world, and to work together with peers and teachers confidently and with empathy. Our son has had the same main teacher for two years, moving from classroom to classroom together with his cohort of similarly-aged friends, and she has been a true partner for us in his growth and development, with lots of feedback and observations for us to treasure. And the center hosts a private parents-only Shutterfly site where they post TONS of photos of the children every week. Priceless. He is loved, safe, happy, confident and learning so much, and he loves going to see his friends every day at school. He amazes me every day with what he has learned and who he is becoming as an Our Neighborhood kid. Far beyond a typical daycare, and totally worth it.

Our family had a very poor experience with Aloha Mind Math in Charlottesville, VA, managed by Biju…read moreand Ashwati. When we first enrolled our daughter about seven months ago, they were friendly and attentive. Unfortunately, that changed quickly. After the initial weeks, our daughter was assigned to different instructors, and the quality of teaching and communication declined significantly. We had particularly unpleasant interactions with Ms. Sejal. She often gave feedback to students in front of other parents, which felt unprofessional and embarrassing for the kids. When I politely raised concerns about this, her behavior toward my daughter noticeably changed. She began openly comparing her to other students and making discouraging remarks like "learn from them," which I found completely inappropriate. When we approached the owners to request a teacher change, they asked for detailed explanations--which we provided--but ultimately did nothing to resolve the issue. The pricing is also extremely high: around $300 per month for two subjects, plus a registration fee of about $130. They also charge a "security deposit" equal to a full month's tuition, which is very unusual for a tutoring service. On top of that, they require auto-draft payments--meaning you must be very proactive in stopping payments if you choose to end services. For the quality of instruction and the lack of support, the cost simply doesn't match the value. Scheduling is another major issue. They follow the public school calendar, so if your child attends on Mondays or Fridays, expect frequent cancellations due to holidays. When you ask for make-up sessions, they cite the number of classes "included" in the monthly fee--information that was never disclosed clearly when we enrolled. Despite charging monthly, they cap the number of sessions per month, and you only realize that once you try to reschedule. They also frequently rescheduled our daughter's sessions at their convenience, but when we needed to adjust the schedule, getting a makeup session was difficult. Communication from the owners was consistently poor. There were multiple instances where messages went unanswered for days. In one situation, I was actually waiting for Ms. Ashwati to discuss an issue, but she simply walked away after speaking with two other parents. It felt extremely disrespectful and dismissive. Ironically, the only time they responded quickly was when I emailed to cancel and stop the automatic drafts from my account. Overall, our experience was stressful, disappointing, and not at all what we expected. I would not recommend this center, especially given the high fees and lack of professionalism.

Charlottesville- Aloha Mind Math…read more My son has been taking aloha mind math for a year now. Eventhough he was an A student we enrolled him in this class so he could challenge and develop his mind further. He has been using his aloha math to solve difficult math problems in school faster then his classmates.He comes home with a smile on his face if he beat his opponent in a math challege. His teacher Ashwati N is very accomodating, patient, caring. She takes pride in her students progress and spends more time with them after class if they need more help. I would recommend Charlottesville-aloha mind math whether you are an excellent student or average student if you live in a 20 mile radius of Charlottesville area.

Academics were rough. Students collectively pushed back on doing work, and few teachers were…read morewilling or able to fail 70% of the class, so standards slipped across the board -- a student can graduate with a great-looking transcript and still be underprepared for math, science, etc. down the line. I remember an instance where a teacher assigned homework, and past the due date, 3/26 students had got it in. She can't tank everyone's grade, so her only choice is to either weigh homework lower or extend/devalue the deadline, neither of which actually serve the students as they move into higher education and careers. I watched one classmate who'd been absent three months and failing everything still walk at graduation, which stung given how hard most of us worked. These things really do devalue an FMS diploma. Security is another concern: a cadet installed a hacking device on a teacher's computer mid-year and changed his friends' grades. He was expelled, but as far as I know the systems were never hardened afterward. Socially, there's real camaraderie, but it can get cliquey, and cadet rank creates uneven enforcement -- some students effectively don't have to follow the rules. I was bullied a fair amount, mostly for taking my cadet leadership duties seriously. Post-graduation, the school isn't on Parchment or similar systems, so transcripts are a hassle. Mine arrived SIGNED and incorrectly listed all my courses as standard-level instead of Honors/AP, tanking my GPA on paper -- which is how Valedictorian ended up going to the highest ranking cadet instead of me, despite my actual record being better. That one felt like a real injustice. None of this is to discount the good people there. Christianna Herrera (Middle School Administrator) is a godsend -- goes above and beyond daily. Robert Loveland is excellent too. SGT Glass cares deeply and shows up despite chronic pain. Phillip Lacey made a real personal impact on me. JROTC staff, disagreements aside, genuinely want the best for cadets. Food service is better than most colleges', and admissions (Mike Payne) is solid. Bottom line: as an alternative to public high school, it's compelling -- but if you're comparing schools nationally, I'd hold off until there's real infrastructure investment, including expanding the TAC office budget to hire more staff experienced in childcare and boarding school environments. Ultimately, I had a good experience, but as a product review, it needs work.

I was hazed (beat up by a group) of 10 kids from my floor (each floor is owned by a group in the barracks) while the lights were off in the chapel because I often was provokative and didn't do as I was told by the leaders of my group. The school as a result of the investigation punished nobody, but did offer me to a new floor (the floor were most of band/music kids were) and room as a result of the incident. I was also almost hazed (beat up by a group) the first month of arriving at the school, but thankfully some bystanders saw what was going on and stopped it from happening. This however was a constant problem at the school and a lot of kids were being hazed. The rampant drug use is apparent here. Kids in the bathrooms openly smoke cigarettes (Marlboro reds). They often offer these cigarettes to new kids to try, and sometimes even peer pressure. I also was taken advantage of numerous times, and bullied by many of older kids (higher classman) as a result and still am suffering from emotional damage this school has caused. One time I was grabbed and almost thrown into toilet by another kid because I wasn't listening to his orders. Even after getting beat up, the emotional bullying didn't stop. Colonel Gunn is the most solid leader, and is very good influence on the kids. I feel Fishburne Military School is a good choice for your kids if they conform easily. If they have a unique personality, and do not like to conform and have a strong sense of their own identity and opinions, I would highly avoid Fishburne Military School.

This is a super cute shop in downtown Staunton. Great location just above The Well Balanced Paw and…read moreacross from the city parking lot. It's nearby to several restaurants and has lightly scented bubbles always blowing out the window up the steps leading to The Depot Grill. It's beautifully decorated inside and stocked with all kinds of cute gift items. There are candles, bath bombs, hand poured soaps, body butters, lotions, home decor, etc. The owner inside was very friendly and offered to answer any questions while we browsed. Unfortunately, I had just bought a bunch of soaps from a local shop or I'd have happily bought some of these soaps and bath bombs. There are tons of great soap scents in floral and citrus flavors.
