It was warm, comforting, welcoming and had some seriously retro decor. As others have mentioned, there's a tasty selection of beers from Fyne Ales but on this visit I opted for cider. We took a seat in the lounge area as the bar was pretty heaving for 1pm on a Saturday (those damn subcrawlers!) and enjoyed the atmosphere and hospitality of by far the friendliest bar staff I've encountered in a long time. Over they came to take our photo, find out our story and give us tips and advice on completing the subcrawl. They even have maps for you! That is SO cool and was very handy later on when I'm sure some people didn't know where they were (um, like me). There's a JUKEBOX as well - a proper old school one where some of the cards are handwritten. It tells you that you have to pay, but just push the buttons and you'll discover that you don't. They supplied Subcrawl maps and made a point of coming out to chat with us. The even took our photo as they take records of all the "subcrawlers" who pass through their bar. I must admit, I stuck to a boring bottle of becks on the drinks front as I was being very careful what alcohol I took on at this early stage. There's a few reasons for that, and while I'm sure there's just something to the atmosphere that's impossible to quantify, these are the things that I think give it at least part of its charm. 1. The whisky. They have a huge selection and they're easily the best place to come for whisky in Finnieston, although most of the bars around here have a few bottles on offer. They staff are very knowledgeable about it, without being snobbish or pushy, and at quieter times are happy to make recommendations and to chat to you about their favourites. 2. It's small. Not in a cramped way but in a cosy way. You can sometimes struggle for a table but it's the kind of place where you feel OK about sharing tables with strangers. The regulars are friendly and are happy for you to pull up a chair 3. When there's music it's fiddles, usually being played by those friendly regulars. I saw an accordion there once but usually it's fiddles being played and being played well - they tend to get involved with the Celtic Connections music festival. 4. It's dog friendly. There's usually one or two dogs running around and the staff are happy to provide a bowl of water for them. So there you have it. Finnieston might be getting awfully fashionable but if that's not your scene it still has one of the least hipster-ish, most traditional whisky pubs in Glasgow and it's a pub that's well worth checking out.

Many of those folk will do a gig in here, The Winds. It's a small, unremarkable, bland exterior. It's pretty much that way inside, too - but that's not the point. It's the people that make this place such a star. The staff are proper "old school" bar staff, as quick with a scathing put down to a regular as they are with a shot glass. The taps are standard pub fare, not varying much from other places, but I will say that they have a damn fine pint of Guinness, expertly poured, in here. Worth a visit for that alone! The regulars themselves - and you'll know them, they just have that air about them, that this is THEIR pub, THEIR place - happily chat away to all and sundry, dispensing knowledge, wisdom, wit and even the odd conspiracy theory in some cases. If you were to define a typical "Glesga" pub, this would be up there on your list. The music is live, rough, ready and in your face. Slotted into a corner at the far end, the sound reverberates round the whole pub, and outside. Get a good band, some good songs, and the atmosphere is as good as any stadium corporate production. Live music in a small pub is a thing of beauty, and should never be allowed to die. Places like The Winds, The Scotia, and all of their many bretheren fly the flag for the local scene. Pick a Friday, Saturday or a Sunday - pop in, enjoy the band and the Guinness while you can. Support live music in your city!

This is a wonderful addition to the Calton area and I hope it does well. The church interior has been lovingly preserved, even down to the pulpit sitting at one side of the stage, and the organ pipes provide a fine backdrop and a reminder of the venue's former incarnation. I wonder if the organ still works? I also noticed a cinema screen overhead so I guess they may show films? Or maybe it's just for presentations? The funky purple lighting didn't seem sleazy at all, although it could easily have done. Even the installation of the necessary sound and lighting technology didn't manage to detract from the beautiful architecture. Through a curtain to the right is the bar/restaurant area, which we didn't try on this visit. It has an American diner-style menu, with ribs, steaks, burgers, open sandwiches and pizzas being the mainstays - although I was pleased to see that they do have a couple of veggie options and even a vegan nut loaf. Parking is pretty straightforward on the street outside, or there is a tiny car parking area behind the church that holds about 6 cars.

Bordering on hostile. And the music was just insanely loud for a bar that wasn't even half full. I probably wouldn't go back at the weekend - but I'll definitely so in for a midweek drink sometime.
